Abstract

The paper addresses the use of video in listening comprehension test. There are still debates on this medium though all strongly believe that bringing real life communication into a language education is one succeeding indicator to accelerate positive development of language learners. The method used is test usefulness as a synthesis conceptual framework to determine validity, reliability, practicality, authenticity, ethics and professionalization related to the test. There is no final answer through this paper in deciding whether this multimedia is the best way to capture language features and to assess test-takers ability. Nevertheless, at least, this paper examines the medium and brings up some aspects considered for better language testing and assessment method in future.

Abstract

Rendahnya keterampilan membaca harus diatasi agar siswa tidak mengalami kesulitan dalam hal membaca. Upaya yang dilakukan untuk mengatasi permasalahan membaca permulaan siswa kelas I SD adalah denga menggunakan media pembelajaran big book. Penelitan ini bertujuan ingin mengetahui: (1) proses penggunaan big book dalam pembelajaran membaca permulaan. (2) hasil belajar siswa dengan menggunakan big book dalam kegiatan membaca permulaan di SDN 51 Banda Aceh. Pendekatan dalam penelitian ini adalah kualitatif dengan jenis penelitian deskriptif. Subjek siswa kelas I SDN 51 Banda Aceh yang berjumlah 28 orang. Teknik pengumpulan data berupa tes dan observasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan rata-rata nilai pre tes yang diperoleh siswa adalah 71,79. Setelah diterapkan media big book pada kegiatan membaca permulaan nilai rata-rata meningkat menjadi lebih baik yaitu 79,28. Dengan demikian dapat disimpulkan bahwa penggunaan media big book terhadap kemampuan membaca permulaan siswa kelas I SDN 51 Banda Aceh

Abstract

Happiness is an important aspect of life that is closely related to mental and emotional well-being. Orphaned adolescents can face more difficulties in achieving happiness. This study aims to explore the meaning of happiness in orphaned adolescents. This research uses a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling with the number of respondents five orphaned teenagers with age criteria between 12-20 years who lost both parents due to death. Data collection was carried out through interviews and observations and then the results obtained were analyzed using Braun and Clarkes thematic analysis. The findings of this study reveal that happiness in orphaned adolescents is closely related to social support and spiritual meaning. This study emphasizes the importance of programs that enhance social support and spiritual development, as well as greater psychological support and understanding of happiness from the perspective of the orphans themselves.Kebahagiaan merupakan aspek penting dalam hidup yang terkait erat dengan kesejahteraan mental dan emosional. Remaja yatim piatu dapat menghadapi lebih banyak kesulitan dalam mencapai kebahagiaan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menggali makna kebahagiaan pada remaja yatim piatu. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan pendekatan fenomenologi. Teknik sampling yang digunakan adalah purposive sampling dengan jumlah responden lima orang remaja yatim piatu dengan kriteria usia antara 12-20 tahun yang kehilangan kedua orang tua karena meninggal dunia. Pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui wawancara dan observasi lalu hasil yang diperoleh dianalisis menggunakan analisis tematik Braun dan Clarke. Temuan penelitian ini mengungkapkan bahwa kebahagiaan pada remaja yatim piatu sangat berkaitan erat dengan dukungan sosial dan makna spiritual. Penelitian ini menekankan pentingnya program yang meningkatkan dukungan sosial dan pengembangan spiritual, serta dukungan psikologis yang lebih besar dan pemahaman kebahagiaan dari perspektif anak yatim piatu itu sendiri.

Abstract

Culture shock has gained attention and been observed from multi-disciplinary perspectives in international education, such as from anthropology, psychology, cultural psychology, intercultural communication studies, linguistics, and many others. By synthesising the ABCs theory and intercultural communicative competence with their savoirs, the present study offers a perspective to analyse three international students culture shock experiences. As an explorative case study, the data were collected through in-depth interviews to extract the sojourners narratives, which were then transcribed in the form of text or quotations. It was found that the affective, behavioural, and cognitive dimensions were identified and emerged in each respondent. In the affective, overwhelming emotions, language limitation, and feelings of isolation were felt in various intensities. From the data, the respondents claimed to have lacked intrapersonal skills to prepare themselves for the culture of the host country along with the socio-cultural aspects. In addition, they found social support by individuals or officials essential for reducing negative feelings. In the behavioural dimension, these respondents started to adapt to the situation though they still found it challenging to confirm and clarify any unfamiliar encounters. Finally, in the cognitive dimension, the respondents mingled and integrated into the locals, both in their academic and social lives. It is suggested that elements of intercultural communicative competence, namely intercultural attitude, knowledge of the host culture, skills of relating and discovery, and critical cultural awareness may have the potential to manage culture shock effectively. It should be incorporated into international higher education and EFL pedagogy.

Abstract

This study seeks to evaluate the impact of YouTube videos incorporating an immersive learning strategy on the speaking performance of young learners. It is designed as a quantitative research project. The participants consist of all fifth-grade students at Islamic Primary School 6 Banda Aceh during the 2023/2024 academic year, totaling 40 students—20 engaged in pair learning and 20 in individual learning. A random sampling method was implemented using Google Forms. Data collection involved an oral pre-test and post-test or interview as the primary instrument. The data were analyzed statistically with the Wilcoxon signed-rank test to determine the p-value for four speaking skills. The results revealed a sig 2-tailed value of 0.000 for all four items, falling below the 0.05 significance level. This indicates that YouTube videos with an immersive learning strategy significantly influenced the speaking performance of young learners, particularly in expressing personal needs. These findings carry pedagogical implications for EFL teachers, encouraging the use of YouTube videos to improve students’ speaking abilities. The results can guide teachers and curriculum designers in choosing and organizing learning activities to optimize language development outcomes through a student-centered approach.

Abstract

Since Intercultural Communicative Competence was introduced, there have been multiple studies conducted to do research on how the competence can potentially improve not only students’ knowledge and skills at using the foreign language, but also students’ attitudinal development towards the culture of the foreign language. The present study focuses on the ways of how the competence has been realized and taught at Indonesian universities with varied course names in the context of English as a Foreign Language (EFL). Via a qualitative multiple case studies, forty-two students’ responses towards activities and personal changes after attending the course were elicited through interview surveys. The iterative data analyses involved data condensation, data display, data verification and conclusion. It can be found from the data that cultural sharing with discussion and presentation has been prevalent at the classroom activities despite the debate of its effectiveness. It was quite striking that the students expressed their changes of attitudes towards other foreign cultures upon the engagement of the course. This study proposes the most-suited-contextualized teaching activities for the competence in Indonesian context and strives to enrich phenomena of intercultural teaching and learning in the typical EFL contexts. All of these to support that there is no one-fit-all contexts in promoting Intercultural Communicative Competence.

Abstract

Lembaga Pers Mahasiswa Cakrawala memiliki daya tarik bagi mahasiswa sehingga minat dan antusiasme mahasiswa banyak mahasiswa yang memiliki minat di bidang jurnalistik, kepenulisan, dan media, sehingga SDM untuk UKM ini cukup tersedia. Dan adanya dukungan dan keterlibatan perkembangan teknologi dan media digital kemudahan dalam menyebarluaskan berita melalui website, media sosial, dan platform digital membantu cakrawala menjangkau lebih banyak pembaca dan adapun faktor penghambat adalah perbedaan pendapat dalam pengelolaan lembaga pers dan keterbatasan fasilitas LPM Cakrawala. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian Kualitatif dengan pendekatan studi kasus. Penelitian studi kasus ini mempermudah peneliti guna mengungkap Faktor keberhasilan mengelola lembaga Pers UKM Cakrawala di Kampus UINSI Samarinda dengan secara komprehensif dan sistematis. Jenis Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan deskriptif untuk menjelaskan fenomena berdasarkan hasil yang didapatkan. Subjek penelitian merupakan pimpinan umum, dan pengurus aktif berjumlah sebanyak 2 responden menggunakan wawancara.. Teknik pengumpulan data menggunakan observasi, wawancara dan dokumentasi. Adapun hasil penelitian ini adalah bahwa ada 2 peran yang mendukung kemajuan lembaga Pers UKM Cakrawala UINSI Samarinda. Pertama peran Unit Kegiatan Mahasiswa Cakrawala untuk wadah dan menampung informasi dari mahasiswa UINSI yang selanjutnya dikelola oleh kepengurusan wartawan atau jurnalistik Lembaga Pers Mahasiswa Cakrawala untuk dijadikan berita. Kedua wadah mengembangkan kemampuan mahasiswa dalam bentuk penulisan seperti lomba membuat opini, majalah, poster dan membuat berita bidang jurnalistik. Saran dari peneliti adalah lebih luas lagi dalam membuka wadah pengembangan mahasiswa dan mengurangi miss komunikasi antar anggota dan pimpinan.
