Abstract

In higher education, critical thinking skills are essential for students to develop their ability to explore problems, questions, or situations, find a solution, and justify their positions. Such skills can be cultivated through sustained, authentic dialogue with peers or in groups. To provide a supportive environment for dialogue and interaction among students, a book club was utilized as an alternative and extension activity of Extensive Reading course within the English Education Study Program at a private university in Indonesia. The book club enables students to connect with others, expressing and exchanging ideas and thoughts, thereby sharpening their critical thinking skills. This mixed-method study investigated the students’ reading and critical thinking skills after participating in the book club, the effectiveness of book club in developing these skills, and the ways in which the book club fostered critical thinking skills. Twenty-three freshmen from one class participated in the study. The instruments used were a reading test, a survey of critical thinking skills, and students’ work. The reading test and  critical thinking survey were administered sequentially after the treatment, while  students’ work was qualitatively analyzed. The findings reveal that book club is effective in developing student’s critical thinking skills,  particularly  in terms of creating alternative t endings to a given story.

Abstract

Many high school students still struggle with speaking, especially pronunciation and word choice that reflects their intended meaning. The study aims to know the effectiveness of using the Cake application to teach speaking skills. This research used a quantitative method and used a pre-experimental design. The sample consists of 35 students from XI F 6 of SMA 2 Bae Kudus. The research used a speaking test as the research data. The result of this study revealed the average value of the pre-test was 34.6, while the average value of the post-test was 49.5. The result of the analysis from SPSS revealed the value of Sig. (2-tailed) 0.00 0.05. If the value has a significance value (p-value) of 0.00, which is smaller than 0.05, then this indicates that the difference between the pre-test and post-test is highly significant. Therefore, the Cake application is effective in teaching speaking skills. Future research might consider the length of the research treatment and according to the material of the subject year.

Abstract

This study investigates how parents support their children's second language (L2) learning in Indonesian bilingual and English-enriched primary schools, using Vygotsky’s Sociocultural Theory and the concept of parental involvement. Involving 27 parents, the research used interviews and observations to explore how their motivations, attitudes, and practices influence children’s L2 development. The findings highlight three key parental roles: motivator, learning facilitator, and resource provider. Most parents showed positive attitudes toward bilingualism and were eager to help their children learn English. However, differences in socioeconomic status, education, and language skills influenced how actively and effectively they could be involved. The study emphasizes the importance of strengthening home-school collaboration and suggests inclusive strategies to help all parents—regardless of background—support their children’s language learning in multilingual contexts.
