Abstract

This research was conducted in Aipiri Village, East Manokwari District, with the aim of examining the motivations of indigenous farmers (OAP) in horticultural farming in Aipiri Village, East Manokwari District. The research employed survey and case study methods. The sampling method used in this research was simple random sampling. The population of this study consisted of indigenous farmers (OAP) engaged in horticultural farming in Aipiri Village, East Manokwari District. The results of this study indicate that farmers have a high motivation for existence needs, with 70.6% of farmers motivated to meet their children's educational expenses and 72.5% motivated to fulfill supporting educational needs for their children. For relatedness needs, 60.8% of farmers were motivated to gain new experiences from other farmers, and 70.6% were motivated to provide experiences to other farmers. For growth needs, 62.7% of farmers were motivated to use modern equipment, and 82.4% were motivated to implement the internet.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the role of customary law and the concept of ethnoecology in supporting sustainable agricultural practices, while analyzing their integration as a model of agriculture based on local wisdom. The study used a qualitative approach with field study and literature study methods. Primary data were obtained through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and focus group discussions with customary leaders and farmers, while secondary data were obtained from customary documents and related literature. Data analysis was conducted using the interactive model of Miles & Huberman through data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions through source triangulation. The results show that customary law plays a role as a local regulation in agricultural management, while ethnoecology exists as a technical practice that maintains ecosystem balance. The integration of the two forms a sustainable agricultural system, not only increasing productivity but also maintaining environmental sustainability and strengthening social solidarity. This study confirms that customary law not only has social value but is also an ecological instrument relevant to modern sustainable agriculture.

Abstract

The West Papua Provincial Government in 2018 declared West Papua as a Province of Sustainable Development, which was reinforced by the enactment of Regional Regulation No. 10 of 2019.  In its development, West Papua Province was then divided into two provinces, namely West Papua and West Papua South. With the enactment of the second revision of the Special Autonomy Law No. 2 of 2021, the threat of regional division has grown, including the shrinking of productive agricultural land in food-producing areas.  The objectives of this study are to (1) examine the development of provincial conservation policies in West Papua; (2) explore the agenda for regional division accompanied by commitments to sustainable development in West Papua Province; and (3) analyze the production capacity of staple foods in West Papua Province.  This research is a case study in which West Papua Province was deliberately selected. A descriptive method with a desk study approach was used as the data analysis method. The results of the study concluded that (1) the current West Papua Conservation Province policy is not running as it should; (2) the policy of forming new autonomous regions (DOB) has caused each cultural entity to focus on expanding itself and neglecting the sustainable development commitments initiated since 2015; and (3) the production of staple food commodities, particularly rice, in West Papua has experienced a drastic decline over the past five years, threatening local food security.  West Papua is projected to face a rice deficit of 23.27 tons by 2025.

Abstract

Teluk Bintuni is one of the insecure food regions in Indonesia. In 2023, the total production of food crops in Teluk Bintuni is below of food requirement. This research aims to develop a strategy to fulfill the food crop requirement in Teluk Bintuni through a dynamic model approach using the Vensim 10.0.0 educational version software. Generally, this research consists of four main stages, i.e., data inventory, dynamic model design, data analysis, and recommendations. The research shows that food demand in Teluk Bintuni can be fulfilled through the optimization of land that has been provided by the government. Other solutions are increasing the Cropping Index (CI) from 2 times to 3 times and using superior varieties that have higher productivity.

Abstract

The mentoring activity for establishing pineapple and vegetable demonstration plots (demplots) in Taroi District, Teluk Bintuni Regency, is a collaborative effort between the Tangguh LNG Bintuni company and the University of Papua (UNIPA). This program is designed to enhance the knowledge, skills, and motivation for gardening among Taroi residents, enabling them to produce vegetables and pineapples as new economically valuable income sources. The activities were conducted across four villages: Taroi, Tambanewa, Pera-pera, and Sorondouni. The commodities used in the demonstration plots were pineapple, chili, upland kangkong (water spinach), and mustard greens. The methodology employed was a participatory approach, including surveys, interviews, training, and pre-test/post-test evaluations. The implementation consisted of five main stages: site survey, Focus Group Discussions (FGD), participant selection, preparation of tools and materials, establishment of the demonstration plots, and activity evaluation. The results indicated that the majority of the Taroi District community resides in coastal areas with relatively thick peat soil conditions. Consequently, the local residents generally had little interest in planting vegetables, except for pineapple, which was grown with minimal maintenance. Findings also showed that prior to the mentoring, 59% of participants did not know how to control pests and diseases (OPT), 25% used pesticides, 8% removed diseased plants, and 8% regularly weeded. Only a small number of participants recognized the importance of limiting seeds per planting hole (27.27%), the importance of nurseries (28.57%), and types of fertilizers (42.86%). After the mentoring sessions, the participants' knowledge and skills increased to 100%. Furthermore, 84% of participants agreed with the implementation of this activity, and 76.92% agreed that the program provides long-term benefits for the community.

Abstract

Peningkatan timbulan limbah sayur dan buah di Pasar Wosi, Kabupaten Manokwari, menimbulkan persoalan lingkungan seperti bau, pencemaran lindi, dan tingginya beban TPA akibat tidak adanya pemilahan dan pengolahan limbah organik. Kegiatan pengabdian ini bertujuan meningkatkan kapasitas masyarakat dalam mengelola limbah organik pasar melalui pelatihan pengomposan aerobik, mengevaluasi kualitas kompos yang dihasilkan, serta menerapkan kompos pada tanaman hortikultura untuk melihat efektivitasnya. Metode yang digunakan meliputi koordinasi dengan stakeholder, edukasi teori, praktik pembuatan kompos menggunakan bahan limbah pasar, dan EM11, serta monitoring proses fermentasi selama 30 hari. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan tingginya partisipasi masyarakat dan kemampuan peserta dalam melakukan pemilahan, pencacahan, pencampuran, hingga pembalikan kompos secara mandiri. Kompos yang dihasilkan memiliki ciri fisik matang dan mampu memperbaiki struktur tanah serta meningkatkan pertumbuhan tanaman jagung, tomat, dan ubi jalar. Program ini terbukti mengurangi jumlah limbah organik yang dibuang ke TPA serta memberikan manfaat sosial dan ekonomi melalui potensi pemanfaatan kompos sebagai pupuk lokal. Kegiatan ini menegaskan pentingnya kolaborasi antara perguruan tinggi, pemerintah daerah, dan masyarakat dalam mendukung program Manokwari 0 Sampah dan pertanian berkelanjutan.
