Abstract

Microbial contamination can cause health issues that are disruptive, harmful, and potentially dangerous to health. Microbial contamination is often found in beverages widely sold on the streets, where water quality and cleanliness are often neglected. This study aims to determine the level of microbial contamination in fruit juice products sold in Semarang. The five samples used were lemon, mango, avocado, orange, and tomato juices, which were tested using the Total Plate Count method. The results of this study showed that the Total Plate Count (TPC) values of three samples such as lemon, mango, and avocado juices, did not meet the requirements of SNI 01-3719-1995. Meanwhile, two samples, orange and tomato juices, were concluded to still comply with the threshold set by SNI 01-3719-1995.

Abstract

Abstract

Mefenamic acid is a derivative of anthranilic acid that functions as a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), antipyretic, and analgesic. Mefenamic acid is included in the Biopharmaceutical Classification System (BCS) class II which has low solubility and high permeability. The manufacture of SNEDDS requires a non-ionic surfactant with an HLB (Hydrophilic-Lipophilic Balance) value of more than 10. Mefenamic acid has high solubility in the surfactant Labrasol which has HLB 12 and Tween 80 which has HLB 15. This study aims to develop mefenamic acid into a Self Nano-Emulsifying Drug Delivery System (SNEDDS) with the optimization of labrasol and tween 80 as surfactants. The optimization of mefenamic acid SNEDDS is made using the simplex lattice design method. In the optimization, 6 running SNEDDS formulas were obtained with mefenamic acid. Chemical physics testing includes organoleptic evaluation, pH, viscosity, percent of transmitters, emulsification time, stability, particle size, potential zeta, and level determination. The results showed that the optimal combination of labrasol and tweenat SNEDDS mefenamic acid 80, namely 24% Labrasol and 1% Tween 80, with a desirability value of 0.984, had a clear, non-rancid, homogeneous, liquid-shaped color, pH of 4.69, viscosity 31.33 cP, transmitter percentage 96.80%, emulsification time 29.11 seconds, particle size 44.30 nm, zeta potential -28.87 mV, and a polydispersivity index of 0.563, with a percentage of levels of 100.08%, 100.70%, and 99.87%, respectively. Key words: Self Nano-Emulsifying Drug Delivery System (SNEDDS), Labrasol, Tween 80

Abstract

Jojoba oil (Simmondsia chinensis) is widely utilized as a natural ingredient in skincare product development due to its numerous dermatological benefits. Its flavonoid content acts as an antioxidant, contributing to skin protection against damage. This study aimed to evaluate the potential of jojoba oil in lotion formulations. Objective: To develop lotion formulations containing jojoba oil at concentrations of 0% (F0), 2.5% (F1), 7.5% (F2), and 12.5% (F3). Methods: This experimental study involved the formulation of lotions with varying concentrations of jojoba oil as the active ingredient, namely F0 (0%), F1 (2.5%), F2 (7.5%), and F3 (12.5%). The prepared formulations were evaluated for their physical properties, including organoleptic characteristics, pH, viscosity, homogeneity, and spreadability. Results: Among the tested formulations, F2 containing 7.5% jojoba oil demonstrated the most favorable characteristics. It exhibited a slightly viscous consistency, yellowish-white color, smooth texture, rose fragrance, homogeneous appearance, pH value of 8, viscosity of 1981.0 mPa·s, and spreadability within the acceptable range of 5–7 cm. Conclusion: Based on the physical evaluation tests (organoleptic properties, homogeneity, pH, viscosity, and spreadability), formulations F0 and F3 did not meet the pH requirements, while F0 and F1 failed to comply with the viscosity standards. Formulation F2 was the only formulation that satisfied all evaluated physical parameters.

Abstract

Acne vulgaris is a common skin disorder, particularly among adolescents, often caused by the bacteria Cutibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus epidermidis. Antibiotic resistance in acne treatment necessitates the development of natural-based alternatives. This study aims to formulate and evaluate the antibacterial activity of acne patches based on kawista bark extract (Limonia acidissima L.) at varying concentrations of 25%, 50%, and 75%. Extraction was performed by maceration using 96% ethanol, and patches were formulated with a combination of HPMC and PVP polymers. Physical property tests included organoleptic evaluation, weight uniformity, drying shrinkage, thickness, folding endurance, and pH. Antibacterial activity was tested using the diffusion method against Cutibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus epidermidis. Results showed that all formulations met good physical patch standards, being : homogeneous, stable, thickness less than 1 mm, folding endurance greater than 300 times, and pH of 6. Antibacterial activity increased with higher extract concentration, with the largest inhibition zones observed at 75% concentration (15.16 mm for C. acnes and 18.05 mm for S. epidermidis), approaching the effectiveness of the positive control (clindamycin 10%). This study demonstrates that kawista bark extract acne patches have potential as an alternative topical acne therapy with strong antibacterial activity and physical characteristics that meet modern patch preparation standards.
