Abstract

Cultivation of plants using hydroponic technology is growing along with the decreasing area of agricultural land every year because it is being converted a lot. Disadvantages of hydroponic cultivation are the relatively expensive price of nutrients and the use of chemicals in nutrient solutions. Efforts that can be made are by utilizing waste chicken feathers to become liquid organic fertilizer as a substitute for inorganic nutrients. This study aims to determine the effect of giving various concentrations of liquid organic fertilizer from chicken feather waste on nitrogen (N) nutrient status, growth and yield of pakcoy plants with hydroponic wick systems. This research was conducted from November 2019 to April 2020 at the Experimental and Research Garden of the Faculty of Agriculture, Fisheries and Biology. This study used a completely randomized design (CRD) with 6 replications and 4 treatment levels of K0 (100% AB Mix), K1 (90% liquid fertilizer), K2 (70% liquid fertilizer), and K3 (50% liquid fertilizer). The results showed that the higher the concentration of chicken feather Liquid Organic Fertilizer, the amount of Ntotal in plant tissue increased. The application of liquid organic fertilizer has an effect on the growth of pakcoy plants. The application of liquid organic fertilizer has an effect on the growth of pakcoy plants. Treatment of 50% liquid fertilizer concentration resulted the best growth of pakcoy plants however lower than AB Mix nutrition.

Abstract

Fall Armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda J.E. Smith) is a new pest species in Indonesia which has the potential to attack corn plantation in Mendo Barat District because it has the highest harvested corn area in Bangka Regency. The purpose of this study was to determine the attack intensity, Symptom Characteristics and distribution of S. frugiperda on corn plantations in Mendo Barat District, Bangka Regency. The study had been conducted in November 2019 to February 2020 using the observation method. Study sites and sampling techniques was carried out by using purposive sampling technique. The results showed S. frugiperda larvae had the same characteristics as those found in Africa, namely the inverted Y pattern on the head, four black dots on the eighth dorsal segment, thick bands on the lateral part and three bright lines on the upper body. Symptoms of an attack in the early vegetative phase of corn were transparent holes in the leaves and shoots, while in the reproductive phase were damaged cob and corn kernels. The number of caterpillars, the highest number of plants attacked and damaged were found in Petaling Banjar Village by 55% intensity of severe attacks. The intensity of relative damage was at 31.6%. Most of the plants attacked and damaged by S. frugiperdawere found mostly in the tasseling and silking (R1) phase and monoculture planting systems. We conclude the S. frugiperda attacked the corn plants in Mendo Barat District and caused various kinds of damage in accordance with the growing stage of corn plants.

Abstract

Genotypic performance in rice is significantly influenced by environmental heterogeneity, necessitating multi-location evaluation to identify adaptive and stable upland rice lines. This study evaluates the uniformity, adaptability, stability, and yield potential of five breeding lines (G1–G5) and five released varieties across two contrasting island environments: Jambi (Sumatra) and Mataram (Nusa Tenggara), from June to December 2024. A randomized block design is employed, and data are analyzed using ANOVA, DMRT, correlation analysis, phenotypic and genotypic coefficient of variation, and broad-sense heritability. Significant differences are detected among genotypes for all traits except filled-grain weight, with G2 exhibiting the highest yield per plot. All traits are significantly affected by location, indicating a strong environmental influence, while genotype and environment contributed independently to trait expression. Correlation patterns are generally consistent across locations, with the strongest association observed between yield per plot and grain weight. The majority of traits exhibit broad phenotypic and genotypic variability (87.5%), and 66.7% of the evaluated traits show high heritability, suggesting substantial potential for genetic improvement. Based on performance, lines G2 (white rice) and G5 (red rice) are recommended for further development and cultivation in upland rice ecosystems in Indonesia.

Abstract

Drought-tolerant upland rice varieties are important to support increased rice production. These varieties must be resistant to biotic and abiotic stress and have high yield. Testing the potential of lines on dry, acid land to measure adaptability and yield. This study aims to determine the yield and determine the highest yielding line of F8 upland rice. This research was conducted from August 2022 to April 2023 in Air Rayak Village, Tanjungpandan District, Belitung Regency. This research was conducted using an experimental method with a randomized block design (RBD). The treatment consisted of 5 F8 lines consisting of 19I-06-09-23-03, 21B-57-21-21-23, 23F-04-10-18-18, 23A-56-20-07-20 and 23A -56-22-20-05 and 5 check varieties consisting of Inpago 8, Inpago 12, Rindang 1, Danau Gaung and PBM UBB 1. Data analysis used the Fisher test (ANOVA) followed by the LSI (Least Significant Increase) follow-up test. The results all lines and varieties tested were able to grow and produce in Belitung Ultisols. The yield of the F8 lines on ultisols in Belitung Regency ranged from 2.00-4.54 kg/plot. The F8 lines that had the highest yield was the 23A-56-20-07-20 line, which was 4.54 kg/plot (white rice paddy) and the 23A-56-22-20-05 line, which was 2.14 kg/plot (brown rice paddy).

Abstract

Breeding of corn plants resulting from crosses experienced problems with inbreeding depression. Inbreeding depression can cause a decrease of good characters in maize lines. Information about inbreeding depression needs to be known so that it does not appear in the maize lines. This research aims to determine the presence of inbreeding depression  in purple corn lines from open pollinated and to determine the morphological character as a selection criterion for the F4 lines. Research using experimental methods. Plant selection was carried out using the ear-to-row method. Isolation of plants using distance and time of planting method. Observation of morphological characters using Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Color Charts and the inbreeding depression test. F4 lines has inbreeding depression on the characters of plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves, male flowering age, female flowering age, cob length, cob weight with husk, cob weight without husk, and weight of 100 seeds . The F4 lines of corn plants that did not experience inbreeding depression on plant height and stem diameter characters in lines F4-PxU-11-25-18 and F4-PxU-11-25-25. Characters that can be used in the selection of F5 generation corn lines are plant height, stem diameter, cob length, cob weight with husk, cob weight without husk, and weight of 100 seeds. These characters can be used as selection criteria for the next generation.
