Abstract

This study examines the concept of "finishing well," which appears in the structure of comparative parallelism, as an emphasized Qōhelet perspective. This verse temporarily contrasts the beginning and the end, indicating that the end is better when done with patience and wisdom. In the literature search, it was found that the study of this text is rarely done, as it is often included in the discussion of the advice of wisdom in this passage. Based on the method of hermeneutic study of the sub-genre of wisdom literature, this study found that there are three perspectives of Qōhelet that encourage one to achieve "finishing well," namely: first, patience as the main factor; second, focusing on the goal; third, avoiding pride. These are the main factors that should be applied to achieve a glorious ending. Every child of God should make these factors the basis of character building in order to persevere to the end.

Abstract

The book of Judges 6 is a book that tells the life of the Israelites during the time of the Judges, and one of the most famous stories is about the life of Gideon, an outstanding judge. In verses 25-26 there is an unusual line of narration, which readers will find odd, concerning the "second bull." Any reader would ask, why the second bull? Why not the first bull? Where is the first bull? Dominic Rudman has specifically researched this part of the text, but has not formulated a definitive answer and no other studies have specifically analyzed this phrase. Many interpretations of this phrase, too, are often based on thematic and historical interpretations of Gideon's narrative, without regard to the context of the verse. Since there are very few studies oriented towards this phrase and in order to find its exact meaning, this article analyzes the phrase "second bull" using a qualitative method based on hermeneutic exegesis. This article finds three important meanings of the phrase "the second bull": firstly, it refers to the oxen as per the meaning of the text; secondly, it refers to the oxen set aside for the Lord; and thirdly, it refers to Gideon's obedient response to the Lord. The results of this study have added exegetical and theological insight and value to support a better understanding of this phrase in the book of Judges.

Abstract

In The parallelism and metaphors found in the structure of Proverbs 4:18-19 highlight the difference between the choice to be righteous or wicked. Parallelism ensures that the wisdom conveyed can be easily remembered and applied, while metaphor enriches the moral message in a way that stirs emotions and imagination. This parallel structure strengthens the narrative about the choice of life paths, accompanied by the implementation of each individual's decision. Meanwhile, the metaphor depicts the final outcome of each choice. This research aims to serve as a life contemplation for everyone to choose the path of righteousness. Based on a hermeneutic study of the wisdom literature subgenre, this method includes structural analysis of parallelism and poetic devices such as metaphors, as well as exploring its theological meaning within social and cultural contexts, along with its implementation in the ethical and moral lives of individuals. The research identifies three life contemplations: first, the path of the righteous is always illuminated by blessings and promotion; second, the path of the wicked is always in darkness and leads to punishment; and third, the path of the wicked is always a stumbling block. The results of this study affirm that the wisdom in Proverbs remains relevant to modern life. By understanding and applying its principles, one can build a life that is wiser, more moral, and oriented toward God's will, both in personal, spiritual, and social contexts.

Abstract

The sin phrase "envy" appears only three times in the entire book of Proverbs, namely Proverbs 3:31; 14:30; 23:17, and this sin has a very negative impact on Gen-Z because it can trigger behavior without ethics and morals. In the literature search, there is a research gap in discussing this sin specifically and comprehensively because the discussion is often combined in wisdom advice and book structure. The purpose of this study is to specifically and comprehensively analyze this sin and its negative impact on the spiritual development of Gen-Z. Based on the hermeneutic method of the subgenre of wisdom literature, this study found that there are four negative effects, namely: first, destructive comparisons; second, emotional health problems; third, spiritual deterioration; and fourth, damaged relationships. This research is a contribution for counselors and educators to better understand and reach out to Gen-Zs who are bound by the sin of envy.

Abstract

Abstract

The book of James is one of the epistles in the general epistles section of the New Testament. An interesting part of the book is found in James 4:3 which contains a statement by James about the phrase "wrong prayer" which is a major part of the thematic discussion of prayer in the Letter of James. There is no previous researcher who focuses specifically on the phrase "wrong prayer", making this research so important to study because it relates to the wrong motivation in praying, and has implications for receiving answers to prayer from God. This article focuses on discussing the hermeneutic study of the phrase "wrong prayer" as an implementation of motivation in prayer, using qualitative research methods in a hermeneutic exegesis approach. This article finds three appropriate motivations for prayer, as a result of analyzing the phrase "wrong prayer" in James 4:3, namely: first, ask for what is in accordance with God's will; second, do not focus on the answer to prayer, focus on God as the source of life; third, remain grateful if God has not answered prayer because He knows the right time to answer. The results of this study serve as a reference for the implementation of understanding the motivation of every believer who is struggling in prayer and waiting for God's answer.

Abstract

Abstract: The Holy Spirit is a gift and serves as a helper for every believer. Through the work of the Holy Spirit, the fruit of the Spirit emerges as a manifestation of God's character in the life of the believer. In many literature studies, research on the Holy Spirit (pneuma) often only focuses on practical contexts, but research on the impact of the Holy Spirit (pneuma) on believers often does not get enough attention. This research uses thematic analysis and literature study as an effort to find a better understanding of how the Holy Spirit works in the life of believers and how it affects the expression of God's character in them. The results of this study show that the acceptance of the Holy Spirit has implications, namely: first, it is a sign or proof of faith in Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit is seen as a gift from God for those who believe. The consequence of acceptance of the Holy Spirit is that believers will always be led by the Holy Spirit. Second, acceptance of the Holy Spirit will bring about changes (transformation) in line with God’s will, meaning God’s character will be reproduced in the life of the believer. Third, the fruit of the Spirit is God’s character reproduced in the life of believers by Jesus Christ or through the work of the Holy Spirit. These findings are expected to be a reference for scholars and servants of God in learning about the Holy Spirit and also to prepare teaching materials for the congregation.

Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to examine the interrelationship between 'fear of God' and 'hatred of evil' as they relate to individual character development. This research focuses on answering two questions, firstly, is the meaning of fearing God the same as hating evil, and secondly, can hating evil be a guarantee of commitment to fearing God? There is a gap in research that explores character formation based on the nature of the fear of the Lord in Proverbs 8:13 as an answer to the questions posed. Therefore, based on the qualitative research method and the hermeneutic approach of the sub-genre of wisdom literature, this study was carried out to argue that: first, hating evil is a manifestation of the choice to fear God; second, there are three serious commitments in hating evil that have implications for character building, namely 1). Not to be arrogant and haughty; 2) Not to commit evil deeds; and 3) Not to speak misleading words. The results of this study show that the fear of God is an important foundation for character development.

Abstract

Solomon, was a very wise king on this earth, because of God's grace to him. But ironically, Solomon ended his reign by leaving behind a very wrong and fatal decision, namely the division of the kingdom of Israel 1 Kings 11:1-8; 40; 12:1-5. It turned out that free will, which was not properly controlled, had defeated his wisdom. There is a research gap in discussing Solomon's failure. Previous studies focused more on Solomon's wisdom and success. For this reason, the purpose of this study is to explore Solomon's failures and mistakes, at the end of his life, so that they become important lessons for today's leaders. Based on the method of literature study and exposition, several important things were found from the story of Solomon's failure, namely: first, the comfort of being a powerful and rich king; second, ignoring wisdom leads to wrong decisions; third, making the wrong decision in choosing a life partner has fatal consequences. The results of this study are very important, and serve as a reference for leaders who are entrusted with power and responsibility by God to always walk on the truth.

Abstract

One of the distinctive features of the book of Revelation is its abundant use of symbols, including names that serve as lessons and warnings to believers. Revelation 2:13, 14, and 20 mention three names—Antipas, Balaam, and Jezebel—that carry rich symbolic meaning. However, many scholarly studies on Revelation often overlook the theological significance of these figures as important messages for the church. Therefore, this research seeks to explore the meaning and relevance of these three names for character formation. Using a qualitative hermeneutic method focused on symbolic analysis, this study finds that Antipas represents faithfulness and integrity amid persecution; Balaam represents deceit and moral compromise, which calls for vigilance and ethical discernment; and Jezebel symbolizes immorality and idolatry, which must be rejected and guarded against. These messages provide crucial guidance for believers in building character and living righteously according to Biblical truth, especially in facing challenges in the last days.
