Abstract

The inconsistency of the implementation of therapeutic communication and patient education by nurses at the Palembang Harbor Hospital is evident from patient complaints regarding unclear explanations of procedures, incomplete information, and nurse responses that are considered less empathetic, so that these conditions are suspected to affect the level of patient satisfaction and need further research to determine the extent to which therapeutic communication and education provided by nurses are related to patient satisfaction in the inpatient ward. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between therapeutic communication and the role of nurse educators with the level of patient satisfaction in the inpatient ward of the Palembang Harbor Hospital. This study used a cross-sectional approach. The sample of this study was 30 patients treated in the inpatient ward using an accidental sampling technique. Data collection used a questionnaire on therapeutic communication, the role of nurse educators and patient satisfaction. The results showed that therapeutic communication and the role of nurse educators were significantly related to patient satisfaction, indicated by a p value = 0.003 in therapeutic communication and p = 0.001 in the role of educators, with the majority of patients (76.7%) reporting high satisfaction so that the quality of communication and nurse education were the main factors determining patient satisfaction. It can be concluded that there is a significant relationship between therapeutic communication and the level of patient satisfaction and there is a significant relationship between the role of nurse educators and the level of patient satisfaction

Abstract

AbstractKnee pain or knee osteoarthritis is a chronic degenerative condition due to inflammation of the tissues around the knee. Age is the strongest predictor of knee Osteoarthritis (OA). Clinical symptoms of OA are joint stiffness, joint pain and joint dysfunction, but the main problem for most patients is pain or tenderness in the joints. Community service activities are carried out with the aim of empowering the community to reduce knee pain in osteoarthritis patients with exercise therapy in 98 elderly people with knee joint pain conditions in Palemraya Village, North Indralaya District, Ogan Ilir Regency. This counseling uses lectures, discussions and demonstrations with leaflets equipped with image descriptions of exercises to reduce complaints of knee pain which was carried out on February 8, 2025. Based on the results of activities, knee pain in the elderly was reduced with an average pain before exercise therapy of 6.09 and an average pain after exercise therapy of 3.55, with a difference in the average pain before and after exercise therapy of 2.54 using the Numerical Rating Scale.  Exercise therapy in the elderly can reduce knee pain. Keywords: knee pain; osteoarthritis; exercise therapy.

Abstract

Abstract

Introduction: Stroke survivors in low-resource settings often rely on family caregivers to provide essential daily care after hospital discharge. However, many caregivers lack the necessary knowledge, skills, and confidence to perform safe and effective home-based care. Virtual Reality (VR) offers an immersive, interactive, and practical training method that may enhance caregiver preparedness and is associated with improved patient outcomes during post-stroke recovery. This study evaluated the effectiveness of a VR-based caregiver training program on functional, psychological, physiological, and cognitive outcomes among stroke survivors. Methods: A quasi-experimental pre–post design was conducted with 60 caregiver–patient pairs recruited from a community health center in South Sumatra. Participants were assigned to either a VR-based training group or a control group receiving standard discharge education. The intervention consisted of five immersive VR modules simulating stroke-care scenarios, including hygiene, feeding, transfer techniques, positioning, suctioning, and range of motion exercises. Outcome measures included systolic blood pressure, functional independence (Barthel Index), anxiety and depression (HADS), and cognitive status (MoCA). Results: Patients whose caregivers received VR-based training demonstrated significant improvements in patient outcomes compared with the control group. The intervention group showed greater reductions in systolic blood pressure (p = 0.021), increased functional independence (p = 0.041), reduced anxiety (p = 0.017) and depression (p = 0.011), and enhanced cognitive function (p = 0.032). Effect sizes ranged from moderate to large, indicating clinically meaningful improvements. Conclusion: VR-based caregiver training is a feasible, low-cost, and effective strategy associated with improved patient outcomes following caregiver training. Its immersive design provides experiential learning that may support caregiving activities in community health settings with limited resources.
