Abstract

Mathematics is mostly related to human life, thus, humans are required to have the mathematical understanding ability in solving life problems since in the elementary school age. Therefore, mathematics learning at school should have relevance value to construct mathematical concept that can be used in real life.  Innovative mathematics learning through Contextual Learning (CTL) model based on Sundanese Culture Ethnomathematics as a local wisdom at which humans use mathematics in their real life, was chosen as a deep solution to increase the mathematical understanding ability, because students live in their culture and society. This study employsan experimental method by conducting pretest and postest control group design. The purpose of this study is to determine the increasing of students’ mathematical understanding ability on experiment class (using CTL model based on Sundanese Ethnomathematics) and control class (using conventional learning model). The result of this study produced conclusion that CTL based on Sundanese ethnomahtematics and conventional model can increasethe mathematical understanding ability significantly. However, the application of CTL model based on Sundanese Ethnomathematics was significantly better than conventional model (62.29%) to increase students’ mathematical understanding ability on learning the basic concepts of rectangular geometry for 4th grade students of elementary school.

Abstract

The Indonesian government has implemented awareness of literacy's importance through the school literacy movement at every level of education. The literacy movement, especially at the elementary school level, is carried out in three stages. There are habituation, development, and learning. The literacy movement's implementation since 2016 at the elementary school level has carried out well. However, there are still some obstacles. The method used is a systematic literature review. It examines various reports of literacy stakeholders in their implementation against each context. These reports found different effective strategies for successfully implementing the literacy movement, which can use as references. It then discovered that various obstacles became the gap in literacy education in Indonesia to be minimized further. This systematic literature review highlights a need to implement meaningful and innovative strategies by utilizing stakeholders such as teachers, school principals, parents, communities, and teacher institutes to provide professional context-based input related to the literacy movement

Abstract

Mathematical proficiency as a goal of learning mathematics and other skills developed by teachers in schools through a didactic and pedagogical activity. The quality of teaching mathematics in elementary education is largely determined by the teacher's perspective on Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) in mathematics learning itself. This study aims to see the perspectives of elementary school teachers who are experienced in teaching mathematics regarding several things that are needed in learning mathematics in elementary schools. The study used a survey method which was conducted on elementary school teachers who have experience in teaching mathematics with various educational backgrounds and different schools (n = 65) through random sampling. The study is focused on investigating the pedagogical perspective, the perspective of mathematics learning objectives, and the perspective of mathematics content taught in elementary schools. These perspectives are arranged in a research instrument in the form of a questionnaire containing multiple answer questions and open-ended answers. Data collection was carried out with the help of google forms. The data analysis used is quantitative and qualitative approaches. The results showed that various innovative learning models were known by the teacher, although not all teachers were sure that they had implemented the learning model according to the syntax of the learning model. Also, teachers are still optimistic that innovative learning models have flexibility so that they can be applied in pandemic conditions.

Abstract

Textbooks are still used as the main learning resource used by teachers in school. The book must provide content that is very supportive in helping students to achieve understanding related to a topic. This study aims to analyze how decimal material is studied in mathematics textbooks published by the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia. The analysis focuses on the content and presentation of math problems available in books. This study uses a qualitative approach with analytical methods. Research findings show that the decimal material focuses more on procedural knowledge than on trying to deepen conceptual understanding. The problems in the book are dominated by problems that only reveal procedural knowledge. There are no questions that reveal representation skill, reasoning, and conceptual understanding. Based on this research, it appears that teachers should make more efforts to find learning resources that more supportive of success in learning mathematics. Because the success of learning mathematics can be seen from the development of mathematical proficiency, not only in computational or numerical skills.

Abstract

Changes in the education system due to COVID-19 pandemic through distance learning (PJJ) have made it difficult to accommodate students’ needs in achieving mathematical proficiency. The needs of these students are based on students learning style preference (KGB), how students obtain information, as one of the determinants of success in learning mathematics. This study aims to investigate the extent to which each student’s KGB can adapt to the PJJ designed through RADEC (Read-Answer-Discuss-Explain-Create) and direct learning. A quasi-experimental study with 2 x 3 factorial designed was conducted involving 56 4th graders from a private elementary school in Bandung. The research instrument used was the KGB scale and mathematical conceptual understanding (MCU) test. The result of this study showed that there were differences in students’ MCU viewed by KGB during PJJ which was more accommodating to visual students. It is necessary to improve the PJJ design that accommodate each KGB.

Abstract

Learning mathematics in grade V elementary schools in general still maximizes the work of teachers and pays little attention to student involvement in learning because it still uses the direct method where mastery is focused on the teacher. This certainly makes student activity in learning and student mathematics learning outcomes less than optimal. In order to solve problems that can increase student performance, activities, and learning outcomes, Problem Based Learning (PBL) is implemented, so the research aims to describe whether the implementation of problem-based learning models (PBL) can be effective in enhancing student performance and learning outcomes in learning mathematics material Scales and Plans for class V SD. The study implementation is guided by the syntax of the problem-based learning model (PBL) including 1) problem orientation; 2) student organizations; 3) guiding individual or group investigations; 4) developing and presenting results; 5) analyze and evaluate. This study was conducted using the One-shot Case Study experimental research design, with 28 fifth grade elementary school students as subjects. Data collection techniques were carried out through tests, observation and documentation studies. The results showed that the performance and results of students' mathematics learning in problem-based learning were interpreted in high criteria with a percentage range of 84,88%-92,12%. This shows that problem-based learning (PBL) as a constructivist learning can provide space and opportunities for students to participate actively in learning by using problem-solving group discussion learning designs, so that students pay attention to accuracy and attitude in the entire series of PBL learning.

Abstract

Pedagogical competence is the main competency that must be possessed by teachers and begins to be learned by every prospective teacher since they study at higher education level. Much of higher education research has forgotten the sustainability of this competency and has put more emphasis on competence in understanding learning content, even though a learning innovation is needed that makes this competency continue so that it is not just theory but practice for prospective teachers. Therefore, this research was conducted with the aim of looking at the responses of students (prospective elementary school teachers) to the usefulness and sustainability of learning innovations that have been carried out through the RADEC (Read-Answer-Discuss-Explain-Create) learning model in order to increase these pedagogical competencies. The research was conducted through a qualitative descriptive method, using data collection techniques through a survey method. The study involved 144 respondents. The data obtained revealed that the majority of students gave a positive response to the RADEC learning process in order to increase their pedagogical competence. Thus, it is hoped that the results of this research can become material for practical reflection for education practitioners to be able to redevelop the RADEC learning model, especially in the context of increasing teacher pedagogical competence in addition to increasing learning content competencies.

Abstract

Success in learning mathematics can be measured through five aspects called the five strands of mathematical proficiency. These five aspects need to be taught fairly, resulting in a change in students' mathematical attitudes where this aspect is still minimally looked at and researched. Therefore, the research aims to analyze changes in students' mathematical dispositions by reviewing the role of e-comics in Realistic Mathematics Education (RME). This context-based mathematics learning approach is assumed to provide meaningful learning for students. This mixed-methods research with a sequential explanatory research design was carried out on 30 elementary school students by combining quantitative data collection and analysis techniques with qualitative data support. The research showed that using e-comics in RME learning significantly improved students' mathematical dispositions with a large effect size (Cohen’s effect size = 0,98). In a qualitative review involving data triangulation, evidence was found that using e-comics in RME learning has a role in facilitating the development of each student indicator, as evidenced in the high students’ enthusiasm or response in learning both in observations, questionnaires, and documentation studies. In this way, it is hoped that this innovation can be researched and developed further on a more diverse scale and content. In addition, this research provides further opportunities for research and teacher training related to developing RME learning designs and e-comics in learning.
