Abstract

This research discusses Ali Shari’ati’s humanism thinking in the context of student’s alignment with the lower classes, by interpreting QS. Ibrahim verse 4. Shari’ati criticised the concept of Western humanism (liberalism, marxism and existentialism) which he considered too materialistic and did not take into account the spiritual dimension of man. Instead, he offers a tawhid-based humanism that emphasises man’s role as God’s representative on earth, with the main task of freeing the oppressed from social and structural shackles. This research uses a qualitative method with a literature study approach, analysing Ali Shari’ati’s works and other supporting literature. The results show that Ali Shari’ati’s concept of humanism encourages students to act as rausyan fikr (enlightened intellectuals) who are active in social change. Student’s alignment with the lower society must be manifested in the form of advocacy, empowerment, and real action based on religious and ethical values. By understanding Ali Shari’ati’s humanism, students can develop critical awareness and act as agents of change who contribute to social justice. This article asserts that siding with the oppressed is not just a moral choice, but also part of intellectual and spiritual responsibility.

Abstract

This article examines the influence of Western secular thought on Islamic civilization, focusing on its repercussions within the political domain. The dominance of secular politics, which often conflicts with Islamic values, poses a significant challenge to Islamic governance principles. In response to this ideological shift, Yusuf Qaradhawi has called for a political reformation grounded in Islamic teachings, framing this transformative effort as a form of jihad. To investigate this perspective, the study employs qualitative research methods, specifically library-based research, and document analysis. Primary data is sourced from Yusuf Qaradhawi's own writings, while secondary data includes a range of books, scholarly journals, bulletins, and encyclopedias pertinent to the topic. The analysis reveals that the core principles of democracy—such as the right of citizens to elect their leaders freely—are compatible with Islamic values. However, the study also identifies notable deviations from these democratic ideals in practice. In the context of Indonesia, where Islamic values have been incorporated into the democratic framework, discrepancies between theoretical principles and actual political practices remain significant. This paper not only highlights the alignment between Islamic principles and democratic values but also critically assesses the challenges and inconsistencies faced in their implementation.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze Muhammad Abduh's thoughts on Islamic educational reform and describe their relevance to the dynamics of contemporary Islamic education in Indonesia. Using a literature review method with descriptive-critical analysis of Abduh's primary works and secondary literature, this study identified four main ideas of reform: Abduh's rejection of blind imitation and his encouragement to develop a culture of critical thinking; criticism of tendentious books that paved the way for strengthening critical literacy and developing more objective teaching materials; reform of educational institutions that emphasized the integration of religious and modern sciences; and revitalization of the Islamic intellectual heritage (turats) through a contextual and interdisciplinary approach to reading. These findings show that Abduh's thinking can provide philosophical and practical direction for the development of madrasah and pesantren curricula, the improvement of teacher competence, and the modernization of learning methods that are more dialogical, rational, and adaptive to the challenges of the 21st century. Thus, this study contributes to explaining how Abduh's reformist ideas can be implemented to strengthen the quality and relevance of Islamic education in Indonesia.

Abstract

The regulation of veil restriction at UIN Sunan Kalijaga, and its ensuing controversy, is a significant and meaningful event. The symbolic significance of the veil reflects identity problems, power dynamics, and disparities in religious, social, and political perspectives. This article analyses the ongoing power relations and practices underlying narrative discourse by collecting data in the mass media from February to April 2018. Using discourse analysis and Michel Foucault's Genealogy theory, the data was analyzed. The result shows; first, the case of the veil restriction at UIN Jogja is massive and phenomenal that it reflects the context of PTKI and even contemporary Indonesian Islam. Second, the cadres’ debate is replete with discourse contestation between opposing ideological factions, demonstrating the tight connection between knowledge and power. Third, it demonstrates the increasingly diversified form of contemporary Islam in Indonesia. Finally, this article helps to understand the dynamics of current Islamic thought, notably in PTKI, and the challenges of democracy in Indonesia.

Abstract

The contestation of conversation about the Baha'i religious group in Indonesia continues from time to time. In valuable retrospect, there has been much debate that characterizes the existence of the Baha'i group. As a result, it is very unfortunate that there are many frictions caused by socio-religious friction in the social sphere. This has led to many assumptions about religious freedom in Indonesia, which are increasingly showing a repressive trend. The author is interested in analyzing the various frictions that arise between the gaps in religious plurality in Indonesia, both pragmatic and paradigmatic. In addition, the author wants to examine how the role of the government can break the deadlock of friction. The research was conducted with a qualitative analysis oriented toward a literature review and Maqasid Syariah as a theoretical perception. Exploration research focuses on various phenomena that occur around the presence of Baha'is in Indonesia and how potential conflicts can arise in them. This research proves that the state needs to be present to accommodate various religions and coexist by prioritizing the concept of benefit for all citizens. In addition, the role of society in maintaining multicultural values must be initiated more intensely and in a dialogical manner.
