Abstract

Child malnutrition can happen because of lack of nutrition during pregnancy. Malnutrition can cause low birth weight in babies. This can cause jaw and alveolar bone abnormalities that can lead to malocclusion, periodontitis, and others. This condition can affect bone cells, such as osteoblast and osteoclast. Vitamin D3 supplementation accompanied by protein realimentation may promote optimum bone growth. This research aims to investigate the effect of protein realimentation and vitamin D3 on osteoblast and osteoclast of malnourished rat pups’ maxilla. In this research, the rat pups were divided into 5 groups: a positive control group (K+), a negative control group (K-), and 3 treatment groups (P1, P2, and P3). The subjects of this research were 10 male and 30 female Wistar rats. A condition of malnutrition was induced in the rat pups and they were given vitamin D3 supplementation with protein realimentation. Rat pups in each group were euthanized on the 22nd day to observe the number of osteoclast and osteoblast in the maxilla. The results showed that the number of osteoblasts between normal and malnourished rats was significantly different (p value < 0.05), but the number of osteoclasts between rats in the control and treatment groups was not significantly different. Administration of vitamin D3 may affect the number of osteoblasts and may not affect the number of osteoclasts on bone. The effective dose of vitamin D3 is 0.36 IU/day.

Abstract

Background: Salivary pH can rise or fall influenced by intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Sleep deprivation is one example of intrinsic factors. Sleep deprivation causes a reduction in sleep time at a certain time. Purpose: Analyze the effect of different types of sleep deprivations and sleep recovery on salivary pH. Method: This study was experimental research with a post-test only with a control group design. Thirty white Wistar strain rats were randomly divided into 5 groups: healthy control group (KI), partial sleep deprivation (PSD/KII), total sleep deprivation (TSD/KIII), partial sleep deprivation, and continued sleep recovery (PSD+SR/KIV) and total sleep deprivation and continued sleep recovery (TSD+SR/KV). The treatment is carried out on a single platform method. Salivary pH was measured with the help of color-coded pH strips that were given grading after the completion of sleep deprivation induction. Result: The mean decrease in salivary pH was highest in the TSD group. One Way ANOVA test showed significant differences (p <0.05) in the control group with PSD and TSD, the PSD group with PSD+SR, TSD group with PSD+SR and TSD+SR. Conclusion: Sleep deprivation is proven to reduce the pH of Saliva. Total sleep deprivation is a chronic condition that has the most influence on decreasing salivary pH. The effect of decreasing salivary pH due to sleep deprivation is proven to be overcome by sleep recovery.

Abstract

Background: Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma (OSCC) is highly invasive neoplasm of oral epithelial tissue that is moderately differentiated and tends to metastasize rapidly. Capsaicin, a pungent phytochemical in red peppers, exhibits both anti-proliferative and potential pro-cancer effects on human cancer cell lines. Purpose: Determine the proliferation and apoptosis between five groups of rats induced OSCC. Method: 5 groups of treatment; C- (untreated rats), C+ (induced by DMBA), E1 (exposed to DMBA and given cisplatin), E2 (induced by DMBA and Capsaicin extract nanoparticle gel with 1% concentration), and E3 (induced by DMBA and Capsaicin extract nanoparticle gel with a concentration of 3.3%). Maceration method was used to obtain Capsaicin extract from green cayenne pepper, then made into nanoparticle gel. Tissue samples were taken after the treatment was completed, then they were pathologicallyobserved histopathological using IHC to assess apoptic activity via the TUNEL method and proliferative activity using PCNA. Result: The proliferative activity in the E1 group had a significant difference compared to the E2 and E3 groups. E2 and E3 were not significantly different (p-value ≥0.05). Apoptotic activity in Group E1 indicated a significant difference from the E2 group and was not significantly different from the E3 group, whereas the E2 and E3 groups were significantly different from each other (p-value ≤0.05). Conclusion: The research showed that Capsaicin nanoparticle gel increased apoptotic activity while decreasing proliferative activity in different treatment groups of the OSCC rat model.

Abstract

Heat-cured acrylic resin is one of the materials used in making denture bases which has the disadvantage that it easily absorbs water and can make discoloration. Papaya leaves (C. papaya L) contain phenolic compounds (C6H6OH-) which can affect the color change of heat-cured acrylic resin. The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of various concentrations of papaya extract on discoloration of the heat-cured acrylic resin denture base. This experimental research is done in vitro at a laboratory using papaya leaf extract (C. papaya L) concentrations of 5%, 10%, and 20%. Thirty two samples of acrylic resin plates were divided into 4 groups, namely the immersion treatment group in papaya leaf extract concentrations of 5%, 10%, and 20%, and the negative control group in the form of aquadest soaking. The color change test was carried out using a UV-visible spectrophotometer. Data was analyzed using the One-Way ANOVA followed by Post-Hoc LSD test. The results of the study showed that there was a very significant difference in the mean value of color change between the treatment groups soaking in papaya leaf extract at concentrations of 10% and 20% and the control group, while at 5% concentration there was no significant difference from the control group. The lowest mean absorbance value was in the distilled water immersion group of 3.341350 ± 0.0942091 and the highest mean absorbance value was in the 20% immersion group of 3.553638 ± 0.0227829. This study concluded that there is an effect of various concentrations of papaya leaf extract on discoloration of the heat-cured acrylic resin denture base. Keywords: Carica papaya L, discoloration, acrylic resin, denture base.
