Abstract

Abstract

Gabe Halak Batak is a term that was born from research on the bodiedness traditions of the Batak Toba people which means "Being a Batak Person". This research was conducted to take advantage of the bodiedness traditions of the Batak Toba Ethnic Community, one of which is Tortor. The author's interest in the tortor is because there are basic techniques in the tortor which are named metaphorically and through this naming can be an 'entrance' for actors in the process of exploring their physiology. In this study, the authors implemented it for actors from the Aka Bodi Theatre group in Medan who came from three different ethnicities. This study uses ethnographic and autoethnographic approaches in collecting data and interrogating the process of physiological exploration applied to acting training at the Aka Bodi Theatre. The results obtained are that each actor who participates in the training process experiences a variety of sensitivities related to the Batak Toba ethnic culture and has visual references regarding the creation of actions in the training.

Abstract

This study explores the implementation of Telegram chatbots as learning media at SMPN 4 Binjai, focusing on enhancing teaching and learning processes through digital transformation. Telegram can serve as effective learning tools by facilitating interaction among teachers, students, and parents (Sanaky, 2023), the research involved training and mentoring 21 teachers using methods such as presentations, discussions, and simulations over three meetings. The chatbots aimed to address challenges such as workload management and student engagement by providing automated content distribution, quizzes, and feedback. Findings indicate that Telegram chatbots significantly enhance the efficiency of delivering educational material, boost student interest and engagement, and promote independent learning. This study underscores the importance of digital literacy in modern education and suggests that ongoing training and support are crucial for maximizing the effectiveness of Telegram chatbots. By creating more interactive and responsive learning environments, chatbots offer a promising future for educational settings. The results highlight the necessity for educational institutions to embrace technological changes and provide continuous training for educators to fully utilize digital tools' potential, thereby improving the overall quality of education.

Abstract

The lexical meaning was the smallest meaning unit in the meaning system of language that could be distinguished from other similar units. A lexeme was an abstract unit that occurred in many different forms of spoken or written sentences. Lexical associations were considered more important in the headline in the newspaper because they formed a semantic relationship and related to the most problematic coherence as open-word in the form of noun and verb since the lexical meaning of the words had the same meaning in the context. This research aimed to examine the use of lexical meaning in the headline newspaper of the Jakarta Post. The result found that there were few words whose lexical meaning correlated to certain semantic roles. As two semantic roles were used in analyzing the data, it was obtained that synonym words existed in 13 words, its percentage toward the article was 3.01%; and hyponymy words existed in 10 words, its percentage toward the article was 2.32%. This result indicated that lexical relations such as synonymy and hyponymy might vary to perform functions between sentences and clauses. Choosing the correct definition of a lexical word could avoid misinterpreting the proposition of the reader’s interpretation. It was determined that the Jakarta Post, especially in the headline entitled “Jokowi highlights tolerance at cultural congress conclusion,” contained mostly synonym words, which meant most of the lexical meaning of the words had the same meaning in the context.

Abstract

SD Syarif Ar Rasyid, a private elementary school in Medan, has 11 teachers and 86 students. With the adoption of Kurikulum Merdeka in the 2023-2024 academic year, teachers are required to implement transformative teaching, which emphasizes student-centered learning. However, the transition has been challenging due to limited collaboration among teachers and lack of access to transformative teaching resources, especially for English lessons. This community service program aims to improve teachers' transformative teaching skills in English through a Task-Based Mentoring (TBM) program. The program includes training, developing task-based learning materials, and establishing a teacher learning community. Expected outcomes include reports, journal publications, media coverage, and intellectual property rights for the program materials. The program uses a mixed-methods approach, focusing on needs analysis, training, material development, mentoring, evaluation, and community building to enhance teaching quality.

The forum, created by a group of researchers at Universitas Negeri Medan, serves as a platform for learners to seek guidance and support in their grammar learning journey. By conducting qualitative content analysis on 19 questions specifically related to grammar, common themes and patterns regarding grammar challenges were identified. The findings highlight areas of difficulty such as Subject-Verb Agreement, Direct and Indirect Speech, Punctuation (Hyphen usage), Relative Clauses, Understanding "Neither" and "Either", Verb Tenses, Passive Voice, Direct Quotations vs. Paraphrasing in Academic Writing. Addressing these challenges through targeted explanations, examples, and recommendations can assist educators and language instructors in supporting learners in overcoming grammar difficulties and improving overall language proficiency.
