Abstract

This article discusses signs in the form of writing in public spaces, especially found on bemo (public transportation) in Kupang city through a linguistic landscape approach. The topics discussed are the language used, the form of the language, the dominance of the language, and the perception of the people. Data were obtained from photographs with digital cameras and interviews with informants and then analyzed qualitatively. As a result, the language used on the bemo is multilingual and dominated by English in the form of words, phrases, clauses, sentences, and acronyms. English dominates in each lingual unit except in the form of acronyms. Regarding the use of language in public spaces, especially the written language found on bemo, people feel happy if they find their language visible in public spaces. Therefore, the respondent expected and suggested that it is important to maintain their language. However, they are aware that their mother tongue cannot help in terms of the economy, therefore, government intervention through local language policies is needed for the language survival.

Abstract

This study focused on middle voice in Uab Meto. The point of this study is to describe the morphosyntactic element of the middle voice in Uab Meto. There are three forms of middle voice constructions in Uab Meto, namely reflexive, reciprocal, and lexical. A subject-reflective enclitic demonstrates the middle's reflexivity. Ma-, which is usually linked to the verb, signifies reciprocity. es nok es "each other" (lit. "one with one") is an additional signal that the construction is reciprocal, but its use is optional. There is a lexical middle verb type that is unmarked and syntactically intransitive. The argument's interpretation depends on the speaker's perceptions of the circumstances.

Abstract

Artikel ini mendiskusikan metatesis dan memberikan pemahaman yang lebih jelas tentang sifat metatesis dalam bahasa Dawan. Data penelitian ini merupakan data primer yang diperoleh langsung dari lapangan di wilayah penutur bahasa Dawan. Data dalam penelitian ini adalah dialek Amanuban di kecamatan Kolbano, kabupaten Timor Tengah Selatan. Data diperoleh melalui metode pengamatan partisipatif dengan teknik catat untuk mendaftar kata-kata metatesis. Selain itu metode wawancara terhadap penutur bahasa Dawan  juga dipakai untuk menggali sekaligus menguji keberterimaan dari sebuah kata dan penggunaanya dalam kalimat. Pengetahuan peneliti (intuitif data) juga digunakan untuk mendukung metode pengamatan dan wawancara. Hasil analisis data memperlihatkan bahwa proses metatesis dalam bahasa Dawan bukan merupakan gejala fonologis saja tetapi saling terkait antara fonologi, morfologi, sintaksis, semantik, dan wacana. Artikel ini dapat memberi dampak, baik teoretis maupun praktis terutama sebagai salah satu sumber dalam dokumentasi bahasa.

Abstract

This article discusses the language form and the symbolic function of quotes or slogans on transportation around Kupang city. The data of this study were collected directly from the transportation around the streets. They were analyzed using qualitative methods, while the symbolic functions were analyzed using a critical discourse analysis model. It found that land transportation uses multi-languages, English, Indonesian, Kupang Malay, Uab Meto (Dawan), Rote, Sabu, Hebrew, Latin, and Betawi. Some use a particular style of language, such as p27den, and a combination of two or more languages or dialects. English is the most dominant language used. The lack of local languages shows massive cultural changes and people's attitudes toward local languages. The linguistic unit consists of words, phrases, clauses, sentences, and acronyms. English is dominant in each linguistic unit except in acronyms. The quotes represent six themes: love, religion, music, power, family, and regionalism. In general, They carry two functions, power relations, and identity.

Abstract

This article discusses code-switching used by teachers during the teaching and learning of English as a foreign language in the classroom. This is the result of a case study at a junior high school in Lembata, East Nusa Tenggara which aims to reveal the types and reasons for code-switching used by teachers in teaching. Data was obtained by observation and interviews with three English teachers who teach in six classes. The research results show that teachers use three types of code-switching, namely inter-sentential, intra-sentential, tag code-switching, and inter-participant code-switching. The use of these types depends on the teaching and learning situation in the classroom. The use of code-switching is based on the reason that it is used as a translation, to increase vocabulary, explain difficult words or topics, change topics, clarify subjects, avoid boring situations, and provide information. The use of code-switching helps teachers to teach and students to learn English, especially for new learners

Abstract

English is an international language familiar to everyone, relating to various social aspects. It can be found and easily seen or read in public spaces, such as on billboards or banners, and business names, such as shops, hotels, restaurants, transportation, and others. English is used in varied lingual forms and even the possibility of writing and grammatical errors. This research deals with the written English on outdoor signs in Kupang City, focusing on language errors and their causing factors. This research applied a qualitative analysis to explore the type of language errors found in written English in the outdoor signs, the outdoor signs that contain written English language errors, and the factors that cause language errors. The data for this study are the outdoor signs in Kupang City, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia that contain language errors in written English. All data are collected using photographic techniques using a digital camera. The next step is to transcribe the written English containing language errors and analyze the data qualitatively. The result of the study shows that the main errors are due to the spelling system, namely, deleting a sound and replacing the English sound with Indonesian. The analysis of the language errors also revealed that they are caused by English language competence and supported by the interference of the author or sign producers’ first language. This study may contribute significantly, especially for language learners, since English on outdoor signs can be used as authentic material for learning and English teaching and learning in schools.

Abstract

This paper is aimed at analyzing the applicative construction in Dawan Language. Applicative construction used in this paper refers to the process of advancement or promoting the peripheral argument to become a core argument. This process resulted in the valence raising of the verbs, such as an intransitive becoming transitive and a transitive becoming ditransitive. It is found that there are five types of applicative construction in Dawan language, namely benefactive, locative, recipient, instrumental, and source. Based on the analysis, it is found that there is no applicative affix in Dawan language that functions to raise or indicate a newly added argument. So, the process of raising is done through the advancement or promoting a peripheral argument to the core argument. This process of advancement then changes the role of the argument, where the oblique becomes undergoer and the undergoer argument moves to an oblique position, but not as an adjunct but as a core oblique.

Abstract

Artikel ini adalah hasil penelitian lapangan yang bertujuan untuk menelusuri dan menganalisis fenomena graffiti sebagai tanda ruang publik kota Kupang dalam kerangka linguistik lanskap. Penelitian ini mengungkap kontestasi bahasa di ruang publik yang terekspresi lewat graffiti, bentuk lingual, fungsinya sebagai sebuah tanda linguistik lanskap, dan strategi komunikasi yang dipakai pada graffiti dalam menyampaikan pesannya. Penelitian ini didesain secara kualitatif untuk meganalisis fenomena keberadaan graffiti di Kota Kupang. Data penelitian ini merupakan jenis data primer yang berasal dari graffiti yang ada ruang-ruang publik Kota Kupang yang dikumpulkan melalui metode pengamatan dan dokumentasi. Analisis data menggunakan metode analisis konten kualitatif (qualitative content analysis) dan analisis wacana kritis. Hasil penelitian mengungkapkan bahwa terdapat lima bahasa, yaitu bahasa Indonesia, Melayu Kupang, bahasa Inggris, Alor, dan Latin. Satuan lingualnya didominasi oleh klausa atau kalimat, akronim, frasa, dan kata. Fungsi graffiti sebagai sebuah tanda ruang publik adalah fungsi simbolik seperti budaya dan identitas. Strategi yang digunakan adalah komunikasi secara langsung, metafor, simbolisme, dan akronim untuk mengkomunikasikan perasaan mereka tentang diri mereka sendiri dan dunia luar. Salah satu aspek yang memerlukan penelusuran lebih lanjut adalah motivasi dari pembuat graffiti (street artists) dalam mengekspresikan pesan mereka di ruang publik.
