Abstract

Environmental education (EE) is one of the content-based language learning pedagogies used to enhance students’ awareness of environmental concerns and their effect on people and animals. It aims to build the language teachers’ and students’ awareness of the importance of EE and green pedagogy in ELT. However, research into integrating EE in language education is still scarce. Therefore, this article presents an analysis of multimodal discourse of the EE imperatives in using content and language integrated learning (CLIL) strategy. Grounded in the video data analysis (VDA) approach, the researchers analysed the recorded talks of two university lecturers who offered their finest teaching approaches, and two environmentalists from “Bye-Bye Plastic Bags Jakarta” who described their significant efforts in handling plastic waste from a 2021 webinar held by the British Council Indonesia. Based on the thematic analysis, the forum suggests: 1) including environmental issues in language curriculum, syllabus, and textbook development, 2) providing environmentally-relevant materials and resources, 3) providing environmental language teacher professional development, and 4) accelerating environmental literacy programs at all levels of education. In other words, the inclusion of green pedagogy and environmental sustainability initiatives in ELT should be well-acknowledged. The methodological and pedagogical strategies in integrating environmental issues in ELT in this study addressed the high demand to catalyse language teachers’ metacognitive awareness in EE and indirectly build students’ metacognitive skills about environmental care.

Abstract

Despite the flipped learning growing popularity, empirical research to increase students' reading abilities is still lacking. The majority of research concentrates on students' impressions of the English language rather than particular language abilities. If there is, speaking, listening, and writing is dominant. This systematic literature review summarizes study findings on trends and outcomes of flipped learning-based instruction in teaching reading. The identification, screening, feasibility, and inclusion phase found thirty-one articles between 2015 and 2022 from the Scopus database with a premium Scopus account to access all sources without limits. The results showed that the research trend of flipped learning in teaching reading was less attractive to researchers than other English skills. It can be seen from the lack of publications from year to year and even tends to decline until May 2022. Further research on flipped learning in teaching reading can enrich the literature on knowledge. In addition, Flipped Learning has positive outcomes in influencing students' performance, especially if combined with other methods. For future research, several different research scopes can be considered, such as creating models or designs to apply flipped learning to students' reading performance and comprehension.

Abstract

The wide-ranging and provision of high-end technology have brought a significant impact on the world of education. Teacher and student are expected to collaborate effectively in learning process using technology. This paper reveals the investigation on student’s perception towards the implementation of Moodle-based e-learning in ELT as well as some problems encountered by the users (learners) in utilizing the platform. A mix method approach was employed using online survey and interview. Three classes consisting 62 students who have experienced a Moodle-based e-learning were engaged both in the survey and interview. The data obtained from the online survey was analyzed using a RASCH measurement analysis with IRT (Item Response Theory) approach. The result shows a positive trend on student’s perceived usefulness (PU), ease of use (EoU), behavioral intention (BoI) towards the implementation of the platform. This article also provides several suggestions for further research and development within the area of Moodle-based e-learning platform.

Abstract

This qualitative study explores the challenges faced by lecturers in implementing flipped learning in classroom settings. Through in-depth interviews and observations, the research identifies key barriers such as student preparedness, technological issues, and resistance to new pedagogical approaches. The findings reveal that while some students engage actively when they come prepared, many others struggle to see the value in pre-class materials, which affects overall class dynamics. Furthermore, the study highlights the importance of collaboration among educators, as working with experienced colleagues can provide invaluable resources and strategies to mitigate these challenges. The insights gained from this research contribute to a deeper understanding of the complexities involved in adopting flipped learning and offer practical recommendations for enhancing student engagement and improving teaching practices in higher education.

Abstract

This study investigates the ecological metaphors used in the lontar manuscript of the Megantaka folklore of the Sasak tribe in Indonesia. Using an ecolinguistic approach and referring to Halleys ecological metaphor categories, the data were collected from the Lontar manuscript and analysed using the Metaphor Identification Method (MIP). The findings revealed that the metaphors belong to several categories: 1) the being category used in Tembang Sinom and Tembang Dandang, 2) the cosmos category appearing in Tembang Durma, Tembang Pangkur, and Tembang Dandang, 3) the energy category in Tembang Asmaradana, Tembang Durma, and Tembang Pangkur, 4) the substance category in Tembang Durma, 5) the terrestrial category in Tembang Durma, Tembang Pangkur, and Tembang Dandang, 6) the object category in Tembang Sinom, Tembang Asmaradana, Tembang Pangkur, and Tembang Dandang, 7) the living category in Tembang Durma, Tembang Pangkur, and Tembang Dandang, and 8) the animate category in Tembang Durma, Tembang Pangkur, and Tembang Dandang. This study is essential for preserving local wisdom, providing an overview of social and cultural life in the past, and serving as material for community reflection in strengthening the national character. This study reflects the ecological conditions of language users and provides insights into the social and cultural lives of the Sasak people.
