Abstract

This study aims to describe the idiomatic meaning of the lexeme "eye" in Korean idioms and to explain the cultural values of Korea reflected within them. It employs a descriptive qualitative approach using content analysis methods. The data consists of 24 idioms containing the lexeme "eye," collected from various sources such as dictionaries, books, and official Korean language websites. The data analysis includes classifying the idioms based on their denotative and connotative meanings, as well as identifying the cultural elements they embody. The findings reveal that idioms with the lexeme "eye" possess diverse meanings, referring not only to visual function in a literal sense but also reflecting emotions, perception, judgment, and social relationships within Korean culture. In this study, the meanings of Korean idioms containing the lexeme "eye" reflect emotions and social dynamics more than just love although love remains an important theme. Cultural values such as social hierarchy, collectivism, and the importance of maintaining self-image are also reflected in these idioms. This study is expected to contribute to Korean language learning as a foreign language, particularly in mastering idioms that are rich in cultural significance.

Abstract

Background: This research discusses the comparison of the representation of state instability in the 2000 film Ditto '동감' with its national remake film Ditto '동감' (2022). The interesting point is there are many studies that have analyzed remake films, but few discuss about national remake films. Purpose: This research aims to fill the research gap by specifically highlighting the comparison of representation in national remake films, between film Ditto '동감' (2000) and its remake film Ditto '동감' (2022), especially on the phenomenon of state instability. Method: Through a qualitative method using John Fiske's semiotic theory, this research analyzes the differences in signs and symbols used by the two films in representing the phenomenon of state instability. The data used are audio, visual, and verbal elements in both films. Results and Discussion: This research shows that although national remake films are remade in the same country that relatively has the same culture and ideology, what and how a phenomena is represented can be very different. This is because representation has no definite standard and is highly dependent on the filmmaker. Conclusions and Implications: The instability of the country in the 2000 film Ditto '동감' is mostly represented through visual elements in the form of news and scenes with minimal dialogue. Meanwhile, the instability of the country in the remake of Ditto '동감' in 2022 is more likely to be represented verbally through dialogue. This research is expected to contribute to the study of semiotics in film, especially intramedium national remake films and aims to be used as teaching materials for Korean language education students to help develop an understanding of semiotics in Korean national remake films.

Abstract

This research is on the formation of compound sentences in Korean, as seen from the uploads on Instagram of former South Korean President Moon Jae-in. On his Instagram, Moon Jae-in uploads photos, videos, and writings containing ideas and responses to things. Researchers see the need to develop writing skills in the Korean Language Education Study Program FPBS UPI. Therefore, the researcher wants to see how Korean speakers form compound sentences according to Korean grammar. As a president, Moon Jae-in is considered able to write in Korean grammar so that it does not cause ambiguity and misunderstanding. The research data found 76 posts by Moon Jae-in and 267 compound sentences. This study also classifies these compound sentences into two classifications, namely 내포문 [nae-pho-mun] 'embedded clause' and 접속문 [jeop-sok-mun] 'conjunctive sentence.' The analysis results show two categories of compound sentence formation patterns in Moon Jae-in's writings: patterns of stacked and non-stacked compound sentence formation. After the analysis was completed, the researcher concluded three strategies for learning to write, namely 1) Students must be able to determine the type of sentence to be made; 2) Students must pay attention to sentence patterns in Korean; and 3) Learners must be careful in choosing the correct grammar.

Abstract

This research discusses the multimodal elements present in the promotional videos of Seoul, South Korea, uploaded on the VisitSeoul YouTube account, in order to examine the representation of Seoul's tourist destinations in these promotional videos. The method used in this study is qualitative descriptive. The data is derived from three promotional videos titled "BTS Life in Seoul," "BTS See You in Seoul," and "BTS 어기영차 서울" obtained from the VisitSeoul YouTube account. The data is categorized based on its semiotic elements and the attributes of the destination images, then analyzed using multimodal theory with a systemic functional linguistic approach, visual language metafunction, intersemiosis between modes, and destination image attributes. The findings indicate that these videos consist of three semiotic elements: linguistic, visual, and audio. The polysemous intersemiotic relationship between linguistic and visual elements provides a broader meaning, and in terms of logical-semantic meaning, verbal text and visual images mutually provide new information, falling under additive intersemiosis. These semiotic elements depict Seoul as a tourist destination associated with nature, offering pollution-free natural conditions, smooth traffic, cultural and artistic attractions, good tourist infrastructure, comfortable tourism atmospheres, engaging activities for tourists, well-developed public infrastructure, and a friendly social environment reflected by its hospitable residents.

Abstract

Poetry is a literary work that is intrinsically linked to the use of metaphor. This study examines the conceptual metaphors found in Indonesian poetry by Chairil Anwar and Korean poetry by Seo Jeong-Ju. Specifically, the research aims to identify the forms of conceptual metaphors present in the poetry of these two poets, using a contrastive analysis approach based on Johnson and Lakoff's theory of conceptual metaphor. The method employed is a qualitative descriptive method, utilizing note-taking data collection techniques. The data consists of 10 poems by Chairil Anwar and 10 poems by Seo Jeong-Ju (서정주). The findings reveal similarities in the use of conceptual metaphors, with both poets predominantly employing structural metaphors and using orientational metaphors the least. However, there are quantitative differences; Chairil Anwar's poetry contains a greater number of metaphors compared to that of Seo Jeong-Ju. Therefore, this research not only provides insight into the use of metaphors in Korean and Indonesian poetry but also serves as a valuable reference for further literary research, particularly in the study of poetry and metaphor.

Abstract

The advantages of incorporating technology-enhanced flipped learning in English classrooms are nothing new. However, the impact of incorporating the learning method on the occurrence and decline of students’ characters has not much been revealed. This study aims to fill the void by exploring the students’ perceptions of whether flipped learning and the use of technology in learning English can instill character education. Eighty-four (n=84) Indonesian undergraduate EFL students participated in this study. A 22-item questionnaire with a checklist and open-ended types was filled out after the students completed a 16-week course. While percentages were obtained from the checklist responses, codes and categories were generated from the open-ended responses. The results revealed that flipped learning could instill character values of responsibility, independence, and curiosity. The in-class group discussion was considered as the most contributing activity to the instillment of character values. Character values of religiosity, patriotism, and nationalism were less occurred among the students. Furthermore, the use of ICT-based learning media such as YouTube, WhatsApp, the Internet, and mobile phone could instill character values of independence, creativity, teamwork, activeness, and criticality. However, few students perceived that such learning media could influence them to commit cheating or become less concentrated during group discussion. This study emphasizes the teacher’s roles in designing learning activities oriented to developing the students’ English language skills and character.
