Abstract

This research is using the Direct Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA) Technique to Teach Reading Comprehension for Eleventh Grade Students. The research problems of this research are how the use of the Direct Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA) technique may increase reading comprehension for eleventh grade students and what are the obstacles of the students in using the Direct Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA) technique in reading comprehension. The purposes of this research are to find out whether the Direct Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA) technique may increase reading comprehension for eleventh grade students and to know the obstacles the students face in using the Direct Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA) technique in reading comprehension. The subject of this research was the students of the second grade of SMAN 1 Kuta Baro in the academic year 2017-2018, which consisted of 18 students. The research was started on October 10th, 2017 and continued until October 24th, 2017. This is quantitative research with two research instruments, namely a test (pre- and post-test) and a questionnaire. Finally, the researcher concludes by suggesting that English teachers can use the DRTA technique as a good alternative method for teaching reading. However, it aids students' reading ability and comprehension by making texts easier to understand, making students more interactive, and encouraging students to engage in more active and critical thinking.

Abstract

The low level of mathematical problem-solving ability among elementary school students remains a challenge in mathematics learning, particularly in students’ ability to plan strategies, carry out solution steps, and review their answers. This study aimed to describe and analyze students’ mathematical problem-solving abilities based on George Polya’s stages in mathematics learning for fourth-grade students at SD Negeri 25 Banda Aceh. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach. The research subjects consisted of five students selected purposively. Data were collected through problem-solving tests and interviews, while data analysis included data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing based on the indicators of each problem-solving stage, namely understanding the problem, planning the solution, carrying out the plan, and looking back. The results showed that, in general, students were able to understand the given problems, but they still experienced difficulties in planning and carrying out solution steps systematically. In addition, the looking back stage had not been carried out optimally by most students. Overall, students’ mathematical problem-solving ability was categorized as moderate. This category indicates that students were able to fulfill some of the problem-solving indicators, but had not demonstrated consistent and optimal performance across all stages. Specifically, two students were able to complete all stages, one student experienced difficulties at the planning and implementation stages, while the other two students experienced difficulties at the planning, implementation, and looking back stages. These findings indicate the need to strengthen the planning, implementation, and reflection stages in the learning process so that students’ mathematical problem-solving abilities can develop optimally. Abstract

Intensive reading is a fundamental skill fourth-grade students must master in Indonesian language learning, as it requires an in-depth understanding of a text's meaning rather than mere word recitation. However, field observations at MIT Meunara Baro show that students' intensive reading ability remains low, with most students' scores falling below the minimum mastery criterion (KKM). This problem is presumably caused by instruction that remains conventional, in which teachers simply hand out a reading text and have students directly answer questions without a systematic reading process, leaving students passive and under-trained in constructing deep meaning from texts. This gap between the demands of intensive reading competence and actual conditions in the field is what underlies the need for an alternative learning model. This study examined the effect of the SQ3R (Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Review) model combined with the Word Square game on intensive reading ability, using a quasi-experimental Nonequivalent Control Group Design (experimental n = 11; control n = 13). The Welch t-test showed the experimental group's posttest mean (88.18) was higher than the control group's (43.46), Sig. (2-tailed) < 0.001, with a very large effect size (Cohen's d = 4.60), confirming a significant effect.
