Abstract

Previous research has demonstrated the effectiveness of digital mind-mapping in improving student learning outcomes, creativity, critical thinking skills, and motivation. However, past studies rarely focused on student engagement when exploring the implementation of collaborative digital mind mapping in higher education. This study explored student engagement in a digital mind-mapping-supported collaborative classroom. The study was qualitative descriptive in nature, involving twenty fourth-semester students from a private university in Indonesia. The data were collected through observation and interview. The findings showed that students engaged cognitively, emotionally, and behaviorally in the collaborative mind-mapping activity. The findings mostly describe student-student and student-task engagement. Therefore, further investigations are needed to examine student-teacher engagement in a mind-mapping-supported collaborative learning setting.

Abstract

Mastering speaking skills poses a challenge for young learners, prompting the search for innovative solutions such as using educational tools. This study explores the impact of TikTok vlogs on the speaking skills of young learners, considering its potential as an educational tool. This study was conducted at one elementary school in Indonesia where the proficiency in speaking skills remained low. Participants of the present study were taken from 54 fourth-grade elementary students and the research utilized pre-test and post-test data analyzed through SPSS 21.00 using an Independent Sample t-test and N-Gain Test. The post-test data showed a significant result since the significance value of the post-test was 0.000 less than the significance level, 0.005, and this made the null hypothesis rejected. The N-gain score further confirmed its effectiveness, with a value of 58.76, compared to the control class's 18.42. These results highlight TikTok Vlog's positive impact, showcasing its potential in modern language education and advocating for its integration into teaching practices. Such compelling outcomes underscore the promising implications of integrating TikTok vlogs in language education, signaling a need for its broader implementation to bolster young learners' speaking skills in educational settings.

Abstract

This study investigated the effectiveness of the Story Completion technique in improving students' speaking proficiency. It focused on secondary school students in Indonesia, addressing a research gap in this specific context. The study involved 60 participants divided into two groups, using a Quasi-experimental design. Data collection included pre-test and post-test speaking assessments. Analyzing the results with an Independent Sample t-test revealed that the Story Completion technique had a significant positive impact on students' speaking proficiency compared to traditional Storytelling. The statistical analysis confirmed the acceptance of the alternative hypothesis and rejection of the null hypothesis. Additionally, the N-Gain analysis indicated that the experimental group achieved a higher mean score, demonstrating superior speaking skills compared to the control group. In conclusion, this study establishes that Story Completion is an effective and engaging method for enhancing students' speaking proficiency. These findings provide support for the use of the Story Completion technique in teaching speaking skills.

Abstract

This research investigates the linguistic features present in text messaging among students enrolled in an English literature program. The study specifically examines the WhatsApp group "Ellite Students Assemble," utilizing the classification of linguistic features developed by Ali, Hasnain, and Beg (2021) and exploring the factors that influence the use of textese. This research employs a qualitative design to analyze linguistic characteristics in digital communication, particularly on WhatsApp. The analysis encompasses morpho-syntactic and phonological features, revealing a complex phenomenon of language adaptation. A detailed examination of WhatsApp texts highlights the occurrence of each linguistic feature, providing insights into the observed patterns and tendencies. The study identifies key influences on texting styles, including informality, speed, efficiency, and creative expression. Interviews with five active participants elucidate the reasons behind their textese choices, demonstrating that individuals adjust their texting styles based on considerations of formality, efficiency, and creative expression. The results illustrate the dynamic nature of language within the WhatsApp context among English literature students. An understanding of these linguistic features and their influences offers valuable insights for educators, researchers, and language enthusiasts, contributing to a comprehensive understanding of contemporary communication practices.

Abstract

This study investigates the use of Memrise, a mobile learning game, to improve EFL students’ speaking performance in academic contexts. Grounded in gamification theory and interactionist theory, which explores how gamified vocabulary and pronunciation tasks could lead to speaking confidence and fluency. Qualitative descriptive research methods were used to thoroughly understand perspectives and points of view of the participants, consisting of thematically analyzed 20 multiple-choice and 6 interview questions. Seventeen Indonesian EFL students completed surveys and interviews. Results reveal that Memrise develops vocabulary retention, pronunciation, and motivation, though limitations persist in feedback mechanisms and academic speaking content. This study contributes to EAP digital pedagogy by providing qualitative insights of students who are unfamiliar with the app and answering how Indonesian EFL learners perceive the use of Memrise to boost speaking skills through academic speaking skill learning development. This study features direct opinions from Indonesian university education students—which is rarely covered in research—on how they use Memrise as a tool to learn speaking skills in an academic context. The findings suggest that while Memrise can facilitate foundational speaking practice and learner engagement, some limitations are found in its usage. Further adaptations are needed to maximize its relevance for academic speaking tasks in EFL classrooms.

Abstract

This study explores English language learners’ perceptions of bimodal subtitles‒simultaneous audio and text in the same language‒as a tool for developing speaking skills. While previous research has predominantly focused on the benefits of subtitles for receptive skills such as listening and vocabulary acquisition, limited attention has been paid to their influence on productive skills like speaking. Adopting a qualitative approach, this study gathers learner insights (N=62) through structured surveys and open-ended responses to examine how subtitled audiovisual materials shape learners’ confidence, pronunciation accuracy, and fluency. Five open-ended questions were grouped into thirty-six thematic EFLs’ responses (N = 532). Findings reveal that learners perceive bimodal subtitles as beneficial in enhancing speech production by offering real-time lexical and phonological reinforcement. Participants also reported an increase in their confidence when practicing spoken English. These perceptions align with prior research on multimodal learning and suggest that bimodal subtitles can be an accessible and effective scaffolding tool in language instruction. The study advocates for greater integration of subtitled media in pedagogical design, particularly in online and self-directed learning environments.
