Abstract

This study aimed to examine the comparative effectiveness of both models in improving runners’ speed and endurance and to determine which produces superior physiological adaptations. A quasi-experimental design with a two-group pretest–posttest format was used. Twelve male athletes (aged 17–22 years) were divided into two groups: K1 (Time to Distance, n=6) and K2 (Time to Time, n=6). Speed (30 m sprint) and endurance (1600 m run) tests were administered before and after six weeks of training at 75–90% HRmax intensity. Significant improvements were observed in both groups (p < 0.05). For speed, K1 improved from 4.35 ± 0.21 s to 3.95 ± 0.18 s (p = 0.001; d = 1.90), while K2 improved from 4.33 ± 0.24 s to 4.12 ± 0.19 s (p = 0.015; d = 1.05). For endurance, K1 improved from 6.45 ± 0.31 min to 5.98 ± 0.27 min (p = 0.001; d = 2.00), and K2 from 6.48 ± 0.34 min to 6.18 ± 0.29 min (p = 0.012; d = 1.15). Independent t-test results confirmed significant intergroup differences (p < 0.05). The study concludes that the Fartlek Time to Distance model is more effective in enhancing speed and endurance through improved anaerobic adaptation and biomechanical efficiency. Practically, this research provides an evidence-based foundation for coaches and athletes to optimize performance through structured fartlek training design.IM Keywords: Fartlek, speed, endurance, middle-distance runners, athletic performance

Abstract

Background: Efficient recovery after high-intensity interval training (HIIT) is crucial for maintaining optimal performance and minimizing the risk of injury. Objectives: This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of combining hydrotherapy contrast baths and full-body massage in accelerating physiological recovery after a HIIT session, compared to the application of a single method. Methods: This study employed a pre–post quasi-experimental design with three parallel groups (n = 45; 15 participants per group) to analyze the effectiveness of hydrotherapy combined with whole-body massage compared with each method applied separately. Participants were assigned to one of three conditions: (1) hydrotherapy contrast bath only, (2) full-body massage only, and (3) a combined intervention using both techniques. Physiological recovery was assessed using validated instruments, including heart rate monitors for heart rate recovery (HRR), portable lactate analysers for blood lactate concentration, and a visual analogue scale (VAS) for perceived muscle soreness. Data were analysed using the Shapiro–Wilk test, paired-sample t-test, and One-Way ANOVA. Results: The findings demonstrated that the combined hydrotherapy–massage protocol resulted in greater improvements than the single-method groups, particularly in lactate reduction (e.g., -3.1 ± 0.8 mmol/L vs. - 1.9 ± 0.7 mmol/L and - 2.0 ± 0.6 mmol/L; p<0.05) and faster HRR. Participants in the combined group also reported significantly lower muscle soreness (p<0.05). Conclusions: This suggests that integrating contrast bath hydrotherapy with full-body massage enhances circulation, accelerates metabolic waste clearance, and improves subjective recovery following HIIT. Future studies are recommended to include larger samples, compare different hydrotherapy temperatures, or examine long-term adaptations from repeated recovery sessions.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of two training models, distance to distance and interval with mini hurdle, in improving the speed and endurance of middle-distance runners. The main problem addressed is the need for a training approach capable of simultaneously optimizing speed and endurance performance through the integration of physiological and biomechanical components. This research employed a quasi-experimental method with a pretest–posttest two group design. The subjects were 15 male middle-distance athletes (800–1500 m) randomly divided into two groups, each undergoing an eight-week training program with a frequency of three sessions per week. Measurements were conducted using a 30-meter sprint test (speed) and a 1600-meter run test (endurance). Statistical analysis showed that both training models significantly improved speed and endurance variables (p < 0.05). The interval with mini hurdle group demonstrated a higher improvement in speed (10.5%) with a large effect size (d = 1.45), while the distance to distance group achieved a 7–8.5% improvement in endurance. A significant difference between groups was found in the speed variable (p = 0.034; d = 0.91). The study concludes that both training models effectively enhance athlete performance, with interval with mini hurdle being superior in developing speed through neuromuscular stimulation, whereas distance to distance focuses more on improving aerobic endurance. Conclusion, these findings provide a scientific basis for coaches to design evidence-based, efficient, and measurable training programs. Keywords: interval training, speed, endurance, middle-distance running.
