Abstract

The proliferation of English across Indonesian digital and social land-scapes has generated complex sociolinguistic phenomena among young speakers, encompassing code-switching practices, accent ideol-ogy conflicts, and evolving cognitive patterns. This study investigates the intersections of identity negotiation, cognitive processing, and the in-fluence of digital media on English language use among a group of In-donesian senior high school students aged 16-18 in Medan. A mixed-methods design was employed, combining a five-item Likert-scale sur-vey administered to 15 respondents with in-depth qualitative interviews and open-ended responses. Quantitative data were analyzed descrip-tively, while qualitative findings were subjected to thematic coding and socio-psycholinguistic interpretation. Findings reveal that code-switching commands the highest agreement (Mean = 4.00), functioning as both a communicative tool and a vehicle for social identity construction. Confi-dence in formal English use stands at a moderate-high level (Mean = 3.47), while the cognitive shift toward thinking in English remains devel-opmental (Mean = 3.20). Accent ideology produces a near-equal but emotionally charged divide: 53.33% favor native-like pronunciation while 46.67% advocate for localized accent retention. Social media emerges as the primary driver of English lexical acquisition (Mean = 3.60), em-bedding slang terms such as literally, cringe, and slay into everyday dis-course. The findings contribute to socio-psycholinguistic scholarship by demonstrating that English use among these young learners is not merely a communicative act but a dynamic process of identity perfor-mance, cognitive becoming, and resistance to linguistic normativity in the digital era.

Abstract

This study examines major methodological approaches in language research and simultaneously investigates the foundational research-related awareness of junior secondary school students as an educational reference point. A systematic literature review was carried out by synthesizing academic books, peer-reviewed journals, and scholarly sources covering seven methodological traditions: descriptive qualitative, descriptive quantitative, experimental, historical, comparative, etymological, and grounded theory. To situate these academic frameworks within an educational context, a small-scale descriptive survey involving 31 students from SMP Negeri 3 Tebing Tinggi, Sumatera Utara, Indonesia, was administered on May 7, 2026. The survey instrument was explicitly calibrated to the junior secondary school curriculum level; it probed students' general familiarity with introductory research concepts rather than their command of advanced paradigms. Findings from the literature review confirm that methodological selection must be driven by the nature of the research question and the characteristics of the data. Survey findings indicate that students hold a basic awareness of research-related activities drawn from their schoolwork experience, yet report limited confidence in formal research design and analytical terminology. The study concludes that progressive, age-appropriate methodological instruction is essential for cultivating long-term research literacy.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the perceptions and attitudes of 11th-grade science students at MAN Pematang Siantar regarding the importance of pronunciation in English language learning. Using a descriptive quantitative method with a questionnaire as the main instrument, the study involved 34 participants who were analyzed based on four main indicators: perception of importance, technical challenges, self-study strategies, and the teacher's role in the classroom. The results of the study showed a very high level of awareness among students, with the majority acknowledging that correct pronunciation is the key to effective communication and a major factor in boosting confidence. Nevertheless, technical challenges still exist, particularly related to the inconsistency between written spelling and the way words are pronounced in English. The findings also revealed a high level of student independence in utilizing digital technology as well as a strong desire to receive direct feedback from the teacher.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the relationship between students' sentence pattern knowledge and reading comprehension ability at SMK Negeri 7 Medan. A quantitative approach was used, with 30 10th-grade students in the 2025/2026 academic year. Data were collected using two tests: a sentence pattern test with 14 items and a reading comprehension test with 6 multiple-choice questions. The obtained scores were compared using descriptive statistics and the Pearson Product-Moment correlation formula. The results showed that students' average score in sentence pattern mastery was 8.0 and their average score in reading comprehension was 3.6. The correlation coefficient (r) was 0.558, indicating a moderate positive relationship between the two variables. This indicates that students with a better understanding of sentence patterns performed better in reading comprehension. These findings suggest that sentence pattern mastery contributes significantly to students' reading comprehension. Therefore, English teachers are encouraged to integrate grammar lessons, especially about sentence structure, into reading classes to improve students' comprehension abilities.

Abstract

This study explores the role of the first language in English learning among students at SMAN 12 Medan. The research aims to analyze how the mother language influences students’ speaking performance in learning English as a foreign language. A descriptive qualitative method was applied in this study involving 35 eleventh-grade students of SMAN 12 Medan. The data were obtained through questionnaires and students’ responses related to speaking activities. The findings indicate that students still experience several difficulties in speaking English, including vocabulary limitations, grammar problems, pronunciation difficulties, speaking anxiety, and low selfconfidence. Vocabulary was identified as the most dominant problem faced by students during communication activities. The results also show that many learners tend to use their first language as support when they have difficulties expressing ideas in English. Example , students applied several communication strategies such as using fillers, asking for help, using gestures, and simplifying sentences in order to maintain communication. These strategies helped students continue speaking despite their language limitations. The study concludes that the first language remains an important factor in second language learning because it can support understanding while also creating challenges in English communication.

Abstract

This study examines the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) usage on the English proficiency of high school students at SMK Telkom 2 Medan. As AI-based tools such as chatbots, language learning apps, and automated writing assistants become increasingly integrated into students’ daily academic activities, they offer both potential benefits and challenges for language development. The research adopts a quantitative correlational approach, involving 40 students selected as participants. Data were gathered through questionnaires and English proficiency assessments, then analyzed using correlation and regression techniques. The results indicate a positive and statistically significant relationship between the use of AI tools and students’ English proficiency, particularly in improving vocabulary mastery, writing organization, and reading comprehension. Students also reported increased confidence when practicing English with AI assistance. However, the study also highlights potential drawbacks, such as over-reliance on AI-generated responses, which may limit critical thinking and reduce grammatical accuracy when students do not actively engage in the learning process. Overall, the findings suggest that AI can function as an effective supplementary tool in English learning when used thoughtfully and under proper guidance. This research contributes to the growing discussion on technology-enhanced language learning and offers practical insights for educators in integrating AI into classroom instruction in a balanced and pedagogically sound manner.
