Abstract

Right-sided abdominal pain caused by gallbladder inflammation (cholecystitis) is a common clinical condition that can significantly affect patients’ quality of life. Conventional management generally focuses on pharmacological therapy and surgical intervention, but these approaches may present limitations such as adverse effects and high medical costs. Therefore, complementary therapeutic approaches such as acupuncture have gained increasing attention as potential supportive treatments. This study aimed to describe the implementation and clinical outcomes of acupuncture care in reducing right-sided abdominal pain in a patient with cholecystitis treated at a therapy center in Banjarmasin. The research employed a qualitative case study design involving a 45-year-old female patient diagnosed with cholecystitis. Data were collected using a structured client data sheet based on the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) diagnostic framework, including observation (Wang), listening and smelling (Wen), inquiry (Wen), and palpation (Qie). The participant received six acupuncture therapy sessions over a one-week period. Data analysis was conducted descriptively by comparing clinical findings before and after treatment. The results showed significant improvement in both subjective complaints and objective clinical indicators. The patient initially presented with severe right upper abdominal pain accompanied by nausea, decreased appetite, bitter taste in the mouth, and radiating pain to the scapula. After six therapy sessions, the main complaint of abdominal pain disappeared, accompanying symptoms decreased markedly, and physical examination findings improved. Ultrasonography also indicated the disappearance of previously detected gallstones. These findings suggest that acupuncture therapy may contribute to symptom reduction and functional improvement in patients with cholecystitis.

Abstract

Plantar fasciitis is a common musculoskeletal disorder characterized by degeneration of the plantar fascia due to repetitive mechanical stress that causes microtears, tissue irritation, and persistent heel pain, which can significantly impair daily activities and quality of life. Although conventional treatments are widely used, acupuncture has increasingly been explored as a complementary therapy for pain management. This study aimed to describe the implementation of acupuncture care for a patient with plantar fasciitis at the Bumi Sehat Acupuncture Clinic in Ubud, Gianyar, Bali. A qualitative case study design was applied to document the clinical management process of acupuncture treatment. The study involved a 55-year-old male patient who underwent six acupuncture treatment sessions during April 2025. Data were collected through the traditional four diagnostic methods of Traditional Chinese Medicine, including observation, listening and smelling, inquiry, and palpation, and were recorded using a structured client data sheet. The patient was diagnosed with plantar fasciitis associated with Cold-Bi syndrome. The therapeutic approach included acupuncture point stimulation combined with moxibustion to remove meridian obstruction, warm the channels, and promote the circulation of Qi and blood. Clinical evaluation across treatment sessions demonstrated progressive improvement in symptoms, including a gradual reduction in plantar pain, decreased heel elevation during walking, improved functional mobility, and resolution of calf stiffness and sleep disturbance. By the fifth treatment session, the patient reported complete relief from pain and regained normal walking ability, which was maintained at the sixth session without recurrence. These findings suggest that structured acupuncture care may contribute to pain reduction and functional recovery in patients with plantar fasciitis. The study provides clinical insight into the application of acupuncture as a complementary therapeutic option in the management of plantar fasciitis.

Abstract

Low blood pressure (hypotension) is a condition in which blood pressure is lower than 90/60 mmHg or low enough to cause symptoms such as dizziness and fainting. Acupuncture therapy offers an approach to addressing low blood pressure or hypotension without the side effects of pharmaceutical blood-pressure-raising medications. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of acupuncture treatment for hypotension patients at Bale Terapi Datu (TCM Center NTB) in West Lombok Regency. This single case study involved eight therapy sessions with a 31-year-old female participant who had been experiencing hypotension for the past two weeks. Data collection included observation, interviews, hearing, smell, and touch, following Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) diagnostic standards. Acupuncture points were chosen based on a diagnosis of qi and xue deficiency, with needle manipulation focused on tonification. After eight therapy sessions, the participant experienced significant improvement in blood pressure from 70/80 mmHg to 100/80 mmHg. Additional symptoms such as dizziness, fatigue, constipation, insomnia, loss of appetite, and restlessness have significantly decreased, and the participant’s physical condition has improved. Tongue examination revealed increased redness, and the pulse, which was initially weak, became more stable, indicating a smoother flow of liver qi and blood. The acupuncture treatment provided was effective in treating low blood pressure or hypotension caused by qi and blood deficiency by improving qi flow and increasing blood volume and circulation, thereby improving physical condition and reducing the symptoms experienced by the participant.

Abstract

Gastritis is one of the most common gastrointestinal disorders and is characterized by inflammation of the gastric mucosa that may cause symptoms such as epigastric pain, nausea, bloating, and decreased appetite. The high prevalence of gastric complaints encourages the exploration of complementary therapies that can support conventional treatment. One alternative approach is acupuncture, particularly Jin’s 3 Needle acupuncture, which aims to restore the balance of body energy and improve digestive function. This study aims to describe the implementation and therapeutic outcomes of Jin’s 3 Needle acupuncture in the management of gastritis patients at Griya Sehat Holistic Kalisari, East Jakarta. This research used a qualitative case study approach involving one gastritis patient who underwent six acupuncture therapy sessions over four weeks. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and clinical examinations including tongue and pulse diagnosis based on Traditional Chinese Medicine principles. The therapy applied several acupuncture points such as CV12, PC6, ST36, BL20, BL21, and CV4 with notification techniques and moxibustion. The findings showed gradual improvement in the patient’s symptoms after repeated therapy sessions. Complaints such as heartburn, nausea, bloating, and decreased appetite were reduced and eventually disappeared. Improvements were also observed in tongue appearance, pulse stability, and overall physical condition. These results indicate that Jin’s 3 Needle acupuncture may serve as a complementary therapy for gastritis management. The study implies that acupuncture has potential to support holistic digestive health care and may be further explored in broader clinical research.

Abstract

Adiposity is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by excessive fat accumulation and an increased risk of noncommunicable diseases. Its rising prevalence in Indonesia requires effective and safe therapeutic approaches. Acupuncture, as a complementary therapy, is considered to have potential in regulating metabolism and energy balance. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of acupuncture treatment for weight loss in adiposity patients at the Sehat “Tade” Clinic, Cilegon. The study used a qualitative approach with a case study method involving one 48-year-old female participant with a BMI of 37 kg/m². Acupuncture therapy was performed in six sessions over three weeks. Data were obtained through the four Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) examination methods: observation (Wang), listening and smelling (Wen), inquiry (Wen), and palpation (Qie). Effectiveness was assessed based on a comparison of pre- and post-intervention conditions, including weight loss, changes in BMI, clinical complaints, and TCM examination results. After six therapy sessions, there was weight loss and improvement in clinical complaints such as low back pain and headache. TCM examination showed improvement in tongue condition, reduced abdominal tenderness on palpation, and enhanced energy levels and emotional regulation in the patient. The participant also demonstrated positive changes in diet, rest, and physical activity. Acupuncture treatment administered in a structured and individualized manner is effective in promoting weight loss and improving clinical conditions in adiposity patients. This therapy has the potential to serve as a complementary approach in adiposity management and can be further developed through studies with a larger number of participants.

Abstract

This study explores the effectiveness of acupuncture therapy in reducing anxiety symptoms accompanied by insomnia, a condition that has become increasingly prevalent globally and in Indonesia. Anxiety disorders significantly affect individuals’ quality of life, while limitations in conventional treatments and mental health services highlight the need for complementary therapeutic approaches. Therefore, this research aims to evaluate the benefits of acupuncture care in alleviating anxiety and improving sleep quality in patients. The study employed a qualitative case study design involving one adult female participant undergoing six sessions of acupuncture therapy over two weeks at Flowers Beauty Studio Bandung. Data were collected through observation, structured interviews, clinical examination based on Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) principles, and documentation. The therapy focused on balancing Yin deficiency and regulating Liver Qi stagnation through specific acupuncture points. The findings indicate a gradual and consistent improvement in the participant’s condition, including reduced anxiety levels, improved sleep duration and quality, decreased panic symptoms, and enhanced overall well-being. Clinical indicators such as pulse, tongue condition, and emotional stability also showed positive changes across therapy sessions. In conclusion, acupuncture therapy demonstrates effectiveness as a complementary and low-risk intervention for managing anxiety with insomnia. This approach contributes to restoring physical and emotional balance and offers a promising alternative for holistic mental health care.

Abstract

Myalgia is a common musculoskeletal disorder characterized by muscle pain and discomfort, often caused by excessive activity, poor posture, or stress. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), acupuncture is used to regulate Qi and Xue flow to relieve pain and improve body function. This research aims to determine the benefits of acupuncture care in overcoming pain in the shoulder and neck area in myalgia patients at the Iryas Cisauk Health Clinic. This research used a qualitative descriptive design with a case study approach in one myalgia patient. Data collection was carried out through anamnesis, physical examination, and examinations based on TCM principles such as pulse and tongue examinations. Pain intensity was measured using the Numerical Rating Scale (NRS). Acupuncture therapy is administered during eight sessions of visits, and evaluations are carried out at each session to see the progression of the patient's condition. The results showed significant improvement after acupuncture therapy. The patient's pain scale decreased from NRS 6 to 0–1 after eight therapy sessions. In addition, there is an increase in the range of motion in the neck and shoulders, a reduction in pain points, and an improvement in daily activities and the quality of sleep of patients. Acupuncture care provided in a structured manner based on the diagnosis of TCM syndrome is effective in reducing myalgia pain, improving movement function, and helping the patient's condition recover. Acupuncture therapy can be a safe and beneficial alternative to non-pharmacological therapy in the treatment of musculoskeletal pain.
