Abstract

Cassia alata is widely used in traditional medicine for treating skin infections, yet its antifungal properties and chemical constituents remain underexplored. This study aimed to identify bioactive compounds in C. alata leaves and evaluate their antioxidant and antimicrobial potential. Phytochemical analysis was performed using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). Antioxidant activity was assessed using the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging assay. Antimicrobial efficacy was tested against Staphylococcus aureus, S. epidermidis, Malassezia furfur, and Trichophyton rubrum at extract concentrations of 6; 9; 12; and 15%. GC-MS analysis revealed six major peaks, with myo-inositol identified as the dominant compound. The extract exhibited weak antioxidant activity, with an IC₅₀ value of 174.9 ppm. However, significant antifungal activity was observed, particularly against M. furfur and T. rubrum, with the most effective inhibitory concentrations at 12% and 15%, respectively. Despite its modest antioxidant effect, C. alata leaf extract demonstrates promising antifungal potential, especially against common fungal pathogens associated with skin infections. These findings support the traditional use of C. alata and highlight its potential as a natural antifungal agent.

Abstract

Abstract

The overuse of synthetic AB mix fertilizers in hydroponic systems raises concerns over chemical residues and long-term health risks. Incorporating liquid organic fertilizer (LOF) is a potential strategy to improve nutrient efficiency and enhance crop productivity. This study aimed to evaluate the application of liquid organic fertilizer (LOF) as a sustainable strategy to reduce AB mix dependency while maintaining crop growth and productivity. The experiment was arranged in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with five treatments: P1 (100% AB mix/control), P2 (25% LOF + 75% AB mix), P3 (50% LOF + 50% AB mix), P4 (75% LOF + 25% AB mix), and P5 (100% LOF). Plant growth and yield parameters were analyzed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) followed by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT). The combination of LOF and AB mix significantly affected (P<0.05) plant height, root fresh weight, leaf number, and shoot fresh weight, but had no significant effect (P>0.05) on root length. All combinations of LOF and AB mix, including the 100% AB mix treatment, yielded statistically similar results across all measured parameters. However, the treatment with 75% LOF + 25% AB mix tended to produce the highest values, enhanced flavor, and did not reduce shelf life, whereas the 100% LOF treatment resulted in the lowest performance. These findings highlight the potential of LOF to substantially reduce synthetic input in hydroponic lettuce production, supporting more sustainable and health-conscious cultivation practices.

Abstract

Abstract. Silalahi M, Khairiah A, Nisyawati. 2020. Ethnomedicinal plants and practices related to pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum healthcare of Minangkabau ethnic group, West Sumatra, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 21: 4597-4605. In the Minangkabau ethnic cultures, medicinal plants have been used to treat health problems associated with pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum period (PCP). The objectives of this study were to (i) document the medicinal plants used during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum recovery by Minangkabau ethnics and the associated ethnomedicinal practices, and (ii) identify plants that have the potential to be developed as ingredients to increase the production of breast milk. Data were collected in three villages, namely Guguak Sarai, Taruang Taruang, and Sungai Durian in West Sumatra, Indonesia, by interviewing a total of 141 informants, involving 9 key informants and 132 general respondents. A total of 42 species of medicinal plants were found to be used for PCP healthcare by Minangkabau people. These medicinal plants are used to facilitate childbirth, alleviate menstruation problems, assist recovery after miscarriage, mitigate postpartum hemorrhage, aid in postpartum recovery, and for infant care. A total of 26 species were represented by 9 families i.e. Poaceae (7 species), Arecaceae, Fabaceae, Zingiberaceae (3 species respectively), Euphorbiaceae, Lamiaceae, Meliaceae, Musaceae, and Asteraceae (2 species each). Majority of the used medicinal preparations are administered by drinking (35 species), bathing (4 species), and as a paste (3 species). Use of Musa balbisiana, Carallia brachiata, Lansium domesticum, and Toona sureni for treating problems related to pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum period need to be further investigated for their phytochemistry and pharmacological properties. Plectranthus ambonicus and Sauropus androgynus are used to increase breast milk production, and further research is needed for standardizing processing and commercialization of these species.
