Abstract

Semantics is the study of meaning in language. One of the linguistic features that can be considered in semantics is figurative language. Short stories are oases of figurative language and literary devices that are used in such a way that they portray a far deeper meaning then the words themselves do. Because the story uses figurative language, readers occasionally have trouble understanding its significance and message. In this study, the researchers examine Roald Dahl's short tale "Lamb to the Slaughter" for the use of figurative language in order to utilize semantic analysis to determine the messages conveyed by the author. This study aims to discover the types and the meaning of the figurative language in the short story “Lamb to the Slaughter” by Roald Dahl by identifying the literal and non literal meaning and then finds the shared semantic features, the message of the story can be revealed. To support the analysis process, the researchers used the theory of semantic to discover the meaning of the figurative language in the story. The theory of figurative language is used to identify the types of figurative language in the story. The researchers applied the theory of message to reveal the true meaning or the message of the story.

Abstract

This research conducts a comprehensive analysis about the Allusion on William Blake’s Selected Poems. The researchers choose three famous poems by William Blake such as ‘The Tyger’,’The Lamb’ and ‘A Poison Tree’. The researchers explored several types of allusion such as religious allusion, literary allusion, historical allusion, and mythical allusion. Furthermore, the researchers also explored autobiographical allusions in order to find the implication of allusion in the poems and Blake’s personal experience and philosophy. Using Bezerman’s approach, the researchers concluded several points. First, the researchers found twelve allusions in Blake’s selected poems. Specifically, there are three religious allusions, three mythical allusions, and two literary allusions in the Tyger. Furthermore, the researchers identified two religious allusions in The Lamb. In ‘A Poison Tree’ there are two religious allusions and two mythical allusions. Allusion is a powerful literary device that connects a text to other works, events, or ideas, enriching the reader's understanding through these connections. In the case of William Blake's poetry, allusion plays a critical role in creating layers of meaning, allowing readers to explore deeper interpretations and examine broader themes.

Abstract

This study examined the manifestation of Jack's multiple personality in the film Marrowbone. The film "Marrowbone," directed by Sergio G. Sanchez, serves as the primary source for this theory. The narrative revolves around a nuclear family including four siblings: Jack Marrowbone, the eldest, followed by Jane Marrowbone, Billy Marrowbone, and Sam Marrowbone. Due to enduring psychological distress caused by their biological father, they are compelled to return to their mother's ancestral residence. The trauma induced depression in Jack and triggered the manifestation of his multiple personality. The objective of this thesis is to examine the primary factors contributing to Jack's manifestation of multiple personality disorder. The data for this thesis was gathered by qualitative methods, namely by analyzing screenplays, dialogue, and scenes from films. The researcher analyzed the data using Haddock as theoretical framework. The findings indicate that Jack possesses three additional personalities, which correspond to those of his deceased younger siblings. The findings of this research indicate that negative previous experiences can have a detrimental impact on an individual's psychological well-being. By analyzing the personality, background, and history of individuals who suffer from this disorder, the audience can gain insight into the factors contributing to its manifestation.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the social construction of masculinity in the phenomenon of klitih gang crime in Yogyakarta. Klitih crimes, involving male adolescents, are viewed as a form of criminal subculture oriented towards violence as a means of gaining recognition and social existence. This research employs a qualitative method with a case study approach. Data were obtained through document analysis, media reports, and online platforms used by klitih gang members. This descriptive qualitative approach provides in-depth insights into the motivations and perceptions of klitih perpetrators in constructing their masculine identity through violence. The findings reveal that hegemonic masculinity plays a significant role in the violent actions committed by the klitih gang. Klitih gang members tend to use violence not for economics gain but as a tool to enhance their social status and reinforce an aggressive and dominant masculine identity. This phenomenon reflects how societal norms surrounding masculinity can drive violent behavior among adolescents. This study is expected to contribute to cultural criminology studies and help in formulating social intervention strategies to address youth violence in Yogyakarta. Keywords: Cultural criminology, hegemonic masculinity, klitih gang, social construction, youth violence

Abstract

This research analyzed conceptual metaphors in the song lyrics of selected songs in Ariana Grande's Eternal Sunshine album, using the theory of conceptual metaphors by Lakoff and Johnson (1980) and with the stylistics approach. The research results showed that there were twelve song lyrics containing conceptual metaphors, which were categorized into two types: structural metaphors and ontological metaphors. Structural metaphors worked by connecting a concrete source domain that usually comes from everyday experiences to an abstract target domain such as ideas, feelings, or experiences that have no physical attributes. These structural metaphors provide a framework for understanding emotions and relationships through concepts of everyday experience. Meanwhile, ontological metaphors conceptualized abstract experiences such as activities, ideas, and emotions as something concrete that has a physical entity The stylistic analysis in this research highlighted the use of diction that reinforces the perceived effectiveness of this metaphor and strengthens the emotional resonance for the listener.
