Abstract

There are low bone density and defects in bone micro-architecture which led to a significant increases of bone fragility and bone fracture in osteophorosis, due to an oestrogen deficiency in post-menopause woman. Natural polymer which has potential action on bone remodelling is chitosan. Chitosan can reduce the production of IL-1, IL-6, TNF-α and PGE2 osteoclast cell as well as increase osteoblast cell differentiation in bone formation process. The study aimed to determine the effect of chitosan white shrimp shell on the trabecular thickness of femur female wistar rats post-ovariectomy. This research was the quasy experimental laboratory research using female wistar rats that were divided into three groups; a non-ovariectomy as control, a negative ovariectomy, and an ovariectomy treatment group that was given chitosan 0,05 g/day. After 14 days, the experimental mice were euthanized and trabecular thickness was measured. There were 59,53µm, 32,44µm and 78,43µm trabecular thickness in the control group, the negative control group and the treatment group, respectively. The data were analysed using one way ANOVA and they showed a significant differences between all groups (p=0,000). It can be concluded that the chitosan of white shrimp shell can significantly increase trabecular thickness femur female wistar rats post-ovariectomy. Abstract

Diagnosis of benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) can be established through transabdominal ultrasonography (TAUS), a noninvasive supportive examination which measure prostate volume (PV), and intravesical prostatic protrusion (IPP). The severity of obstructive symptoms experienced by the patient was assessed by international prostate symptom score (IPSS) questionnaire. This study aimed to analyse the relationship between both PV and IPP and IPSS in BPH patients. This was an observational analytic study with cross sectional design conducted at Department of Urology Surgery Bina Sehat Hospital Jember, Paru Hospital Jember and Bhayangkara Hospital Bondowoso during October-November 2016 in 30 respondents. The average of PV was 52.01±25.18 mL, IPP was 12.67±6.69 mm and IPSS score was 25.60±9.20. The results of Spearman correlation between the PV and Voiding-IPSS, Storage-IPSS, or total score IPSS and IPP and Voiding IPSS showed no significant correlation (p =0.319; p=0.067; p=0.085; p=0.183). Spearman correlation between the IPP and Storage-IPSS or total score IPSS resulted p value equal to 0.012 and r=0.451 and p=0.027 and r=0.404, which showed a significant correlation with moderate correlation strength. Statistically, IPP correlated to IPSS score better than PV. Keywords: BPH, international prostate symptom score, transabdominal ultrasonography

Abstract

Shigella dysenteriae is bacteria that caused diarrhea with high morbidity and mortality. Resistance and toxicity has reported in some antibiotics therapy towards S. dysentriae. Therefore, alternative therapy based on herbal plants is needed. Chymbopogon citratus oil can be used as an antibacterial to Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Streptococcus mutans, all strains Staphlylococcus sp, Bacillus cereus and Bacillus subtilis. This study aimed to investigate antibacterial activity of C. citratus oils on the growth of S. dysentriae and its minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). This type of research was a quasi experimental. Antibacterial activity test performed by diffusion method. Subjects in this study were S. dysentriae. C. citratus oil concentration used were 15 μl/ml, 20 μl/ml, 25 μl/ml, 30 μl/ml, 35 μl/ml and 40 μl/ml. Positive control group was given ciprofloxacin 5 μl/ml and a negative control group was given tween-80. Inhibition zone was observed at a concentration of 25 µl/ml (P3). The MIC of C. citratus oils againts S. dysentriae was at a concentration of 25 µl/ml. Kruskal Wallis analysis showed that p=0.000 and α=0.05, it was revealed that there were differences between antibacterial activity amoung tested group with different concentration. Abstract

Medical students are constantly getting stress that could lead to oxidative stress where the level of free radicals is higher than the level of antioxidants in the body. Free radicals can bind to erythrocyte membranes and alter membrane structure that lead to the integrity of the erythrocyte membrane resulting in decreased erythrocyte ability in preventing hemolysis. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that could prevent free radicals bond to erythrocyte membrane. Vitamin C works by donating electrons to free radicals and prevent binding to erythrocyte membranes. The purposed of this study was to determine the effect of vitamin C consumption on osmotic fragility of erythrocytes in medical students with psychological stress. This research was clinical trial research with quasi experimental with pretest-posttest control group design. Researchers used Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS) questionnaire to measure the stress level. Data analysis using T test obtained mean of percentage of hemolysis between pretest and posttest was p= 0,02. It can be concluded that there is significant difference on osmotic fragility due to Vitamin C consumption in medical Student of Jember University with psychological stress.

Abstract

Paederus dermatitis is an acute skin irritation caused by skin contact with toxins in the rove beetle (Paederus sp). Pederin poison was previously thought derived from the rove beetle's body. Based on other studies, poison pederin obtain from the symbiotic rove beetles and Pseudomonas aeruginosa which is able to secrete the matrix metalloprotease (MMP). Doxycycline is an antibiotic act as an inhibitor of MMP. This study aimed to verify the effect of Doxycycline gel to the number of macrophages in healing process Paederus dermatitis due to poison of rove beetle (Paederus sp.). The study design was a quasy experimental design using 40 mice (Mus musculus), were divided into 4 groups. Normal control group, negative control group, P1 group was given doxycycline 1%, and P2 group was given doxycycline 5%. Experimental animals were terminated on day 1, 3, 5, 7, and 15. The result of One Way Annova test on the number of macrophages on day 1, 3 and 5 showed a significance of 0.00 (p<0.05). This study showed that there was a significant difference in the effect of doxycycline gel to the number of macrophages in healing process of Paederus dermatitis.
