Abstract

Propolis Trigona sp. has many benefits closely related to the secondary metabolites contained therein. Previous research related to propolis screening of Trigona sp. from North Lombok has been carried out. Still, it has yet to be carried out in the maceration method (1:20 w/v) with 70% water and ethanol solvent to obtain a comparison of secondary metabolites between the two solvents. This study aims to identify the content of secondary metabolites in the water extract and 70% ethanol extract of propolis Trigona sp. from North Lombok. Propolis was macerated with water and 70% ethanol solvent. The viscous extract was identified for its physical characteristics, consistency, color, and chemical characteristics through phytochemical screening. The results of the phytochemical screening showed that the aqueous extract and 70% ethanol extract contained alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, triterpenoids, and quinones. Both extracts showed negative saponin results.

Abstract

The increasing prevalence of antibiotic resistance shows the urgent need for discovering alternative compounds with potential antibacterial activity. Ipomoea pes-caprae (commonly known as katang-katang) has emerged as a promising natural source of antibacterial agents due to its bioactive constituents, including phenolics, alkaloids, flavonoids, and saponins. The purpose of this article is to review and compare previously reported antibacterial research findings of Ipomoea pes-caprae against various bacterial species. The literature review was conducted using relevant sources obtained from Google Scholar and PubMed databases, covering publications from 2014 to 2024. The findings show that different parts of Ipomoea pes-caprae exhibit antibacterial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial strains, attributed to the presence of antibacterial compounds. Factors influencing the antibacterial activity of the extracts include the type of test bacteria, the extract concentration, and the solvent used. It can be concluded that Ipomoea pes-caprae has potential as an antibacterial agent.

Abstract

Monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) have become a key component in modern biotechnology and healthcare, playing essential roles in the treatment of diseases such as cancer, viral and bacterial infections, asthma, and in diagnostic applications. However, conventional mAb production using mammalian cell systems is costly, time-consuming, and presents scalability limitations. To address these challenges, current technological advances have led to the development of alternative platforms using plant-based expression systems. This review aims to explore the potential and progress in producing monoclonal antibodies through the Nicotiana benthamiana plant-based expression system, which offers several advantages including rapid production, cost efficiency, greater production capacity, and reduced risk of contamination. The method employed in this review is a literature study conducted through database searches (Google Scholar, PubMed, Science Direct, and others) focusing on peer-reviewed articles from 2015 to 2024. The articles were selected and then analyzed thematically was performed to extract relevant data. The results indicate that Nicotiana benthamiana can efficiently produce functional mAbs with glycosylation profiles comparable to mammalian systems. In addition, plant antibodies have also been successfully applied in various therapeutic and diagnostic studies. Further research is needed to ensure the safety and effectiveness of Nicotiana benthamiana plant-based mAb, as well as efforts to develop production scale for wider medical applications.

Abstract

Herpes zoster is a viral skin infection caused by the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus, which remains latent in the dorsal root ganglia of the spinal cord and the cranial sensory ganglia. One of the most widely used classes of antiviral agents in the treatment of herpes zoster is nucleoside analogs. This study aims to review the use of nucleoside analogs in the management of herpes zoster. The method employed was a literature review of relevant research articles. The findings indicate that nucleoside analogs commonly used in herpes zoster therapy include acyclovir, valacyclovir, famciclovir, and brivudine. These agents are administered in various doses, routes, and therapeutic purposes, such as alleviating acute symptoms, accelerating skin lesion healing, preventing postherpetic neuralgia, and serving as prophylactic therapy in special conditions such as cancer or organ transplantation. Overall, the use of nucleoside analogs has proven effective in inhibiting varicella-zoster virus replication, reducing symptom intensity, and minimizing the risk of complications.

Abstract

Abstract

Propolis has been touted for its ability to regulate blood sugar levels in diabetes, but the effectiveness can vary depending on the region. A study was conducted to investigate the effect of propolis Trigona sp. water extract on blood sugar levels in vivo. The mice were divided into three groups, with four mice in each group. The positive control group received a 5 mg/kgBW glibenclamide suspension, the negative control group was given a 0.25% CMC-Na suspension, and the treatment group was administered with water extract of propolis at a dose of 300 mg/kgBW. All groups were induced with a 20% D-glucose solution intraperitoneally, and blood sugar levels were measured at 15, 30, 60, 90, and 120 minutes via the tail vein. The blood sugar data was analyzed and presented descriptively. The Mann-Whitney statistical analysis was used to determine the results, revealing that the water extract of propolis at 300 mg/kgBW did not have a significant effect on reducing blood sugar levels in animals induced by a 20% D-glucose solution, with a significance value (p < 0.05).
