Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a multifactorial chronic metabolic disorder characterized by increased blood glucose levels due to insufficient insulin production. One of the plants that can be used to reduce blood sugar levels is keduduk leaves (Melastoma malabathricum L.). This study aims to determine the potential of keduduk leaf extract in reducing blood sugar levels in male white rats (Rattus norvegicus) with complications of kidney dysfunction. Methods This study is an experimental study in which rats were induced diabetes using alloxan dose 150 mg/kgBB for 3 days and kidney dysfunction with gentamicin dose 80 mg/kgBB for 7 days. Data were analyzed using Two Way Anova followed by Duncan test. The results showed that the administration of keduduk leaf extract at a dose of 400 mg/kgBB most significantly reduced blood sugar levels in male white rats with complications of kidney dysfunction. The results of creatinine examination after being given the extract showed that there was an effect of kidney complications on the decrease in blood sugar levels in rats, where the decrease in blood sugar levels in the diabetes group with kidney dysfunction complications was smaller than the diabetes group without complications. Keduduk leaf extract can potentially affect kidney function and has adverse side effects, especially on damaged kidney function. Abstract

Abstract

Cellulite is considered a skin condition associated with aging appearance due to the accumulation of fat deposits beneath the skin. The use of natural-based skincare products, such as pineapple peel extract containing active compounds, offers an alternative solution for reducing cellulite. Pineapple peel contains beneficial bioactive compounds, including flavonoids, tannins, saponins, bromelain enzymes, and secondary metabolites such as quercetin, which act as lipolytic agents. This study aimed to determine the effect of varying concentrations of pineapple peel extract gel and chitosan nanoparticle–based pineapple peel extract gel on their anti-cellulite effectiveness and to identify the gel formulation that meets good physical quality requirements. The research employed an experimental method, beginning with sample collection, determination, simplicia preparation, extraction using maceration, phytochemical screening, nanoparticle solution formulation, and gel formulation with various concentrations (F0 0%, F1 2.5%, F2 5%, F3 2.5%, and F4 5%). The gel formulations were evaluated for their physical properties, including organoleptic characteristics, homogeneity, pH, spreadability, adhesiveness, and stability, followed by a histopathological test on the skin. The results show that all gel formulations exhibit physical characteristics that meet standard quality requirements. The variation in gel concentration influences the histopathological outcomes in female dyslipidemic white rats with cellulite, where an increased concentration of chitosan nanoparticle gel up to 5% significantly reduces the number of fat cells and improves skin tissue structure.

Abstract

Background of study: Diabetes is caused by metabolic disorders that result in high blood glucose levels due to insulin deficiency and insulin resistance. This disease can trigger serious psychological, social, and physical problems and increase the risk of kidney and liver disease. Insulin resistance exacerbates liver damage through hyperinsulinemia and oxidative stress, which also affects kidney function. Research on acarbose suggests its potential to reduce diabetes complications, including liver and kidney dysfunction.Aims and scope of paper: This study aims to determine the effect of acarbose on blood glucose levels in diabetic rats with induced liver and kidney dysfunction using an in vivo experimental model. Methods: This study is an in vivo experiment using a male white rat (Rattus norvegicus) as a subject. The study began with acclimatization of mice, followed by induction with aloxan, CCl4, and gentamicin, and observation for 7 days. After that, the mice were given acarbose suspension according to the test group, and blood samples were analyzed.Result: The results showed that acarbose was effective in lowering blood sugar levels in diabetic and liver-dysfunction mice, but had no effect in kidney-dysfunction mice because there was no kidney damage. Conclusion: acarbose significantly lowered blood sugar levels in mice with diabetes and liver dysfunction, but not in those with kidney dysfunction.
