Abstract

This study entitled “Gender Construction on Homosexual Men in Television Series ‘Queer as Folk’” investigates how gender on homosexual men is portrayed and constructed in various scenes and dialogues depicted in the television series. By taking the discourse of [homo]sexual practice and fashion, homosexual men are shown to have different gender roles on each occasion. It is performed by them to survive, both in their homosexual community and in [hetero]normative neighborhood. This article argues that homosexual men at the same time are shown to perform by following two different standards. The data used in this study are textual and visual data (screenshots) captured from the series. After analyzing the data, this study finds non-normative gender views performed by homosexual men which tied and related to [hetero]normative gender roles.Key words: Homosexual, gender, heteronormativity, and Queer As Folk

Abstract

The development of information technology in the 4.0 revolution has led to an increasingly rapid and unstoppable flow of information. In addition, the development of Post-Modernism plays an important role in creating a new society called post-truth or post-truth which begins to challenge the existing truth. This study aims to investigate the challenges faced by Indonesian society regarding history in the Post-truth era along with the solutions offered. This research is a descriptive qualitative research technique using library research. The results of the study show that post-truth arises as a result of the development of post-modernism and changes in information systems. Even though the post-truth era is relatively new in Indonesia, it has had a major impact on historical science. Therefore the solution offered is the active role of historians and history educators in disseminating history, increasing literacy for the public, and increasing historical awareness to avoid false information, especially related to a historical event.  Keywords: Society, Indonesia, History, Post-truth

Abstract

Firearms and gunpowder are commodities commonly sold during the early European arrival to Indonesia, including Nusantara. Similar to the spice trade, there was intense competition among the Europeans in arms trading. With that, the orientation of this research is to show the rivalry between 2 main trading factions on trading in Nusantara during the 16th and 17th centuries: Portugal and The Netherlands. As a historical study, this research applies the historical method as its research method. Reconstruction results show that European traders’ decision to make firearms an import commodity cannot be separated from the popularity of the war instrument in the warfare of their home continent. Initially, Portugal managed to consolidate its power as a dominant firearms trader in Nusantara after they conquered Malacca in 1511. Their domination slowly faded after the arrival of VOC ships during the late 16th century culminating in the takeover of Malacca in 1641. Therefore, it can be said that the firearms trading competition in Nusantara during this period reflects the trend of warfare at the time alongside the relations of various European nations outside their homelands.

Abstract

This article aims to analyze the complex relations between three entities: Sunda, Priangan, and West Java. Many parties often equate the three, whereas each has different contexts, boundaries, and meanings. This research uses a qualitative method with a historical-sociological approach through a literature study. The analysis results show that: (1) Sunda refers to a broader ethnocultural identity, beyond the current borders of West Java Province, characterized by language, belief systems, and customs; (2) Priangan is a colonial Dutch construction formed from Mataram and VOC influences, which shaped an aristocratic identity, “menak” culture, and became the heart of modern Sundanese culture; (3) West Java is a product of the post-independence Indonesian nation-state that froze and administered the diversity within it into one governmental region. The three intersect and form an ongoing dialectic, where West Java is the political container, Priangan is the dominant cultural core, and Sunda is a more inclusive identity umbrella that is sometimes marginalized by the dominance of the Prianganization narrative. Understanding this relationship is crucial for inclusive development policies and the preservation of cultural diversity at the local level.
