Abstract

On September 28, 2018, Palu experienced one of the most significant natural disasters in its history, consisting of three types of catastrophes: earthquakes, tsunamis, and liquefaction. Natural disasters have severe impacts, but life continues through the ability to engage in social action. This research analyzed social action in the aftermath of the Palu disaster from Max Weber’s perspective. A qualitative method with a literature review approach was used. The researchers examined articles from journals, conference proceedings, and book chapters retrieved from databases such as Sinta, Scopus, DOAJ, and Google Scholar. These sources were then analyzed and discussed using Max Weber’s books on social action theory. The research found that social action after the Palu disaster is categorized into five ideal types: instrumental rational action, value-rational action, emotional action, traditional action, and communal-conscious action. Each ideal type reflects unique characteristics. The actors play a crucial role in rebuilding Palu, contributing to recovery, development, and empowerment. Contribution: This article sociologically presents depictions of the behavior of the Palu community after natural disasters from the perspective of a social theory. Using this framework, the researchers analyze how the people of Palu engage in social action following the disasters, emphasizing the collaborative efforts of social actors in driving transformation over time. This transformation empowers the community to rebuild their lives, strengthen resilience, and work toward a more sustainable and adaptive future in the face of ongoing and future challenges.

Abstract

The church stands by the conditions of natural communities. Nevertheless, the church in history must accept that technology is also present. In this case, the church must make technology a companion, not an opposition. The church works with technology, one of which produces communities on social media. This research used the theory of Tim Hutchings and Irwyn L. Ince Jr. on ecclesiology. This research aimed to analyze virtual communities in the online world and natural communities in the offline world as different needs by revealing the closeness of the church and social media in the digital era. The method was qualitative research with a literature review and observation. The researchers found that the relationship between the church and social media in the digital era is not a big problem as long as people understand their priorities and conditions, namely setting themselves into virtual communities as secondary needs and natural communities as primary needs.

Abstract

Abstract: The notion of overworking, whether due to high job demands or personal choice, as normal is a fallacy. Overwork culture happens to women and causes serious problems for the body, one of which results in burnout, and even has implications for modern slavery. The researcher’s argument is that the culture of overwork experienced by women is a reflection of modern slavery, which is very crucial because it causes the body to experience burnout, so efforts to actualise theological actions need to be done to respect the health of the body, both physical and mental. The purpose of this research was to criticise the culture of overwork in women as a form of modern slavery and then respond to it with health theology. This research method was qualitative with a literature review study. This research used Tyler J. VanderWeele’s theory of health theology from a Christian perspective. The result of this study is that women have the right to determine the health of life for the body. Women have the capacity to reject the reality of modern slavery. The culture of work should be more concerned with balance and pay attention to the health of the body. Women should express their bodies without pressure and suffering. Respecting the body with rest is the principle of maintaining a healthy physical and mental condition.

Abstract

In a nation of diverse beliefs like Indonesia, there can never be enough discourse on articulating ways to pursue peace. This article proposes that reimagining Jesus Christ as a social philosopher with inclusive sociability is crucial in motivating Christians’ social attitudes in public spheres in Indonesia. As the central figure of the Christian faith, this constructive imagination is particularly relevant in Indonesia, where the “what would Jesus do” religiosity is prominent. To analyse and construct Jesus as a social philosopher with inclusive sociability, this article utilises two approaches: content analysis and conversation analysis. The research finds that, as a social philosopher, Jesus exhibits a capacity for critical reasoning accompanied by a humanising attitude. This is evident in how He interacts across cultures, accepts sociocultural differences, and embodies unconditional love, unlimited forgiveness, and selfless humility. This research presents a critical model for Indonesian Christians to pursue friendships and relational harmony amidst differences, based on an ethic of empathy.

Abstract

Abstract

The characteristics of Indonesian society are firmly attached to the image of expressing language orally, which has been done since long ago and has survived until now. Folk beliefs and imagination are the main essences of cultured human life when creating stories. Although the current situation signifies a modern life, the researcher argued that folklore is an oral tradition still relevant to life’s context substantially and functionally, as on kayori from Central Sulawesi. This research aimed to revitalise kayori as folklore in Central Sulawesi, an oral tradition about natural disasters. The researcher generated knowledge in this research qualitatively as a method that included a literature review study. The researcher collected and used reference sources related to the variables of this study. The research showed that kayoriis a folklore that affirms oral tradition as an art to express the function of learning and remembering the messages in poems and sounds. The messages of kayori have implications for practical actions for the community regarding natural disaster mitigation related to disaster policy, ethics, religiosity, and ecological values. In the end, the verbal art of kayoriremained a part of the futuristic world because it provided knowledge on humanitarian and environmental aspects related to natural disasters in the contemporary era.
