Abstract

Transactional sex has been recognized as a significant element hindering the reduction of drug usage in Papua, Indonesia. The national objective for drug usage reduction was established at 1.67% for 2024; nevertheless, this target remains unfulfilled. This research investigated the correlation between transactional sex and substance abuse among female and adolescent prisoners in Papua Province. A case-control approach was utilized, employing primary data gathered from May to September 2023 at the Special Correctional Institution for Juveniles (LPKA) and the Women’s Correctional Institution (LPP) in Papua. The research population consisted of 85 offenders incarcerated from 2021 to 2023. A total of 26 cases (drug users) and 59 controls (non-users) were included using total sampling, in a 1:2 ratio. Data were gathered using a modified version of the Rapid Survey Questionnaire on Injecting Drug User Behavior (SCP Penasun). Analysis was conducted using STATA version 14, employing multivariate logistic regression to identify related factors. In all, 30.6% of participants were identified as drug users according to case-control selection, rather than as an estimation of population-level prevalence. Inmates who indicated participation in transactional sex exhibited increased odds of drug acquisition (adjusted OR: 1.59; 95% CI: 0.46–5.39) after controlling for work status, past-year drug usage, and duration of use. The findings suggest a possible trend of heightened drug acquisition among inmates engaged in transactional sex, although the correlation remains ambiguous. Consequently, integrated therapies targeting both substance use and sexual risk behaviors are crucial in custodial environments.

Abstract

Background: The nutritional status of elementary school children is an important indicator of health and human resource capacity. Baseline data are needed prior to the implementation of the Free Nutritious Meal Program (MBG), particularly in border areas facing limited food access, logistical distribution challenges, and socio-economic disparities compared to urban regions. Such data are also relevant to support national policies on stunting reduction and the MBG program as a government strategy to improve child nutrition. Objectives: To describe the nutritional status of students at SD Negeri Skouw Sae and analyze its association with sex, age, ethnicity, recent illness, and parental occupation, while providing baseline data for evaluating the effectiveness of the MBG program in border areas. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 121 active students. Inclusion criteria were all actively enrolled students, while exclusion criteria included children with chronic diseases that might affect anthropometric measurements. Nutritional status was assessed using Body Mass Index-for-Age (BMI-for-Age) based on WHO 2007 standards. This indicator was chosen because it is practical for school-based surveillance, reliable for assessing school-age children’s nutrition, and internationally recommended as a primary parameter for nutrition monitoring. Data were analyzed using the Chi-square test with a significance level of α=0,05 in SPSS version 22.Results: Most students (89,3%) had good nutritional status, while 10,7% were classified as undernourished. Bivariate analysis with the Chi-square test did not reveal significant associations between nutritional status and sex, age, ethnicity, parental occupation, or recent illness. These findings are descriptive and should be interpreted with caution, as the analysis did not control for covariates. Conclusion: The majority of students at SD Negeri Skouw Sae had good nutritional status (89,3%) prior to the implementation of the MBG program. No significant associations were found between nutritional status and demographic factors (sex, age, ethnicity, parental occupation) or short-term health factors (recent illness). These descriptive findings provide important baseline data for monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of the MBG program in border areas of Papua and highlight the need for further studies considering dietary intake and school environment factors.

Abstract

Background: Obesity is a growing health problem, including among university students. The Indonesian government, through the Healthy Living Community Movement (GERMAS), promotes healthy lifestyles as a preventative measure against non-communicable diseases, including obesity. This study aims to determine the relationship between physical activity, fruit and vegetable consumption, and the incidence of obesity among university students in Papua Province. Methods: This study used a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design. The respondents were 127 university students studying in Jayapura City, selected using proportionate stratified random sampling. Data were collected using questionnaires and Body Mass Index (BMI) measurements, and analyzed using the Chi-Square test. Results: The results of the study showed a significant relationship between physical activity (p = 0.028, < 0.05) with a relative risk (RP) value of 3.119, and fruit and vegetable consumption (p = 0.005, < 0.05) with an RP value of 3.160, in relation to obesity. Activities within the Healthy Living Community Movement are mandatory for students as a form of prevention against non-communicable diseases. The movement, which encourages physical activity and the consumption of fruits and vegetables, should be implemented as a regular program at both public and private universities in Papua Province. University leaders in charge of student affairs are required to allocate regular funds to support this initiative.

This condition is further influenced by the limited availability of engaging nutrition education and the suboptimal utilization of local food resources as sources of adequate nutrition. This community service program aimed to enhance nutrition literacy and awareness of local food consumption through the implementation of the “Isi Piringku” educational approach among elementary school students in a border region of the Indonesia–Papua New Guinea border regions. The program involved 50 students from grades IV–VI and was delivered through interactive counseling sessions, animated educational videos, and local food–based educational games. Program effectiveness was evaluated using a one-group pre-test and post-test design with a 20-item multiple-choice questionnaire. Data were analyzed using a paired sample t-test. The indicators of success were determined based on an increase in the mean knowledge score and statistical significance at p < 0.001 (α = 0.05). The results demonstrated a significant improvement in students’ mean knowledge scores from 68.1% to 86.5%, reflecting an 18.4% increase (p < 0.001), as well as enhanced understanding of balanced nutrition concepts and greater recognition of local food sources such as sago, fish, and green vegetables. Active participation and enthusiasm were observed throughout the program. This initiative contributes to strengthening nutrition literacy among elementary school students through a contextual and school-based educational approach.

Abstract

High blood sugar levels are a sign of impaired metabolism in the body. High blood sugar levels with clinical symptoms are the cause of type 2 diabetes mellitus. The aim of the study was to determine the risk factors for blood sugar levels based on community participation through early detection and monitoring of the main risk factors for non-communicable diseases at POSBINDU in the city of Yogyakarta. Data were obtained from the Non-Communicable Disease Information System (NCD-IS) of the Yogyakarta City Health Office in January - June 2022. The study was conducted with a case-control study (cases to controls ratio 1:2) with matched by sex and age group. Cases are people who have blood sugar levels ≥200 mg/dL as many as 169 people. Controls were people with blood sugar levels <200 mg/dL, with a total of 338 people. The analytical test used was the Chi-square test. Physical activity was significantly associated (p-value 0.009; 95% CI 0.55 – 0.91). There is a relationship between lack of physical activity and with the incidence of abnormal blood sugar levels. Lack of physical activity affects blood sugar levels to be abnormal.
