Abstract

The purpose of this research is to know the role of imports in development in Indonesia, the research methods in this research are the library study method, the data collection technique used is secondary data with content analysis techniques. Import activities have a complex impact on human resources in Indonesia. On the one hand, imports can create new jobs for Indonesian people, especially in the distribution and trade sectors, but on the other hand, they can also threaten jobs in manufacturing and agriculture, where local production can compete less with cheaper imports, and import activities can have a positive and negative impact on poverty in Indonesia. The results of this study show that importing activities tend to have a negative impact on natural resources, i.e. they can reduce the sustainability of living resources, they can affect mineral resource sustainability, and they affect forest resources sustainability and reduce forest resource reserves. Import activities have a positive and a negative impact on poverty in Indonesia. The positive impact can occur when imports are used to meet the needs of raw materials or capital goods that are not available in the country, while the negative impact can lead to a reduction in employment and income for the people.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

North Sumatra, a province abundant in economic potential and natural resources, still grapples with severe poverty. This phenomenon of poverty is not influenced by a single factor but by a multitude of interrelated economic variables. In this study, data collection is carried out secondarily, utilizing up-to-date data from the Central Bureau of Statistics. The research method employed is descriptive quantitative. From the analysis, it is evident that the R Square value stands at 0.991. This indicates that the variables of Income per Capita (X1), Human Development Index (X2), and Unemployment Rate (X3) collectively influence the Poverty Level (Y) by 99.1%. The decision-making process can be informed by the time span of the data or the specific areas from which the data is derived. Despite North Sumatra’s rich resources, poverty remains a significant issue, underlining the complexity and interplay of various economic factors. The high R Square value suggests a strong correlation between income, human development, and employment levels in determining poverty. This comprehensive understanding emphasizes the necessity for targeted policies that address these interlinked factors to effectively combat poverty in the region. By analyzing secondary data from credible sources, the study highlights the importance of a multifaceted approach in addressing poverty. The insights derived from the data can guide policymakers in formulating strategies that not only boost economic growth but also ensure equitable development, thereby reducing poverty levels. The findings underscore the critical need for continuous monitoring and analysis of these economic variables to foster sustainable development in North Sumatra.

Abstract

Economic growth remains a central goal in Indonesia's development agenda, yet it is often hindered by persistent poverty and unemployment. This study investigates the mediating role of the Human Development Index (HDI) in the relationship between poverty, unemployment, and economic growth across 11 provinces in Indonesia during the 2014–2023 period. Using a quantitative approach and panel data analysis, the study employs path analysis to examine both direct and indirect effects. The results indicate that poverty significantly reduces HDI, and HDI significantly mediates the effect of poverty on economic growth. However, HDI does not significantly mediate the relationship between unemployment and economic growth. The Fixed Effect Model (FEM) was selected as the most appropriate model based on Chow, Hausman, and Lagrange Multiplier tests. The Sobel test confirms the significant mediating role of HDI in the poverty–growth pathway, but not in the unemployment–growth linkage. These findings underscore the importance of enhancing human development as a strategic policy tool to mitigate the negative impacts of poverty on growth. Conversely, the lack of mediation in the unemployment pathway suggests the need for direct employment generation programs. This study contributes to the literature by highlighting the nuanced role of HDI in regional development and offers practical implications for policymakers in aligning social and economic priorities.
