Abstract

The phenomenon of self-reward is increasingly popular among young people, including prospective catechists, as a response to personal achievements. However, this practice has the potential to lead to a consumptive lifestyle that neglects spiritual values. Christian education plays an important role in shaping the self-control of prospective catechists to manage self-reward wisely, thus preventing disruption to their spiritual balance. The purpose of this study is to explore how Christian education can develop self-control in dealing with the self-reward phenomenon. This study employs a qualitative approach with literature review methods and in-depth interviews with prospective catechists actively involved in church education. The results show that prospective catechists who receive Christian education focused on character and spiritual development are better able to distinguish between genuine spiritual needs and temporary worldly desires. Christian education plays a key role in teaching self-control that strikes a balance between personal satisfaction and spiritual goals. In conclusion, self-control taught in Christian education can help prospective catechists face the temptation of a consumptive lifestyle and become life examples that better align with Christ’s teachings.

Abstract

Catechesis is a process of faith formation that aims to help the faithful, especially Catholic youth, to know, internalize, and live out the Christian faith in their daily lives. In the digital era, youth participation in ecclesial life tends to decline, as indicated by low involvement in Church activities. This condition is influenced by various factors, such as academic and work commitments, as well as the dominance of digital culture, which is often more appealing to young people than spiritual activities. This study aims to analyze the role of catechesis in increasing the participation of Catholic youth in the digital era and to examine the relevance of retreats and recollections as contextual forms of catechesis. The research employs a qualitative approach using a literature study method, supported by observations of ecclesial life at the station level. The findings indicate that catechesis that is primarily informative is less effective in addressing the needs of young people, who seek a more personal and participatory faith experience. In this regard, retreats and recollections have the potential to serve as forms of catechesis that deepen faith experiences and encourage active participation in the life of the Church.

Abstract

The development of digital technology has brought about significant changes in various aspects of life, including early childhood faith education. Today’s children are growing up in an environment familiar with digital media, making it necessary to adopt a catechetical approach that keeps pace with the times. This article aims to examine the use of digital catechesis as a tool for early childhood faith education. This study employs a qualitative method with a literature review approach, gathering data from books, scientific journals, research articles, Church documents, and other relevant sources. The data is analyzed using descriptive-qualitative methods to understand the benefits, challenges, and role of digital catechesis in fostering children’s faith. Research findings indicate that digital catechesis can serve as an effective, engaging, and interactive medium for helping children learn about the teachings of the faith from an early age. The use of animated videos, religious songs, educational images, and learning apps can enhance children’s interest in learning, attention, and understanding of Catholic faith values. Furthermore, digital catechesis also assists the Church, families, and schools in providing faith education that is more contextual and aligned with the world of today’s children. However, the use of digital media still requires the guidance of parents, teachers, and faith mentors so that children receive proper direction and are protected from the negative impacts of technology. Thus, digital catechesis is a relevant tool in the faith education of young children when used wisely and purposefully. The presence of digital media does not replace the role of faith educators but serves as a tool that enriches the process of proclaiming the faith in the modern era.

Abstract

The development of digital media has brought significant changes to social and religious life, including the practice of catechesis. One phenomenon emerging from the digital environment is the echo chamber, a condition in which individuals are predominantly exposed to information, opinions, and perspectives that align with their existing beliefs. This phenomenon can limit critical thinking, strengthen prejudices, reduce openness to different viewpoints, and hinder constructive dialogue. As a result, the digital space may become a place of polarization rather than mutual understanding. This article aims to examine the phenomenon of echo chambers in relation to the spirituality of catechetical dialogue in the light of Pope Francis’ Fratelli Tutti. Through a qualitative and theological reflection, the study highlights the relevance of dialogue spirituality as a means of fostering openness, mutual listening, respect, and fraternity amid diversity. Pope Francis emphasizes that authentic dialogue enables individuals to encounter others, appreciate differences, and seek the common good together. Therefore, digital catechesis should not merely function as a medium for transmitting religious content but also as an inclusive and transformative space for dialogue. In this way, catechesis in the digital era can help believers develop critical awareness, openness to diversity, and a stronger commitment to building a culture of encounter and solidarity.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the role of literary catechesis in helping believers, especially young people, to understand and live out the Word of God in their daily lives. The background of this research is rooted in the rapid development of technology and the flow of information, which significantly influence how young people perceive and experience their faith. In this context, catechesis is often still conducted in a one-way manner and tends to lack connection with participants’ lived experiences. Therefore, a more contextual and participatory approach is needed. This research employs a literature study method by analyzing various sources, including academic journals and Church documents, particularly the Petunjuk untuk Katekese (2020). The findings show that literary catechesis is an effective approach because it places Sacred Scripture at the center of faith formation through processes of reading, understanding, and reflecting on the text. This approach enables participants not only to know the content of Scripture but also to relate it to their personal life experiences.

Abstract

The development of globalization, digital technology, and social change has influenced the way young people understand and live out their faith. Secularism tends to place religion in the private sphere, so that religious values do not always become the basis for decision-making in daily life. This study aims to analyze the challenges of secularism to the formation of the identity of Catholic youth in the modern era and to formulate relevant religious education responses in addressing these dynamics. This research uses a qualitative approach with a literature study method that examines various scientific literature, Church documents, and research findings related to the phenomenon of secularism and the formation of the religious identity of Catholic youth. The results of the study indicate that secularism has a complex impact on the faith life of young people, including decreased participation in Church activities, the emergence of individualistic attitudes, and the tendency to view religion merely as a formal identity. However, on the other hand, the modern era also opens opportunities for young people to develop their faith creatively through the use of digital technology and involvement in faith communities. Therefore, Catholic religious education and pastoral accompaniment that are dialogical, contextual, and participatory are very important in helping Catholic youth integrate their faith into daily life. This study is expected to provide theoretical and practical contributions for educators and pastoral ministers in fostering the faith identity of Catholic youth in modern society.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the role of catechesis in proclaiming the Gospel amidst the religious and cultural diversity of Indonesian society. The background of this study stems from the reality of pluralism, which is both a source of richness and a challenge in social and religious life, often giving rise to potential conflicts, prejudices, and exclusive attitudes. Therefore, an approach to faith formation is needed that not only focuses on doctrinal teaching but is also capable of fostering a dialogical, tolerant, and open attitude. This study employs a qualitative method using a literature review approach through the analysis of various theological literature, scholarly articles, and relevant Church documents. The research findings indicate that catechesis plays a strategic role as a means of contextual Gospel proclamation, particularly through dialogical and inculturative approaches. Catechesis not only helps the faithful understand the teachings of the faith more deeply but also encourages them to live out and implement Gospel values in daily life within a multicultural society. Furthermore, a dialogical approach to catechesis fosters harmonious interfaith relations through mutual respect, open communication, and cooperation in social life. The inculturative approach in catechesis has also proven effective in bridging faith and culture, ensuring that the Gospel message is received without eroding local cultural identity. The implications of this research emphasize.

Abstract

This article, The development of digital technology has brought about significant changes in human life, including in the way we communicate, obtain information, and live our lives of faith. The emergence of the digital generation, particularly Generation Z, demands that the Church adapt its faith education model to remain relevant to the times. This article aims to reflect on the influence of the digital generation on faith education and analyze the challenges and opportunities for catechesis in the era of technological disruption. This research uses a qualitative approach with a library research method, namely through the review of various scientific literature, journals, and Church documents related to the digital generation, faith education, and catechesis. The results of the discussion indicate that digital culture presents challenges in the form of an instant culture, unverified information flows, individualism, and a decline in the depth of spiritual reflection. However, digital technology also opens up significant opportunities for the Church to implement catechesis more broadly, creatively, interactively, and easily accessible through social media, podcasts, online videos, and digital communities. Therefore, the Church needs to renew its catechesis model through a dialogical, participatory, and contextual approach without changing the content of faith teachings. Digital catechesis should continue to direct people to a real encounter with God, others, and the Church community. Thus, the digital generation is a new opportunity for the Church to proclaim the Gospel amidst changing times.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the role of digital catechesis in fostering a spirit of tolerance among Generation Z within the context of social media culture. The method used is a literature review with a descriptive qualitative approach through the analysis of various relevant sources, including Church documents and other scholarly works. The findings indicate that the development of digital technology has transformed the way the Church carries out its mission of evangelization, making digital catechesis an effective, contextual, and accessible medium for young people. Generation Z, as digital natives, has a strong attachment to social media, which functions not only as a communication tool but also as a space for identity formation and understanding diversity. Social media provides opportunities to cultivate tolerance through interactions across cultures, religions, and perspectives, but it also presents challenges such as the spread of misinformation, hate speech, and intolerance. In this context, digital catechesis plays an important role in instilling Christian values such as love, respect for differences, and critical thinking skills. Therefore, digital catechesis becomes a strategic means of forming young people who are faithful, wise, tolerant, and able to live harmoniously.

Abstract

The development of digital culture has significantly changed the communication, relationships, and spirituality of the younger generation, requiring the Church to reconsider its catechetical methods in the context of social media. This article aims to analyze digital catechesis as a space where faith can develop for the younger generation, by examining the theological foundations, the dynamics of digital culture, and the challenges and models for its development. This study adopts a literature review method by conducting a systematic review of Church Magisterial documents, theological works, and academic research related to the religiosity of the younger generation in the digital environment. The research findings indicate that social media can become a place of faith encounter if catechesis focuses not only on the delivery of religious content but also offers a relational experience that is dialogical, participatory, and community-oriented. However, there are serious challenges such as the risk of superficiality, spiritual consumption, the dominance of algorithms, the commodification of religious content, and the issue of doctrinal authority in the digital space. Therefore, the development of digital catechesis must be based on Christocentrism, fidelity to Church teaching, and a combination of online guidance and concrete sacramental life. With an approach that takes context and reflection into account, digital catechesis has the potential to be a significant and transformative tool of evangelization for young people in the evolving culture of social media.
