Abstract

This article focused on analyzing the types of conjunctions found in the newspaper Bali Travel News edition May 6-19th, 2022. The data were taken from the Bali Travel News edition of May 6-19th, 2022. This research used an observation approach in the process of collecting the data, first reading the article in the newspaper, then underlining the conjunctions that were found in the article and classifying the conjunctions based on the types of conjunction. This research used the qualitative method to analyze the data. It was started by analyzing the types of conjunctions based on the theory from Halliday and Hassan (1976). The result shows the total of conjunctions found in the article of newspaper 357 data, consist of additive relation with 229 or 64,1% data, adversative relation 10 or 2,8% data, causal relation 106 or 29,7% data, and temporal relation 12 or 3,4% data. The most common conjunctions found in the newspaper of Bali Travel News are additive relations because this type of additional information and correlative conjunctions are really needed when writing an article in the newspaper.

Abstract

This research aims to determine the symbolic meaning of pupuh pucung entitled 'Bibi Anu' which is used as an accompaniment to nelu bulanin rituals. The data were taken from a video of the Nelu Bulanin ceremony from YouTube with the address https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TTNtDppLjc0. The data were collected by applying the observation method through watching the video, transcribing the lyrics, reading, and note-taking the words or phrases that contain symbolic meaning. There were five stanzas of pupuh pucung used as data sources. This research used a qualitative approach. The analysis was carried out by applying the cultural-linguistic theory proposed by Palmer (1996). This research shows that the lyrics of 'Bibi Anu' use linguistic units like words and phrases with symbolic meaning as a means of expressing the beliefs of Balinese Hindu society. This research has proven that Pupuh Pucung ‘Bibi Anu’ not only accompanies the ritual but is an inseparable part of the ritual itself because the lyrics contain belief values as an inseparable part of Balinese culture.

Abstract

Abstract Feminism is manifested worldwide and it is represented by various institutions committed to activity on behalf of women's rights and interests. This study used maleficent 2 mistress of evil movie by Robert Stromberg. In this movie there is nine main character there are Maleficent, Aurora, Prince Phillip, Diaval, Queen Ingrith, King John, Conall, and Borra. This study has two aims: (1) to identify the types of feminism depicted in the movie through the main characters, and (2) to analyze how the characters died fighting for their rights. The study was based on Tong's (1998) theory, and the data has been collected by watching the movie repeatedly. To observe the main characters' conversation, a descriptive study and textual analysis have been used. According to the findings of this study, liberal feminism is the most often portrayed type of feminism. The main characters in the story struggled to gain independence and their rights. Maleficent and Aurora were successful in uniting two kingdoms and bringing the moors and people together in peace and happiness. This study used the documentation method to collect the data and the method used in analyzing data was qualitative.

Abstract

This study is entitled “An Analysis Types of Slang Word Found in Green Day Song Lyric Album”. The aim of this study is to identify the types of slang words that are found in the song lyrics of Green Day in the five albums: “1,039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours” (1990), “Kerplunk !”(1991), “Dookie” (1994), “Father Of All..” (2020), and the last album “American Idiot” (2004). The method being used in this study is descriptive qualitative method and the technique  is observation technique. The theory used was found in  Kipfer and Chapman (2007). The study concludes that the secondary slang words are the only type that were found in the Green Day song lyrics

Abstract

This study deals with the analysis of code mixing phenomenon found in Wardah Beauty YouTube channel on a special episode called Heart to Heart with Dewi Sandra. This study aims to identify the types and reasons of code mixing found in Wardah Beauty YouTube channel. The theory from Hoffman (1991) is applied to analyze the data. In achieving the objectives, the descriptive qualitative method is used to analyze the data. In collecting the data, this study uses observation and note-taking techniques. The data were taken from the Wardah Beauty YouTube channel videos from August 2019 to May 2021. Meanwhile, the informal method was used to presenting the data. The dominant type found in this study is intra-sentential, and the lowest occurrence was obtained by involving a change of pronunciation. Meanwhile, talking about a particular topic becomes the dominant reason of code mixing found in this study.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyse the language style used by Jack Ma in the video “Dialogue with Jack Ma, Alibaba Group, Kief 2019”. This research is conducted by applying the theory five types of language style proposed by Joos (1967). The data were taken from the conversation between Nik Gowing as the host, Jack Ma as the guest and audience business in Ukraine. This research used qualitative method in analysing the data. This study found three types of language style used in dialogue Jack Ma, Alibaba group. The study found formal style, consultative style and casual style on this research. Formal style is used dominantly found in the dialogue. The use of formal style by a word of choice, situation and condition, participant and place. In this style the researcher found six data, while in the casual style, the researcher found five data, for the consultative style, the researcher found five data used by Jack Ma in the video” Dialogue with Jack Ma, Alibaba Group, Kief 2019.

Abstract

Abstract

This research examines illocutionary acts in the context of the Rich Roll's Podcast, focusing on the words spoken by renowned motivator David Goggins. The study aims to identify the most frequently used type of speech act and analyze their speech act arrangement throughout the podcast. Illocutionary acts go beyond literal meaning and encompass the speaker's intended effects, such as making promises, asking questions, giving orders, expressing opinions, making suggestions, and issuing apologies. The data source in this research was taken in Rich Roll Podcast with David Goggins as the guest of this podcast. The methodology that is used in this research is divided into 2 methods which are qualitative methods and quantitative methods. The data was supported by Searle's Theories that conveyed speech acts into 5 categories which are assertive, directive, commissive, expressive, and declarative. This data shows that the type of speech acts that don't exist from the data source are the Commissive and Directive Speech acts. Calculating the data in a total percentage can be shown as Assertive is 40%, Expressive is 46,7%, Declarative is 13,33% and 0% for Commissive and Directive.

Abstract

The main goal of this research is to identify the types and to analyze the reasons of code-switching found in Nessie Judge's Instagram captions. This study focuses on the captions where both of Indonesian and English languages are alternated. The study employs both descriptive and qualitative approach. The analysis draws upon Poplack's theory (1980) to classify the types of code-switching present in the data, while Hoffman's theory (1991) is employed to examine the underlying reasons behind these language switch. Both formal and informal method employed in presenting the findings. The analysis reveals 18 data of inter-sentential Code-switching, 13 data of intra-sentential Code-switching, and 7 data of tag switching. The reasons for these Code-switching occurrences are diverse: talking about particular topic 37% of the instances, quoting someone's words 10%, expressing feeling about something accounts for 21%, interjections makes up 21%, repetition used for clarification constitutes 8% and expressing group identity represents 3%.

Abstract

This study aims to find out types of language style and the factors that influenced the main character in Wednesday series choosing the language style. The data source of this study is Wednesday series. This study used a qualitative method in analyzing the data. This study applied the theory from Joss (1967) in categorizing the type of language style and the theory from Holmes (1993) to find out the factor that influenced the use of language style. This study found that the main character applied four type of language style from 136 data that was found, it was fifty-three data (39%) of casual style, forty-three data (32%) of formal style, twentyfive data (18%) of intimate style, and fifteen data (11%) consultative style. The dominant style used by the main character in Wednesday series was casual style because the main character in the Wednesday series namely ‘Wednesday’ who is stubborn, ignorant, and doesn't care who he is talking to, so he often uses the casual style when talking to people who are older than him. This study found there are four factors that influenced language style selected by the main character in Wednesday series, namely participant, setting, topic and function.
