Abstract

This study aims to describe the process of solving mathematical problems in the subjects of a two-variable linear equation system in terms of field-dependent cognitive style. The type of research used is descriptive qualitative research. The research subjects were 15 grade VIII students in one of the public junior high schools in Cimahi City. In this study, the instrument used was a problem-solving test consisting of 2 questions on the material of a two-variable linear equation system and interviews for 3 students with field dependent cognitive style. The results showed that the steps of solving mathematical problems of students with cognitive style field dependent were categorized as good at the stage of understanding the problem and re-examining, categorized enough at the stage of planning completion, and categorized less at the stage of implementing the completion plan. This means, if field dependent students can understand the problem or problem, it will affect the next step.

Abstract

Long-term home learning can lead to a decline in students' academic knowledge and skills, resulting in a delay in the learning process known as learning loss. The aim of this study is to investigate the factors influencing the learning outcomes of junior high school students after the Covid-19 pandemic. The research design used is descriptive qualitative. The subjects of this study consist of 120 students. The study employs purposive sampling technique, resulting in 34 research subjects. Data collection methods include interviews, observations, and questionnaires. Three data analysis techniques are utilized: data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The study focuses on four issues: preparation for learning, the learning process, learning tools or media, and students' final outcomes. The research findings indicate that the condition of learning loss in eighth-grade students at junior high school is still relatively high. Therefore, it is expected that this research can identify the factors causing the decline in learning among junior high school students with the goal of improving the quality of education

Abstract

Conceptual understanding is a critical component of effective mathematics learning. However, many students encounter challenges in understanding mathematical concepts, including the concept of the mean. This study aims to design a learning trajectory that enhances students’ conceptual understanding of the mean. Employing a design research methodology, the study followed the stages of validation studies in creating and refining a hypothetical learning trajectory (HLT). The research consisted of three stages: preliminary design, design experiment (encompassing pilot experiment and teaching experiment), and retrospective analysis. The participants were fourty eighth-grade students from a public school in Cimahi. Data were collected through interviews, observations, documentation, and field notes, which informed iterative improvement to the HLT. Data analysis involved comparing students’ actual learning experiences with the HLT as a reference framework. The findings reveal that integrating technology and problem-based learning enhances students’ conceptual understanding of the mean, fostering creativity and real-world problem-solving skills. Based on these results, this study proposes a validated learning trajectory to support students in developing a deeper conceptual understanding of the mean.

Abstract

This research is a quasi-experimental study aiming at analyzing the role of the metacognitive guidance approach in order to improve high-school students' critical thinking skills by applying  Non-Equivalent Control Group Design. This study involved high school students in one of the high schools in the city of Cimahi. In this study, the pretest for mathematical critical thinking skills is administered to two classes of students of control and experiment groups. The experimental group uses the metacognitive guidance approach assisted by GeoGebra software, whereas the control group uses the conventional method. Both classes receive the same hours of study, mathematics teacher as well as mathematics contents. The researcher conducted observations only in the experimental class. At the end of the treatment, a post-test for the two groups was carried out regarding students’ mathematical critical thinking skills included processing the results of the test, namely the data. After this research has been carried out, the next step is to analyze the data and draw conclusions of the research. In analyzing the data, it is categorized into three levels, namely high, medium and low abilities.  The data is analyzed by means of t-test to test the difference of two means of students’ critical thinking ability. Data analysis was performed using the SPSS software. The analysis shows that there is a significant difference in mathematics critical thinking ability between the two groups of students.

Abstract

Problem solving refers to the process of finding ways to overcome challenges in order to achieve specific goals. In mathematics learning, problem-solving skills must be instilled from an early stage so that students are trained to solve both mathematical problems and real-life challenges. According to Polya, the steps in problem solving include understanding the problem, devising a solution strategy, implementing the strategy, and evaluating the results. Learning motivation is an internal and external drive that encourages students to enjoy and engage enthusiastically in the learning process. This motivation helps students attain optimal academic performance, as strong motivation during learning is likely to produce better outcomes. In other words, individuals with strong motivation tend to achieve better academic results. The purpose of this study is to analyze the correlation between students' learning motivation and their mathematical problem-solving skills at the junior high school level. The participants in this study were 24 students from class VIII.I at SMP Krida Utama Padalarang. The research method used was correlational analysis. Data were collected using a learning motivation questionnaire consisting of 10 positive and 10 negative statements, along with a mathematical problem-solving test on flat-sided solid shapes comprising four essay questions. The results of the study indicate a significant and strong correlation between learning motivation and mathematical problem-solving skills among junior high school students. Regression analysis shows a positive relationship in which higher learning motivation leads to greater problem-solving skills. These research findings provide insights for teachers and researchers to recognize the importance of learning motivation as a key factor in enhancing students' problem-solving skills.

Abstract

Mathematics learning problems, especially on the Pythagorean theorem material, cannot be studied only from one side, but need to be seen comprehensively from various integrative learning studies. This study aims to provide an overview of the evaluation of learning Pythagorean theorem material from reputable studies. This research uses the Systematic Literature Review (SRL) method. A review was conducted of 13 relevant articles published in various reputable international journals in the period 2019 to 2024. The data analysis used was carried out with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Based on the results of the review, it was found that in the Pythagorean theorem material there are still many misconceptions of understanding, with implications for the ability of abstraction that is not optimal. The quality of teaching is influenced by teachers' motivational beliefs in teaching, technology integration can help increase learning motivation, streamline learning and students are happier with teachers who use learning media, and teacher motivation in applying technology has an important role. In the realm of learning innovation, problem-based learning with a realistic mathematics approach is proven to be valid and effective and encourages active students and positive responses to the Pythagorean theorem material. Evaluation instruments must be valid, reliable, well designed to be effective in optimizing the learning process and diagnosing learning difficulties.        Keywords: pythagorean theorem, learning evaluation, mathematics learning.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpmipa/v25i2.pp847-863

Abstract

The proficiency of students in mastering mathematical problem-solving skills stands as a pivotal criterion for the success of mathematics learning. This research aims to assess and portray the level of students' mastery of mathematical problem-solving skills, particularly within the context of the ratio topic. Employing a descriptive qualitative research design, the study involves 10 seventh-grade students from a junior high school in Cimahi, West Java, Indonesia. These students have diverse initial abilities, spanning low, medium, and high levels, as recommended by their mathematics teacher. Data collection is executed through tests encompassing five indicators of mathematical problem-solving skills outlined by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM). The students' answer sheets are meticulously examined to ascertain and evaluate the students' proficiency in mathematical problem-solving skills, specifically pertaining to the ratio topic. The research findings indicate that the seventh-grade students' mathematical problem-solving skills in the ratio topic are deemed quite proficient.
