Abstract

Abstract

Incision wounds are characterized by tissue damage or loss caused by sharp objects. Inflammation is the body's protective response to infection, irritation, or injury, marked by redness, heat, swelling, pain, and tissue dysfunction. Styrax paralleloneurus resin has potential wound-healing properties. This study aimed to investigate the anti-inflammatory effects of Styrax paralleloneurus extract on incision wounds in male white mice. Twenty-five mice were divided into five groups: positive control (Betadin), negative control (Vaseline), and three groups receiving 5%, 10%, and 15% Styrax paralleloneurus extract concentrations. Incision wounds (1cm x 0.2cm) were created on the dorsal area. Wound length and closure were observed daily using calipers. ANOVA analysis revealed significant differences (p=0.138 > 0.05) among the extract concentrations, indicating a concentration-dependent anti-inflammatory effect. The 15% concentration demonstrated the fastest wound healing. Bioactive compounds, such as flavonoids, saponins, and terpenoids, likely contribute to the anti-inflammatory effects. This study supports previous research on Styrax paralleloneurus' wound-healing properties. The results suggest Styrax paralleloneurus extract as a potential phytotherapeutic agent for wound healing. Further clinical trials and stability testing are recommended to develop a phytopharmaceutical product. Future studies should investigate the extract's mechanism of action and potential interactions with other medications. Conclusion The 15% concentration of Styrax paralleloneurus extract exhibited the fastest anti-inflammatory effects on incision wounds in male white mice.Recommendations: Conduct clinical trials to assess the stability, efficacy, and safety of Styrax paralleloneurus extract for phytopharmaceutical product development.

Abstract

Hemodialysis is a therapeutic intervention used to replace kidney function when the kidneys are no longer able to perform their physiological roles adequately, and it is initiated when conservative treatment fails to maintain renal function. Uremic pruritus is a commonly used term referring to a dermatological symptom characterized by an itching sensation that provokes the urge to scratch and is highly prevalent among patients undergoing hemodialysis. The administration of olive oil was conducted to evaluate its long-term effect on reducing the severity of pruritus. The objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness of olive oil application in reducing pruritus among hemodialysis patients at Putri Hijau Hospital, Medan. This study employed a pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest–posttest approach. The research was conducted from February to April 2025 at Putri Hijau Hospital, Medan. The total population consisted of 60 patients, and a sample of 37 respondents was selected using purposive sampling. Bivariate analysis was performed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. The results showed that on the first day prior to olive oil application, the majority of hemodialysis patients experienced unbearable itching, with 18 respondents (48.6%). On the fifth day after the intervention, the majority of patients reported mild itching, with 19 respondents (51.4%). Based on the Wilcoxon test results, the significance value was less than 0.05, indicating a statistically significant effect. The study findings demonstrate that olive oil application significantly reduced pruritus among hemodialysis patients at Putri Hijau Hospital, Medan, with a two-tailed significance value of 0.000 (<0.05).

Abstract

Background: Dietary adherence is a crucial component in the management of patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) undergoing hemodialysis. Non-adherence may lead to metabolic imbalance, increased morbidity, and reduced quality of life. Objective: To identify factors associated with dietary non-adherence among patients with CKD undergoing hemodialysis at Imelda Hospital, Medan. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among patients undergoing routine hemodialysis. Data were collected using structured questionnaires assessing knowledge, attitudes, and family support related to dietary adherence. Statistical analysis was performed using chi-square tests and logistic regression with a significance level of p < 0.05. Results: Knowledge, attitudes, and family support were significantly associated with dietary non-adherence (p < 0.05). Family support was identified as the most influential factor. Conclusion: Dietary non-adherence among hemodialysis patients is influenced by knowledge, attitudes, and family support. Strengthening patient education and family-centered nursing interventions is essential to improve dietary adherence.
