Abstract

This study was about students’ perception toward the use of english teacher’s classroom language in speaking skill enhancement. The objective of this research was to find out the high school students’ perceptions toward the use of English teacher’s classroom language in speaking skill enhancement. This study used descriptive case study. The participants of this research were 36 students of class X MIPA 7 of SMA Negeri 11 Semarang. The instrument used in this study was an open ended questionnaire and closed-ended questionnaire. The results showed that students had positive perceptions about the use of English teacher's classroom language needed as the facilitator in the classroom in speaking skills enhancement. The student's opinion also said that when in the classroom, the teacher did not only use English as the classroom language, but mixed it with Indonesian so that students who were not fluent could follow the lesson well.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to find out whether the use of Chinese whisper game was effective to enhancein enhancing vocabulary mastery of young learners of the fifth graders of MI Nurul Huda Sidokumpul. The method of this research was quasi-experimental design because the researcher did not randomize on the sample. The sample of this research consisted of 25 students of class VA as the experimental group and 22 students of class VB as the control group. The researcher used pre-test and post-test for the control group and experimental group to collect the data. The researcher used SPSS v.16.0 software program to analyze the data. The researcher used three steps in this research. They were: pre-test, treatment, and post-test. The result of the pretest and post-test of the experimental group were 58.76 and 91.84, while the result of the pre-test and post-test of the control group were 60.36 and 70. 27. The result of the analysis showed that sig (2-tailed) was 0.000 (or <0.05. It means that there was a significant difference between the two means of post-test. It was concluded that H0 was rejected and H1 was accepted. Therefore, using the Chinese Whisper Game was effective to enhance the vocabulary mastery of young learners.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to find out EFL students’ and teacher’s perceptions of the effectiveness of Zoom applications in English language learning. Qualitative descriptive was used in this research. In this research, 68 students from two classes in grade 11 at SMAN 1 Fakfak in the 2022-2023 school year were used as the subjects of the study. Questionnaires and interviews were used to collect data. According to the results of the questionnaires that were distributed, it shows that from 17 statements of the questionnaires, 14 statements got a positive perception, 2 statements got a negative perception, and 1 statement got a neutral perception of the effectiveness of Zoom application in English language learning. Interviews with 10 students and an English teacher show that 7 students showed a positive opinion, 2 students showed a negative opinion, and one student showed a neutral opinion, while the English teacher showed a positive opinion toward the interview’s question related to the effectiveness of Zoom application in English language learning. The research concluded that EFL students and the teacher at SMAN 1 Fakfak generally approved that the Zoom application was simple to use, interesting, and fun, and had a positive impact on students during English language learning activities.

Abstract

Educational institutions must continue to develop effective learning methods, such as presentation tasks that combine theory and practice. In English learning, apart from language skills, soft skills such as communication, conversation, collaboration, leadership, and problem-solving are very important. Vocational IDN Boarding School has set out to provide quality education and continues to improve learning methods that are different from other schools. This research aims to find out how students perceive the presentation of the English presentation task learning in English learning methods for improving students' speaking skills at a vocational boarding school. In this study, qualitative data were used for analyzing it. Data collection in this research used interviews methods, and involved 20 students from grades 10 and 11. The result reveals that the implementation of presentation tasks in English has gone well. Students are more motivated to practice speaking English to improve their speaking skills. The researchers found the novelty that some students’ implementation of presentation didn’t use the grammar (pattern sentence) and lack of pronunciation. It is hoped that the results of this research can provide nuance or valuable things for presentation development and learning practices in the world of education and will be able to contribute to the literature on English learning in particular and the development of soft skills.

Abstract

This study focused on the KWL (Know-Want-Learned) strategy in students’ reading comprehension of descriptive text. The objective of this study was to find out how the KWL strategy could improve students’ reading comprehension of descriptive text. The design of the research was collaborative classroom action research. This research was conducted in two cycles; each cycle consisted of planning, action, observation, and reflection. By using the purposive sampling technique, the students in XD of a certain school in Semarang were selected as the sample of this study. The sample consisted of 30 students, 20 females and 10 males. The researchers used an observation sheet and a test to collect the data. The result showed that the KWL strategy was a way of teaching reading comprehension of descriptive text. Based on the test score, in cycle one, there were 50% students who achieved a minimum standard score, and in cycle two, 90% students achieved a minimum standard score. Thus, it could be concluded that the KWL strategy could improve students’ reading comprehension of descriptive text in the way of helping students to reach the minimum standard score.
