Abstract

Qurban, the ritual slaughter of livestock performed during Eid al-Adha, is one of the most anticipated acts of worship among Muslims, yet classical jurists disagree on the precise period within which it must be carried out. This study compares the juristic reasoning of Imam Ibn Mas’ud al-Kasani, a prominent Hanafi authority, and Imam Abd al-Karim al-Rafi’i, a leading Shafi’i scholar, on the permissible timeframe for the sacrifice. Using a qualitative, library-based design with an analytical approach, the study draws primarily on al-Kasani’s Bada’i al-Sana’i and al-Rafi’i’s al-Aziz fi Sharh al-Wajiz, supported by secondary literature, analyzed descriptively and comparatively. The findings show that al-Kasani limits the sacrifice to three days, from the tenth to the twelfth of Dhu al-Hijjah, based on companion reports, whereas al-Rafi’i extends it to four days, through the thirteenth, relying on a hadith traced to the Prophet. This divergence directly affects the legal validity of sacrifices performed on the fourth day.
