Abstract

Numerous consequences on East Borneo's multicultural environment will result from the New Capital Country's presence there. Because Indonesia is a cosmopolitan nation with a diversified background, it is crucial to learn multicultural principles there. Thus, including intercultural ideals in textbooks is advantageous. Both the culture of Indonesia and the cultures of other nations must be represented in EFL textbooks. The fact that an EFL textbook is one of the resources students might utilize to learn about the outside world should cause worry. Higher education ought to have featured more cultural representation. In this study, the multicultural ideals portrayed in the listening textbook used at UINSI Samarinda are to be examined. Utilizing the content analysis method, the researcher conducts qualitative research. Klaus (2004) asserts that reliable data references from content are the main emphasis of content analysis. The researcher employed Yuen's (2011) theory, which included the Big C, Little C, perspective, and person categories, to analyze multicultural values. After analysing the data, the researcher found that Little C was the category that was most prevalent in this listening textbook because it portrays cultural practices such as people's daily lives, such as their attire, cuisine, tools, and so on. It may also depend on how people act and how they live their life.

Abstract

Abstract: This community engagement initiative sought to enhance students' reflective literacy by utilizing local cultural narratives at SMPN 1 Loa Janan, Kutai Kartanegara Regency. The program addressed two primary concerns: the deficiency in students' reflective literacy and the restricted incorporation of local culture in literacy activities. The methodology encompassed five interconnected phases: program socialization and participatory mapping, literacy instruction, creative writing workshops, mentorship, and assessment. Data were gathered by observation, pre-test and post-test assessments, and documentation of students' written assignments. The findings demonstrated a marked enhancement in students' comprehension of narrative structure and their capacity to relate local stories to modern circumstances. Creative writing exercises, such as "unusual stories," fostered inventiveness, confidence, and expressive ability among participants. The curriculum fostered a participatory literacy environment within the school, incorporating cultural identification and reflective thought. This effort proved that local narratives can effectively underpin the development of sustained and contextually relevant literacy initiatives in educational institutions. Keywords: junior high school; loa janan; local culture; narrative writing; reflective literacy   Abstrak: Program pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk memperkuat literasi reflektif siswa melalui narasi yang berlandaskan budaya lokal di SMPN 1 Loa Janan, Kabupaten Kutai Kartanegara. Abstract

This research analyzes the forms and meanings of hyperbolic expressions found in the lyrics of the album A Beautiful Blur by LANY. It employs a descriptive qualitative method with Claridge’s (2011) theory of hyperbole as the main theoretical framework, which categorizes hyperbole into seven forms such as single word hyperbole, phrasal hyperbole, clausal hyperbole, numerical hyperbole, the role of superlative, comparison, and repetition. The data were sourced from 13 songs on the album and collected through lyrical analysis. The study found data of hyperbolic expressions, divided into six forms, phrasal hyperboles, clausal hyperboles, single-word hyperboles, numerical hyperboles, comparison hyperboles, and the role of superlative. The findings of this research show that hyperbole in the lyrics of A Beautiful Blur serves as an effective expressive tool for conveying deep emotions. Moreover, the use of hyperbole in this album does not merely beautify the lyrics linguistically but plays a crucial role in reinforcing the emotional meanings conveyed, such as heartbreak, longing, uncertainty in love, and self-acceptance. The songwriter prefers a poetic approach to expressing emotions by using more than one word to create exaggerated effects that are not realistic but possess strong expressive power.Key Word: Expression, Figurative Language, Hyperbole, Lyric

Abstract

This research examines the intricate relationship between oral traditions and indigenous healing practices across Indonesia. This study uses  Java, Bali, Kalimantan and Sulawesi folktales to examine how myths, legends and ritual narratives encode traditional medicinal knowledge. These stories reveal a comprehensive view of health as a  harmony across physical, spiritual, and environmental realms. Through thematic and symbolic analysis, the study shows ethnobotanical ideas, the sociocultural logic of healing, and the narrative roles of herbal cures and traditional healers. Folklore provides therapeutic knowledge, an ecological ethic and moral compass that helps societies live sustainably and pass down information. The study contributes to worldwide discussions on intangible cultural heritage and knowledge system decolonization by placing these tales in cultural and public health contexts. It concludes that folklore is a living repository of medical epistemologies and a significant resource for culturally grounded health discourse in Indonesia and beyond.

Abstract

This research examines the immigrant experience in R.F. Kuang’s Babel: An Arcane History of the Oxford Translators’Revolution (2022), emphasizing the interplay of language, power, and identity within the colonial context of 19th-century Oxford. This project employs a synthesis of postcolonial literary theory and literary cartography to delineate the emotional and spatial trajectories of immigrant characters, with a focus on Robin Swift, a Chinese orphan reared in England. The analysis demonstrates that translation serves as both an instrument of imperial control and a locus of resistance, situating immigrant scholars as both vital and marginalized within the empire. This research employs meticulous textual analysis to reveal patterns of assimilation, alienation, and rebellion, demonstrating how Kuang’s story critiques colonial processes and reasserts linguistic agency. This multidisciplinary approach provides a unique contribution to Babel study by depicting immigrant identity as a dynamic negotiation of cultural memory, displacement, and resistance.

Abstract

This research aimed to (1) discover the profile of the students’ listening anxiety; (2) reveal the students’ English listening comprehension; and (3) uncover whether there is a correlation between students’ listening anxiety and their English Listening Comprehension. This research was designed quantitatively by employing correlational analysis. The sample chosen was 35 fourth semester students in English Department of Universitas Islam Makassar. The instruments were listening anxiety questionnaire consisted of 33 items adopted from Chang (2008) and listening and listening comprehension test consisted of 50 items by Phillips (2001). The results of the instruments were analyzed quantitatively which were then analyzed by using SPSS 21 for the correlational analysis. The results showed that the mean score of the listening anxiety questionnaire was 120.77 which can be concluded as medium anxiety level. Meanwhile, the mean score of the students’ English listening test was 43.14 which could be concluded as fair listening comprehension. Furthermore, the correlational analysis showed that the value of the r-computed was -0.748 meaning that H0 was rejected and Ha was accepted and since the result of the r-computed was negative, it can be concluded that there was strong negative correlation between listening anxiety and listening comprehension of the students meaning that the higher the listening anxiety of the students is, the lower the students’ listening comprehension is and vice versa.
