Abstract

The objective of this research was to find out whether or not it was significantly effective to apply the Inquiry Based Learning Approach in teaching reading comprehension for the tenth grade students. In this research, the researcher proposed two hypotheses. They were null hypothesis (Ho) and alternative hypothesis (Ha). The method applied was pre-experimental with one group pre-test posttest design. The object of this research consisted of 20 students. The data were collected by means of test consisting 20 items of multiple choices. The data obtained were analyzed through three techniques: 1) Individual Score, 2) Conversion of Individual Score Based on Minimum Mastery Criteria, and 3) Matched t-test. The results of this research shows that the students’ mean score in the pre-test was 60.13 and those in the post-test was 75.25. The result of matched t-test was 5.25, which was higher than t-table value (1.725) of 20 with 95% significant level for one tailed-test. Therefore, the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. It means that it was significantly effective in teaching reading to the tenth grade students by applying Based Learning Approach.

Abstract

Being able to speak another language, particularly a foreign language, will not only improve communication, but it will also make it easier to keep up with advances in science and technology. The availability of suitable textbooks is a crucial element in a learning process as an effort to achieve optimal learning. If the teaching materials and the students’ level and maturity are compatible, then the textbooks are deemed acceptable. This research’sgoal is to examine an Interactive English for Children Textbook Oriented to Critical Thinking Skills for Beginner students at SD Negeri 45 Lubuklinggau that has been adapted to meet the needs of Grade 4 Elementary School students. By modifying the ADDIE (Analysis-Design-Development-Implementation-Evaluation) development model, this form of research is considered research and development (R&D). The research participants included 20 students in the 4th grade of an elementary school in Lubuklinggau City, one elementary English teacher, and two lecturers from Bina Insan University, one of whom was an expert in learning media and the other on materials and language. Researchers used observation, interviews, questionnaires, and documentation as data collection methods. The findings revealed that while the evaluation of learning English teacher replies reached 91.66%, the level of applicability of the textbook development outcomes acquired from students’ response reached 91.05%. These findings support the notion that the end result of the construction of textbooks is highly applicable.

Abstract

English proficiency, particularly in speaking, remains a major challenge for university students in Indonesia due to the lack of adaptive learning resources that align with learners' individual needs and contexts. In response to this issue, this research aims to empower Indonesian university students’ spoken English skills and self-confidence by developing adaptive learning materials in the form of a communicative English textbook. This study employed Research and Development (R&D) using the ADDIE development model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation) as modified by Dick & Carey. The analysis phase involved needs assessment through interviews and observations. In the design phase, the textbook structure and learning objectives were formulated. The development phase focused on producing and validating the textbook with input from experts in language, material, and instructional media. The implementation stage consisted of one-to-one trials, small group testing, and large group testing involving university students. Finally, the evaluation phase assessed the validity, practicality, and effectiveness of the developed textbook. The results of this study indicate that the textbook is valid based on expert validation, practical according to lecturers’ and students’ responses, and effective in improving students' speaking performance and confidence. In conclusion, the developed materials provide meaningful, student-centered activities that reflect real communication scenarios, fostering both linguistic competence and affective growth. This research contributes to innovative textbook development within the Indonesian higher education context.
