Abstract

ABSTRACT Background: Composite resin is the most commonly used restorative material. One of properties composite resins is surface hardness can change due to exposure of the restorative material to oral fluids such as alcoholic mouthwash. The degradation that occurs due to alcoholic mouthwash is able to reduce the surface hardness of the nanohybrid composite resin. Glycerin is able to increase the hardness of the composite resin by perfecting the polymerization that occurs in the restorative material when exposed to light cured light. Objectives: This study aims to determine the effect of glycerin application on the hardness of nanohybrid composite resins after immersion in alcoholic mouthwash. Methods: A total of 32 samples of nanohobride composite resin in this study were made in the form of a cylinder with a diameter of 5 mm and a thickness of 2 mm. The nanohybrid composite resin samples were divided into control and treatment group by applying glycerin on the sample surface before light curing. The study was continued by immersing the sample into artificial saliva for 24 hours and alcoholic mouthwash for 6 hours. The research continued with surface hardness test using the Vickers Hardness Tester. Result : Paired bivariate T test showed a significant difference between the two groups (p<0.005). The conclusions of this study indicate that the application of glycerin has an effect on the hardness of the nanohybrid composite resin after immersion with alcoholic mouthwash. Conclusion: The application of glycerin affects the hardness of the nanohybrid composite resin after immersion with alcoholic mouthwash.  Key words: Glycerin application, Hardness, Nanohybrid composite resin

Abstract

Coffee can cause discoloration in the hard tissues of teeth due to the presence of chlorogenic acid, which acts as a staining agent. Different types of coffee bean compositions have varying levels of staining agents. This study aims to investigate the influence of coffee bean composition (100% Arabica, 70%-30% Arabica-Robusta blend, 50%-50% Arabica-Robusta blend, and 100% Robusta) on the severity of tooth discoloration. This research is a quasi-experimental study with a pre-test and post-test control group design to assess the effect of coffee immersion on tooth color change (ΔE). The study involved 24 human premolar tooth samples divided into four treatment groups. Before treatment, the color of the samples was measured (pre-test data), and then the samples were immersed in a coffee solution for 48 hours. After immersion, the color of the samples was measured again (post-test data). Paired t-tests were conducted to determine the significance of differences between pre-test and post-test treatment. Subsequently, Kruskal-Wallis tests were performed to assess the significance of differences among the four treatment groups. Paired t-tests for all groups showed significant results (p < 0.05). Kruskal-Wallis tests indicated a significant difference among the four treatment groups (p < 0.05), with the highest tooth color change (ΔE) observed in the 100% Robusta coffee treatment group and the lowest color change in the 100% Arabica coffee treatment group. The composition of coffee bean types has an impact on the severity of tooth discoloration.

Abstract

Serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) levels increases in burn tissue damage. Several bioactive compounds found in Ashitaba, are expected to reduce serum ALP levels and enhance the process of wound healing. This study aims to prove that administration of oral Ashitaba extract can reduce serum ALP levels in rats exposed to burn trauma. This study uses true experimental post-test control group design with a total of 20 Sprague dawley rats as samples. All samples were inflicted with 2nd degree burn wound and divided into 2 groups, treatment group (Ashitaba extract 300 mg/KgBW) and control group. Blood serum were analyzed for ALP levels on the 2nd, 8th and 14th days. Kinetic-IFCC method was used to find serum ALP levels. Data was analyzed using Mann-Whitney Test, paired T-test amd independence T-test. Scalded wound size was measured macroscopically over the course of 21 days to find contracture rate. In conclusion, Ashitaba extract is not proven to significantly reduce the serum ALP levels, increase contracture rate and enhance burn wound healing process. However, there was slight increase in contracture rate in treatment group as compared to control group. In addition, there was a lower ALP levels in treatment group as compared to control group in day 8.

Abstract

Background: Discoloration of the composite resin can be cleaned using chemicals. However, chemicals are still being debated because they have some side effects. This has led researchers to look for natural materials that can be used to clean composite resins. Honey pineapple contains organic acids and the enzyme bromelain which can be used to clean teeth. Objectives: This study aims to determine the effect of honey pineapple juice on the color change of composite resin due to coffee immersion after soaking honey pineapple juice for 1, 3, and 5 days. Methods: This type of research is an experimental laboratory with a pre test - post test group design. The research data were tested using paired t test and one way ANOVA test. Results: The results showed that there were differences in the color change of the composite resin due to coffee immersion after soaking honey pineapple juice for 1, 3, and 5 days. Conclusions: There is an effect of honey pineapple juice on the color change of the composite resin due to coffee immersion and there are differences in the color change of the composite resin due to coffee immersion after soaking honey pineapple juice for 1, 3, and 5 days. The highest color change occurred in immersion for 5 days. Keywords: Coffee Immersion, Discoloration of composite resin, Honey pineapple juice

Abstract

Background and Purpose: Epilepsy, a neurological condition, is defined by the occurrence of unprovoked seizures on at least two occasions, with a minimum interval of 24 hours separating the initial and subsequent events. Individuals diagnosed with epilepsy frequently exhibit vitamin D deficiency, which influences various metabolic processes, including modifications to lipid profiles. Despite this, the precise relationship between serum vitamin D levels and lipid profiles continues to be a subject of ongoing investigation. This study aimed to examine the correlation between serum vitamin D concentration and lipid profiles. Methods: A cross-sectional study design was employed, encompassing 29 patients with epilepsy who were treated at the outpatient clinic of the Department of Neurology, Diponegoro National Hospital, Semarang. Participants were divided into two groups based on their serum vitamin D levels: the vitamin D deficiency group (n=9) and the vitamin D insufficiency group (n=20). Demographic and clinical information was gathered, vitamin D levels were measured using ELISA, and lipid profiles were assessed using spectrophotometry. A chi-square analysis was conducted to explore the relationship between serum vitamin D levels and lipid profiles in patients with epilepsy. Results: The average vitamin D concentration was 13.45 ± 5.74 ng/mL, with all participants showing deficient vitamin D. Examination of lipid profiles indicated mean values for total cholesterol at 183.76 ± 38.34 mg/dL, LDL cholesterol at 103.55 ± 34.92 mg/dL, HDL cholesterol at 48.72 ± 15.98 mg/dL, and triglycerides at 158.14 ± 104.48 mg/dL. Statistical analysis revealed that LDL levels were significantly elevated in the group with insufficient vitamin D (p = 0.029), while there were no significant differences in triglyceride, total cholesterol, or HDL levels. Statistical analysis revealed that LDL levels were significantly elevated in the group with insufficient vitamin D (p = 0.029), while there were no significant differences in triglyceride, total cholesterol, or HDL levels. Conclusion: There may be a link between low vitamin D levels and adverse LDL cholesterol levels; however, further research is required to confirm this.
