Abstract

This research presents a combination of two approaches, historical criticism and narrative criticism, in analyzing the motifs of the author of the book of Judges through the narrative of Israel's deliverance by Gideon. The debate among Old Testament scholars regarding historicity and theological historiography has divided opinions into two camps that are difficult to reconcile. Although each approach has its own strengths and weaknesses, the combination of both can enrich an approach to the analysis of a narrative text. Judges 6-8 are rarely interpreted using both of these approaches. For historical critical interpreters, emphasis on historicity and the documentary sources forming the narrative is crucial. However, they often overlook the literary devices that bind these historical fragments. On the other hand, narrative criticism, which focuses on literary devices, tends to trap interpreters in the subjectivity of interpretation. Some interpretations with ethical, moral, and practical theological nuances have also made leaps too far without considering the author's motifs. Through the combination of historical criticism and narrative criticism, this research has identified the author's motifs as fundamental theological values that can serve as a foundation for developing theology. This research has found that the author of the book encourages the generations of Israel to maintain their identity through theological messages about God's interaction in Israel's history during the era of Gideon.

Abstract

Tantangan kekristenan hari ini adalah kesulitan untuk mempertahankan argumen imandalam berapologetika. Kecenderungan perdebatan yang menjebak banyak orang awammaupun rohaniawan adalah tentang eksistensi Yesus sebagai Tuhan dan manusia.Penulisan artikel ini bertujuan untuk menjawab problematika ini, dengan mengkaji nilaiteologis mengenai pribadi Yesus Kristus dan pelayanan-Nya, yang membuktikan bahwaDia adalah Tuhan yang berkuasa tetapi juga manusia. Beberapa penelitian terdahulu hanyamemberikan penjelasan umum mengenai hubungan keterkaitan Yesus yang adalah manusiadan juga Tuhan, tetapi tidak memberikan perspektif yang lebih mendalam tentang konteksdimaksud sebagai dasar berapologetika. Berdasarkan metode penulisan kualitatif denganpendekatan studi literatur, maka artikel ini menjelaskan beberapa hal, yakni pertama,eksistensi Yesus sebagai Tuhan kelahiran Yesus membuktikan Dia sebagai Tuhan; kedua,eksistensi Yesus sebagai manusia; ketiga, pelayanan Tuhan Yesus membuktikan eksistensiNya sebagai Tuhan dan manusia; dan keempat, jaminan hidup kekal yang diberikanmenguatkan eksistensinya sebagai Tuhan. Hasil penelitian ini menjadi fondasi imankepercayaan setiap orang percaya dalam berapologetika agar bisa berargumen dan bertahandalam menghadapi berbagai serangan.

Abstract

Widow Zarephat faced the toughest struggle to make a choice in her life, namely facing the threat of starvation with little flour and oil left and eventually dying or believing Elijah's words, that God could preserve her life. This narrative of Widow Zarephath's problematic response has rarely been researched and discussed in detail. This research centers on two main elements of this narrative, namely first, the widow Sarfat's response who made the decision to believe Elijah's words as God's prophet and her obedience in carrying out Elijah's orders even though they were contrary to reality; second, Elijah's obedience in following God's orders.  For this reason, this research was conducted in a descriptive qualitative manner, with the sub-genre of narrative literary analysis based on Richard Pratt's method, then this research found that the right decision of this widow has changed her life from crisis and disaster to the guarantee of her life maintenance with her son. The narrative story of the widow Zarephath should be an inspiration and reference for many believers, who are struggling with various life challenges. The right decision and choice can change the situation and condition of life.

Abstract

There are two groups of scholars who discuss Malachi 2:1-3 from different perspectives, namely, the divine perspective and the priestly perspective. These two views have led to the fallacy of dichotomizing the intent of the divine utterance. This article comprehensively correlates these two perspectives, which have implications for believers' decisions, based on the hermeneutic method of studying prophetic literature in the sub-genre of catastrophic prophecy. This article finds that the influence of divine punitive speech has great implications for the factors that influence believers' decisions, namely First, the Listening Factor, which discusses the decision to direct our hearing to the Word of God; Second, the Attention Factor, which discusses the decision to specifically and deliberately provide a sincere heart to fellowship and glorify God; and Third, the Honoring God's Name Factor, as an effect of the previous two factors, which makes every believer choose to honor God's name. The results of this study serve as a warning to every believer, especially to servants of God and ministers in the church as serving priests.

Abstract

Samgar b. Anath is an unpopular judge in the history of the judges. His story only appears in two verses in the Bible, Judges 3:31 and Judges 5:6. The very limited story of Samgar b. Anat makes him less popular and desirable to discuss.   Therefore, this study aims to explore the origin and leadership of Samgar b. Anath as a judge over Israel, which has an impact on preparing oneself to be a leader.   The research used descriptive qualitative method, hermeneutic study and found three important lessons that impacted the preparation of being a leader, namely: first, leaders must prepare themselves well, because God can use anyone to be His chosen one; second, leaders must have a strong sense of confidence; third, leaders must rely on God. This research is very important and serves as input for leaders to decide to live right and make a difference, as well as develop the resources available to them.

Abstract

Judges 4:6-9 records God's call to Barak to lead the attack against Sisera, with the possibility of receiving the honor of victory. Ironically, however, this honor was ultimately denied to Barak because of the controversy surrounding his decision. Most previous studies have focused on Deborah's role, neglecting the significance of Barak's story. This study explores the key factors that led to Barak's controversial decision to provide lessons for any leader entrusted with responsibility by God. Using a descriptive qualitative approach to understand and describe the phenomenon in depth through non-numerical analysis as well as hermeneutic study, this study found three main factors that contributed to Barak's failure: first, his doubts based on real conditions; second, his reliance on human assurance; and third, his lack of trust in God's power. Barak's failure serves as a valuable warning to today's leaders to recognize weaknesses without losing optimism and confidence in the potential that lies within their God-given responsibilities.

Abstract

Amsal 17:27 merupakan teks dalam kumpulan Amsal Salomo yang mengandung kiasan dan paralelisme yang jarang diteliti. Penelitian sebelumnya hanya memasukannya dalam kajian nasihat hikmat dalam kumpulan Amsal Salomo. Oleh sebab itu tujuan artikel ini akan menganalisis bahasa kiasan dan paralelisme sinonim yang terdapat dalam Amsal 17:27 sebagai sebuah nasihat untuk bijak dalam berkata-kata. Bijak dalam berkata berbicara mengenai kedewasaan dan penuh penguasaan diri dalam berkata-kata. Berdasarkan metode hermeneutik sub genre sastra hikmat, maka penelitian ini menemukan beberapa hal yaitu: pertama, menahan diri dalam perkataan; kedua, pengendalian emosi; ketiga, bijaksana dalam berkata. Penlitian ini menjadi masukan bagi siapa saja yang sementara melatih diri untuk menjadi prbadi yang bijak dengan menguasai diri dalam berkata-kata.

Abstract

In today's reality, there are many injustices that occur and are deliberately silenced. Many Christian leaders miss the opportunity to speak the truth under the pressure of today's challenges. This study shows that Proverbs 31:8-9 serves not only as an ethical guide, but also as a specific call for Christian leaders to advocate for justice at all levels of society. There is a research gap in discussing the theological study of Christian leadership from the perspective of the wisdom literature of Proverbs 31:8-9. Therefore, using the hermeneutic research method of the Wisdom Literature sub-genre, this study highlights three main aspects: first, the moral responsibility of a leader to be a voice for the oppressed; second, the importance of courage in the face of structural injustice; and third, the commitment to uphold truth and protect human rights as a reflection of divine character in building leadership based on social justice. The findings of this study provide theological and practical contributions for Christian leaders who seek to emulate biblical values in leading with a just conscience.

Abstract

Based on the literature review, there are two groups of scholars discussing Proverbs 25:21-22: the group that links the writing of this verse to Jesus' teachings on love and forgiveness, and the group that focuses only on the teachings of Paul, who quoted this verse as an exhortation to the Romans to do good to their enemies and that there is a reward for every good deed. The research attempts to examine to analyze the meaning of the phrase "heaping coals of fire" and its implications for character development. The research used a qualitative method with sub-interpretive design, specifically, wisdom literature hermeneutics. This study found three related implementations of this phrase to character building, namely: first, deciding to do the right thing; second, overcoming ego and hatred; third, deciding to live an exemplary life. The results of this study are very important in character building so that believers can apply the values of truth in life and lead exemplary lives, and provide understanding in the development of wisdom literature research. AbstrakAda dua kelompok penelitian dalam pembahasan Amsal 25:21-22 yakni, pertama, kelompok yang menghubungkan tulisan Amsal ini dengan ajaran Yesus mengenai kasih dan kedua, kelompok yang hanya terfokus kepada ajaran Paulus, yang mengutip Amsal ini, sebagai nasihat kepada jemaat Roma, untuk berbuat baik kepada kepada musuh-musuhnya dan ada upah bagi setiap perbuatan baik. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis makna frasa “menimbun bara api” serta implikasinya terhadap pembentukan karakter. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan metode kualitatif dengan sub interpretative design khususnya hermeneutika sastra hikmat. Penelitian ini menemukan tiga implementasi yang berkaitan dari frasa ini terhadap pembentukan karakter, yakni: pertama, memutuskan berbuat benar; kedua, mengatasi ego dan kebencian; ketiga, memilih hidup menjadi teladan. Hasil penelitian ini sangat penting dalam sebuah pembentukan karakter agar orang percaya dapat menerapkan nilai-nilai kebenaran dalam hidup dan hidup menjadi teladan serta memberikan pemahaman dalam perkembangan penelitian sastra hikmat.

Abstract

This captive girl demonstrated an active faith in spite of her oppression. Her testimony became the catalyst for Naaman's healing and his encounter with the God of Israel. This study aims to explore the narrative and thematic dynamics of the story, especially in relation to the themes of witness, God's providence, and inclusiveness in the plan of salvation. This study uses narrative and thematic analysis methods to uncover the theological messages contained in the actions and words of the captive girl. Therefore, four important values emerge from this research: first, the power of forgiveness; second, being trustworthy; third, having mercy; and fourth, trusting God. This research enriches biblical theology's understanding of the role of the "small and powerless" in the fulfillment of God's plan, affirms that hope and salvation can be present in the context of suffering, and makes it relevant to the dialogue of theologies of mission and social justice.AbstrakGadis tawanan ini memperlihatkan iman yang aktif meskipun berada dalam situasi penindasan. Kesaksiannya menjadi katalis untuk penyembuhan Naaman dan perjumpaannya dengan Allah Israel. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengeksplorasi dinamika naratif dan tematik dari kisah tersebut, khususnya terkait tema kesaksian, providensi Allah, dan inklusivitas dalam rencana keselamatan.   Penelitian ini menggunakan metode analisis naratif dan tematik untuk mengungkap pesan teologis yang terkandung dalam tindakan dan perkataan gadis tawanan itu. Oleh sebab itu ada empat nilai penting yang didapat dari penelitian ini, yakni: pertama, kuasa pengampunan; kedua, bisa dipercaya; ketiga, memiliki belas kasihan; dan keempat, mempercayai Tuhan. Riset ini memperkaya pemahaman teologi biblika tentang peran "yang kecil dan tak berdaya" dalam melaksanakan rencana Allah, menegaskan bahwa harapan dan keselamatan dapat hadir dalam konteks penderitaan, sehingga relevan dalam dialog teologi misi dan keadilan sosial. Kata Kunci: Naaman, Gadis, Tawanan
