Abstract

Two poetic literary forms stand out in Psalm 150:1-6: the thirteen times the phrase "praise the Lord" is part of parallelism (synonymy, synthesis, and climax) and the word "hallelujah" as an inclusio at the beginning and end of the text. Many researchers often overlook the richness of meaning and the extraordinary literary features of the poem in this section, because they focus only on examining the context of the structures that correlate and imply praise. This study aims to explore the rich meanings of parallelism and inclusio, which have profound implications for the relationship between creation and creator. Based on the qualitative hermeneutic method of poetic literature, this study found the main reasons for creation to praise its creator, namely: First, recognition of God's sovereignty; Second, gratitude for God's grace and salvation; Third, response to God's faithfulness. This research is an important reference to open insights for every believer to realize that the main task as a creation is to praise and glorify the Creator.

Abstract

The book of Judges 6 is a book that tells the life of the Israelites during the time of the Judges, and one of the most famous stories is about the life of Gideon, an outstanding judge. In verses 25-26 there is an unusual line of narration, which readers will find odd, concerning the "second bull." Any reader would ask, why the second bull? Why not the first bull? Where is the first bull? Dominic Rudman has specifically researched this part of the text, but has not formulated a definitive answer and no other studies have specifically analyzed this phrase. Many interpretations of this phrase, too, are often based on thematic and historical interpretations of Gideon's narrative, without regard to the context of the verse. Since there are very few studies oriented towards this phrase and in order to find its exact meaning, this article analyzes the phrase "second bull" using a qualitative method based on hermeneutic exegesis. This article finds three important meanings of the phrase "the second bull": firstly, it refers to the oxen as per the meaning of the text; secondly, it refers to the oxen set aside for the Lord; and thirdly, it refers to Gideon's obedient response to the Lord. The results of this study have added exegetical and theological insight and value to support a better understanding of this phrase in the book of Judges.

Abstract

Abstract

The unwritten standard of beauty for women is white and clean. As a result, women face more emotional distress to achieve ideal beauty, but this standard of beauty is challenged in Song of Songs 1:5-6, which calls black and beautiful. This study is motivated by the gap in researchers who provide an understanding of the opposition to emotional distress from the standard of beauty from the perspective of women who say I am black but beautiful. The method used in writing this journal is qualitative with a literal study approach. In this writing, the author attempts to see and provide an understanding of the existence of self-acceptance beyond beauty standards based on Song of Songs 1:5. Thus, this research found that a false perspective of beauty can affect women's emotional disorders if it is not accompanied by self-acceptance and self-love.

Abstract

This study examines the concept of "finishing well," which appears in the structure of comparative parallelism, as an emphasized Qōhelet perspective. This verse temporarily contrasts the beginning and the end, indicating that the end is better when done with patience and wisdom. In the literature search, it was found that the study of this text is rarely done, as it is often included in the discussion of the advice of wisdom in this passage. Based on the method of hermeneutic study of the sub-genre of wisdom literature, this study found that there are three perspectives of Qōhelet that encourage one to achieve "finishing well," namely: first, patience as the main factor; second, focusing on the goal; third, avoiding pride. These are the main factors that should be applied to achieve a glorious ending. Every child of God should make these factors the basis of character building in order to persevere to the end.

Abstract

In The parallelism and metaphors found in the structure of Proverbs 4:18-19 highlight the difference between the choice to be righteous or wicked. Parallelism ensures that the wisdom conveyed can be easily remembered and applied, while metaphor enriches the moral message in a way that stirs emotions and imagination. This parallel structure strengthens the narrative about the choice of life paths, accompanied by the implementation of each individual's decision. Meanwhile, the metaphor depicts the final outcome of each choice. This research aims to serve as a life contemplation for everyone to choose the path of righteousness. Based on a hermeneutic study of the wisdom literature subgenre, this method includes structural analysis of parallelism and poetic devices such as metaphors, as well as exploring its theological meaning within social and cultural contexts, along with its implementation in the ethical and moral lives of individuals. The research identifies three life contemplations: first, the path of the righteous is always illuminated by blessings and promotion; second, the path of the wicked is always in darkness and leads to punishment; and third, the path of the wicked is always a stumbling block. The results of this study affirm that the wisdom in Proverbs remains relevant to modern life. By understanding and applying its principles, one can build a life that is wiser, more moral, and oriented toward God's will, both in personal, spiritual, and social contexts.

Abstract

The sin phrase "envy" appears only three times in the entire book of Proverbs, namely Proverbs 3:31; 14:30; 23:17, and this sin has a very negative impact on Gen-Z because it can trigger behavior without ethics and morals. In the literature search, there is a research gap in discussing this sin specifically and comprehensively because the discussion is often combined in wisdom advice and book structure. The purpose of this study is to specifically and comprehensively analyze this sin and its negative impact on the spiritual development of Gen-Z. Based on the hermeneutic method of the subgenre of wisdom literature, this study found that there are four negative effects, namely: first, destructive comparisons; second, emotional health problems; third, spiritual deterioration; and fourth, damaged relationships. This research is a contribution for counselors and educators to better understand and reach out to Gen-Zs who are bound by the sin of envy.

Abstract

Solomon, was a very wise king on this earth, because of God's grace to him. But ironically, Solomon ended his reign by leaving behind a very wrong and fatal decision, namely the division of the kingdom of Israel 1 Kings 11:1-8; 40; 12:1-5. It turned out that free will, which was not properly controlled, had defeated his wisdom. There is a research gap in discussing Solomon's failure. Previous studies focused more on Solomon's wisdom and success. For this reason, the purpose of this study is to explore Solomon's failures and mistakes, at the end of his life, so that they become important lessons for today's leaders. Based on the method of literature study and exposition, several important things were found from the story of Solomon's failure, namely: first, the comfort of being a powerful and rich king; second, ignoring wisdom leads to wrong decisions; third, making the wrong decision in choosing a life partner has fatal consequences. The results of this study are very important, and serve as a reference for leaders who are entrusted with power and responsibility by God to always walk on the truth.

Abstract

Outreach is a term that is very often heard in the evangelistic movement. The term is generally translated as trying to win lost souls. Interestingly, Jude 1:23 is often used in the context of soul winning with an emphasis on the word harpazontes. The purpose of this study is to put the right perspective on the word harpazontes and its implications from an evangelistic point of view. By using a qualitative method with a hermeneutic exegesis study to conduct a theological study of the word harpazontes, this article finds three results of the analysis of the word harpazontes, namely: first, the context of this word refers to the act of seizing souls who have repented only to become shaky and go back astray; second, the context of this word is different from the word "reaching" which refers more to new souls who have not heard of salvation; and third, in its implementation, every believer must also be vigilant and careful in service so as not to fall into sin. This research is a reference for information and opens insights into every evangelistic movement to continue to have compassion for souls and dare to snatch them from the fire.
