Abstract

Metacognitive skills are considered a pivotal modal for students to develop critical literacy, especially in reading activities, as part of the main goals of 21st-century language education. These skills also help the students succeed in their learning process because they involve the ability to evaluate one's capacity and achievement in learning. Although much research has been initiated, Korean as a foreign language (KFL) student is little known. To fill the void, this ongoing study investigates the level of metacognitive skills in reading among Indonesian undergraduate students majoring in Korean language education. Employing a descriptive quantitative approach, the researchers distributed a questionnaire and interview on students’ metacognitive skills in critical reading.  What about items about critical reading skills? It also turned out you have interview data. please include here in the abstract. The data were analyzed, focusing on the mean scores and percentages to get the main points of the student's responses and how students apply their metacognitive skills in critical reading. The results showed that as many as 75% of students had a moderate level of metacognitive skills, and only 5.5% had a high level of metacognitive skills. This shows that students' metacognitive abilities still need to be improved.  Of the eight indicators measured, the ability in time management shows a low value. Meanwhile, the ability to implement strategies shows a high value. It can be concluded that students still have to improve their metacognitive skills in critical reading, especially in time management.

Abstract

The ubiquitous presence of mobile devices has benefited the implementation of foreign language learning through Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL). Previous research highlights the portability aspect of mobile devices such as smartphones that can lead to spontaneous, flexible, and personalized learning activities. However, challenges remain; particularly the connectivity issues. The present study seeks to continue the discussion by investigating 79 Indonesian undergraduate students’ experiences and perceptions of MALL in their Korean language classes. The data were obtained by distributing a questionnaire to the students. The validity and reliability coefficients were also measured. Interview sessions were conducted afterward with eleven students to dig for further explanations. The results demonstrate that most students used smartphones for sending messages to peers, checking notifications, accessing materials, submitting their work, and sending messages to lecturers. Regarding the applications used, they frequently utilized smartphones for accessing Google Classroom, Zoom, and WhatsApp during their Korean classes. The results also revealed that while they perceived MALL as useful and flexible for learning Korean toward increased language skills, motivation, autonomy, and critical thinking, technical problems, and connectivity issues remain to be the main challenges. This study discusses some concerns in implementing MALL and its implications for future research.

Dari hasil ini, dapat disimpulkan bahwa pelatihan ini efektif dalam meningkatkan kompetensi guru bahasa SMA untuk menulis artikel ilmiah berbasis penelitian PTK.Writing scientific papers is an important effort to enhance teachers' capabilities and is a primary requirement for career advancement in Indonesia, as per Government Regulation No. 74 of 2008. However, many teachers face challenges in translating their research findings into scientific articles. Factors such as infrequent writing habits, lack of understanding of writing concepts, limited motivation, time constraints, and a shortage of references hinder teachers in scientific article writing. This community service activity aims to strengthen the competencies of high school language teachers in writing publishable scientific articles. Through exploratory mixed methods training, this activity guides teachers in developing their Classroom Action Research (CAR) findings into scientific articles. Data collected includes pre-training, training, and post-training phases, with activities conducted online to accommodate teachers from various regions in West Java. Pre-training results show that most teachers lack experience in publishing articles. The training sessions, focusing on scientific article writing, involved active discussions about CAR research and challenges in research report writing. The main obstacle faced was related to references. Post-training, teachers successfully produced drafts of scientific articles with faculty guidance. These results indicate that the training effectively improves the competencies of high school language teachers in writing scientific articles based on CAR research findings.

Abstract

Social media platforms like TikTok have become popular for sharing language learning content. However, the phenomenon of code-mixing in such content, particularly in the context of Korean language learning, remains underexplored. This study aims to describe the forms of code-mixing present in Korean language learning content on the TikTok account @Eunji.nim, analyze the factors influencing its use and types of code-mixing. The forms of code-mixing are analyzed sociolinguistically using the theory of code-mixing forms by Khusaini (2019), the factors influencing code-mixing are examined using Suandi's theory (Ramadhan et al., 2017), and the types of code-mixing are identified using Wardhaugh's framework (Hamidah, 2015). This research examines five Korean language learning videos from the TikTok account @Eunji.nim. The primary research instrument is a data card, which is used to identify and classify the forms and factors of code-mixing. The data are analyzed descriptively and qualitatively to uncover patterns and underlying factors. The results indicate that utterances in the analyzed videos exhibit various forms of code-mixing. More than half of the instances are in single words, followed by clauses, with phrases being the least common form. Key elements influencing code-mixing include variety and level of speech, function and purpose, speech partner, and topic factors. The types of code-mixing only found situational code-mixing. This study highlights the sociolinguistic complexity of code-mixing in Korean language learning content on TikTok, offering insights into its forms, influencing factors and the types of code-mixing.

Abstract

Research related to the associative meaning contained in the poem '길 (Gil)' in the anthology of poetry and prose by Yun Dong Ju aims to determine the types of associative meanings and meanings contained in one of Yun Dong Ju's poems. The meaning contained in words, phrases, or sentences in poetry can be in the form of meanings associated with something outside the language. Through the study of associative meanings, the meaning of words, phrases or sentences can be known from another point of view. In this research, the method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method. After the analysis process, the writer found 4 connotative meaning data, 6 affective meaning data, 1 reflective meaning data, and 1 collocative meaning data. The most common meaning found in this study is affective meaning. This shows that in the poetry that has been analyzed, many poets use words, phrases or sentences to express the feelings experienced during the Japanese colonial period in Korea.

Abstract

This study explored the pedagogical discourse of experienced Indonesian language teachers (in-service teachers) during the pre-teaching phase, focusing on the communication strategies used when initiating classroom learning activities because initial teacher-student interactions are crucial for shaping engagement and motivation. The qualitative research investigated how teachers designed their communication to create an effective learning environment based on the Learning Activity Framework. The study involved 20 in-service Indonesian language teachers, with data collected through classroom observations. The results revealed that teachers' communication patterns included engaging, focusing, contextualising, modeling, establishing expectations, and goal orientation cycles. Teachers applied two pedagogical communication strategies in each cycle to set learning goals, build interpersonal relationships, and activate students' prior knowledge. These strategies were also used to set expectations, manage classroom rules, and apply interactive questioning to encourage participation. Because teachers play cognitive and emotional roles, their initial communication significantly influences students' readiness and motivation. This study contributes to understanding pedagogical discourse in Indonesian classrooms and emphasises the importance of the pre-teaching phase as a foundation for effective teaching. The findings suggest the need for teacher professional development that emphasises reflective communication to support meaningful student engagement

Abstract

The difference between the writing and pronunciation of the final consonants in Korean language has been considered as one of the causes that makes students learning Korean as a foreign language (KFL) find it difficult to pronounce Korean words correctly. This descriptive qualitative study aimed to investigate the beginner students’ pronunciation of the final consonants in Korean. Data were collected from 15 students of the Korean Language Education Department, FPBS, UPI, who were asked to pronounce 10 Korean words with final consonants. PRAAT application was used to analyze pronunciation errors. The results show that the percentage of final consonant error pronunciation is 37%. Based on the analysis, participanting students who have high GPA, knowledge of pronunciation theory, and Indonesian as a native language pronounced final consonants better. The data also shows that students’ knowledge of vocabulary was not always linear with pronunciation realization. It depended on the phonological and morphological environments of the vocabulary. These analysis results were then used to inform the design of our flipped classroom model for the implementation of blended learning on Korean final consonant pronunciation.

Abstract

This study adopts a Systemic Functional Linguistic (SFL) approach grounded in Halliday’s theoretical framework to investigate Theme-Rheme structures in the Integrated Korean Language textbooks . This research is significant as prior studies on Korean language textbooks have largely overlooked the interplay between thematic structure and ideological representation, leaving a gap in understanding how discourse patterns contribute to implicit cultural messaging. The primary objective is to examine the deployment of marked and unmarked themes as well as the patterns of thematic progression within narrative and descriptive texts. The data are drawn from Volumes 3 and 4 of the textbooks, which encompass cultural, object-related, and activity-based themes. The findings indicate that the majority of clauses adhere to the Simple Linear Thematic Progression pattern, wherein the rheme of one clause becomes the theme of the subsequent clause, thereby contributing to a cohesive and logically sequenced discourse. In certain instances, Complex Linear Progression patterns were also observed, offering extended elaboration of central ideas. Material and relational processes are predominantly employed to represent actions and identity relationships, illustrating how lexical choices such as verbs and conjunctions function to structure the narrative. Furthermore, the analysis reveals the implicit integration of feminist ideology gender roles within the texts, particularly concerning evolving gender roles in contemporary Korean households. The thematic patterns identified reflect broader social values and ideological transformations embedded in the educational material, conveying underlying messages that promote gender equality and advocate for more equitable social roles. The thematic patterns identified in the texts function not only to organize information but also to foreground specific social actors and actions that align with feminist ideology. By consistently thematizing female subjects, progressive roles, or relational identities, the texts reflect and reinforce broader social values of gender equality and contribute to the ideological transformation toward more equitable gender norms.
