Abstract

This study examines the model of religious tolerance in Salatiga, a city known for its religious diversity, focusing on the role of Islam in promoting religious moderation. Salatiga has been recognized as one of Indonesia's most tolerant cities due to strong religious awareness, supportive government policies, and the active role of religious leaders in fostering interfaith harmony. The concept of religious moderation in Salatiga emphasizes not only passive acceptance of differences but also active efforts to create peace and mutual support. However, challenges such as social tensions and identity politics still persist. This research, using a qualitative approach with case study methodology, explores the implementation of religious tolerance in Salatiga through in-depth interviews, documents, and participatory observations. The findings highlight key strategies for maintaining tolerance, including the involvement of religious leaders, optimizing local wisdom, implementing social justice-based government regulations, promoting inclusive religious understanding, and integrating tolerance into local traditions. The study concludes that while Salatiga serves as a strong example of religious tolerance, continuous efforts are needed to foster peace and strengthen social cohesion in a pluralistic society.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to examine the transformation of students' attitudes towards Islamic wasathiyyah values and ecological awareness from an eco-theological perspective, emphasizing a scientific approach in the Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training (FTIK) at UIN Salatiga. The background of this study is based on the increasing global challenges such as religious intolerance and environmental degradation, which demand an integrative response from Islamic education. Through a scientific approach, Islamic values are integrated with the principles of social sciences, pedagogy, and environmental sustainability to form moderate, inclusive, critical, participatory, and ecologically responsible attitudes. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method, utilizing triangulation techniques through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and analysis of curriculum documents and RPS to collect data systematically. The study's results indicate a shift in students' attitudes, from a normative understanding to more environmentally conscious and socially just practices. However, challenges remain, such as weak religious-based ecological literacy, suboptimal integration of cross-curricular values, and minimal responsive faculty policies. These findings indicate great potential in developing a thematic curriculum based on wasathiyyah values and an interdisciplinary approach. The conclusion emphasizes the need for curriculum reform, increasing the capacity of educators and teaching staff, as well as strengthening an academic culture based on research and values, to sustainably and scientifically internalize the values of wasathiyyah and eco-theology.

The incorporation of multicultural values in Islamic education textbooks needs to be fostered as the endeavor to raise Muslim’s inclusive religious awareness. In response to this growing need, this study describes the highlight of multicultural education and multicultural values-based learning materials of Islamic education as well as well-planned learning processes. Grounded in a qualitative explorative descriptive study, it provides a comprehensive content analysis of Islamic education textbooks reinforced with a phenomenological approach. The primary sources of research were Islamic education textbooks for tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grades in secondary high schools located in Salatiga, Central Java, Indonesia. Secondary sources were obtained through in-depth interviews with the teachers and students. Findings of this study demonstrate that firstly, not only did the textbooks cover the transfer of knowledge, but they also promoted multicultural values, so that the students upheld their cultural identities. Secondly, the learning materials introduced not only ritualistic symbols, but also the relationship between religious symbols and the existing reality. It encourages the students to think inclusively regarding unity in diversity. Finally, multicultural values embedded in the learning process involved tolerance, harmony, a culture of mutual respect, democracy, and maintenance of faith with good morality in social solidarity and interaction.

Abstract

Wasathiyyah Islam is essential in shaping students’ character in Islamic higher education. However, standardized instruments do not assess students’ attitudes toward these values. This study aims to develop a valid and reliable instrument to measure wasathiyyah values among students at the Faculty of Islamic Education and Teaching (FTIK), UIN Salatiga. Using a Research and Development (R&D) design adapted from the Borg and Gall model, the study included item development, expert validation, field testing, and revision. The instrument was tested on 200 students from the Islamic Education and Science Education programs using a Likert scale. Data collection was conducted through surveys. Expert review confirmed content validity, and reliability testing using Cronbach’s Alpha produced a score of α = 0.89, indicating high internal consistency. The values measured: tawasuth (moderation), i’tidal (justice), tasamuh (tolerance), tawazun (balance), syura (deliberation), islah (reform), qudwah (exemplary leadership), muwathanah (citizenship), and musawwah (equality), were theoretically integrated into the instrument. Results showed high student agreement with the values, supporting the instrument’s effectiveness. This tool helps evaluate character education and can inform future research and curriculum development in Islamic higher education.
