Abstract

This study examines the decline in student engagement and attention in Islamic Religious Education (IRE) classes, a trend associated with excessive gadget use and the continued dominance of rote-based instruction. Using a sequential mixed-methods design, this research develops and examines a Problem-Centered Design with Emotional Intelligence (PCD+EI) framework. The initial conceptual phase constructs the PCD+EI model through an integrative review of relevant literature. The quantitative phase tests the model using a quantitative one-group pretest–posttest design, the study implements a Problem-Centered Design with Emotional Intelligence (PCD+EI) learning model in IRE lessons. The sample comprises 90 students, selected using the Isaac and Michael sampling formula with a 5% margin of error to ensure representativeness. Data were analysed using paired-samples t-tests. The results show a highly significant improvement in student engagement and cognitive learning outcomes (p < 0.001), with relatively consistent gain scores across all participating schools. These findings indicate that shifting from subject-centered instruction to a problem-centered, emotionally supportive approach can enhance students’ critical thinking and participation in learning. The study underscores the potential of integrating real-life problems, interactive instructional strategies, and emotional-intelligence components into IRE curricula. Further research involving larger and more diverse samples is recommended to validate the broader applicability of the PCD+EI model.

Abstract

Abstract

This study examines the implementation of Islamic Religious Education (PAI) learning at Islamic Boarding School (MA Syamsul Huda) with a focus on integrating traditional values and modern approaches. Using descriptive qualitative methods through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document study, the study found that the developed learning model successfully combined classical Islamic boarding school methods (sorogan, bandongan, tahfizh) with modern learning techniques. However, the use of technology is still limited to basic tools such as projectors, facing infrastructure constraints and concerns about reducing the depth of religious understanding. Key findings indicate a gap between the needs of digital native students for technology-based interactive learning and teachers' preferences for traditional methods. The study identified significant potential for a blended learning model that combines face-to-face learning with digital content such as tahfizh applications, religious study videos, and virtual reality simulations. The results emphasize the importance of an evolutionary approach to technology integration, with recommendations for teacher training, infrastructure development, and the design of authentic digital content. The implications of this study indicate that the transformation of Islamic boarding school-based PAI learning in the digital era requires a balance between maintaining core values and adopting pedagogical innovation. These findings provide a conceptual framework for developing a model of religious education that maintains the character of Islamic boarding schools while being relevant to learning needs.

Abstract

Islamic Religious Education (PAI) in schools faces challenges in delivering engaging content in the digital era. Augmented Reality (AR) emerges as a potential innovation to address this issue by offering an interactive and immersive learning experience. Based on the concept of constructivism, AR enables students to directly interact with learning objects, such as visualizations of Qur’anic verses and worship practices, fostering experiential learning and deeper understanding. The implementation of AR has proven to enhance interaction between teachers and students, making discussions more dynamic and learning more effective. However, the adoption of AR in PAI is not without obstacles. Major challenges include limited technological infrastructure in many schools, digital competency gaps among teachers and students, and the lack of IT support staff. In addition, there are difficulties in developing AR content that is both relevant and accurate in accordance with Islamic values, the high cost of implementation, and cultural or ethical resistance rooted in concerns about preserving spirituality. Integrating AR into an already dense curriculum and designing appropriate assessment methods also pose significant difficulties. To overcome these challenges, collaboration among educators is crucial in developing effective solutions that align with Islamic values. Therefore, AR holds the potential to be a transformative tool—not only enhancing the quality of Islamic Religious Education, but also shaping a generation that is both technologically literate and spiritually grounded with a deep understanding of Islam.

Abstract

This study examines the role of dzikir as a cognitive reprogramming intervention in transforming internalized negative beliefs among Muslim students. Rooted in the intersection of Islamic education, cognitive psychology, and emerging neuro-religious perspectives, the study addresses how repetitive parental narratives such as “life is difficult” or “earning money is hard” contribute to the formation of maladaptive cognitive schemas and scarcity-oriented mindsets. Despite the growing body of research on cognitive restructuring, the integration of Islamic spiritual practices into contemporary psychological frameworks remains limited. This study employs a convergent mixed-methods design, combining quantitative and qualitative approaches. Quantitative data were collected through a quasi-experimental pre-test–post-test design involving 80 participants and analyzed using paired sample t-tests and effect size analysis. Qualitative data were obtained from semi-structured interviews with 20 participants and analyzed using thematic analysis to explore participants’ lived experiences and cognitive transformation processes. The findings reveal statistically significant improvements in cognitive belief orientation, including a reduction in scarcity mindset and an increase in positive life orientation and self-efficacy (p < .001). Effect size analysis indicates a strong practical impact of the intervention. Qualitative findings further highlight three key themes: internalized negative narratives, emergence of cognitive awareness, and the transformative role of dzikir in reshaping internal dialogue and emotional states. These results suggest that structured and meaning-oriented dzikir practices can serve as an effective culturally grounded approach to cognitive restructuring. While the study does not directly measure neural activity, the findings provide indirect evidence of possible neurocognitive adaptation associated with repetitive spiritual practices. This study contributes to the development of a Neuro-Religious Cognitive Reprogramming Framework, bridging Islamic spiritual praxis and cognitive science. The findings also offer practical implications for integrating dzikir-based interventions into Islamic education and counseling to promote healthier cognitive patterns and improved psychological well-being.

Abstract

Public speaking is an essential communication skill for students in Islamic boarding schools, particularly for supporting religious learning, public preaching, and social participation. However, many students still experience anxiety, limited confidence, and difficulty organizing ideas when speaking before an audience. This study examines the use of role-playing as a holistic learning method to support students’ public speaking development at Riyadlotul Athfal Al-Ghozali Islamic Boarding School. This study employed a qualitative case study design involving 18 students and 3 teachers selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and documentation during public speaking and pesantren learning activities. The data were analyzed using the interactive model of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, with source and technique triangulation applied to enhance credibility. The findings indicate that role-playing provided students with repeated opportunities to practice realistic communication situations. Students showed improvement in confidence, speech organization, audience engagement, eye contact, vocal variation, and body language. Teachers also observed greater student participation, spontaneity, and willingness to speak in front of peers. Role-playing supports public speaking development by integrating cognitive, affective, and psychomotor dimensions of learning. In the pesantren context, this method is relevant because scenarios can be aligned with Islamic values and daily communication practices, such as religious speeches and group discussions. The study suggests that role-playing can be systematically integrated into pesantren-based public speaking instruction, although broader studies are needed to examine its application across different Islamic educational settings.
