Abstract

Soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) remain among the most prevalent parasitic infections worldwide, particularly in developing countries. Persistent infections can lead to malnutrition, anemia, and impaired cognitive development. However, limited research has examined differences in hemoglobin concentration between children with single versus mixed STH infections. This study aims to compare the hemoglobin levels in school-age children at Al-Jam’iyatul Washliyah Orphanage, Medan, with single and mixed STH infections. A cross-sectional design was employed, involving elementary school children. Stool samples were analyzed using the Kato-Katz method to identify STH species and classify infection type, while hemoglobin levels were measured with a portable analyzer. Data were analyzed using independent t-tests, with statistical significance set at p < 0.05. A total of 150 children participated, with an overall STH infection prevalence of 18.8%; of these, 76.9% had single infections and 23.1% had mixed infections. Mean hemoglobin concentration was significantly lower in children with mixed infections compared to those with single infections (XX ± SD g/dL vs XX ± SD g/dL, p < 0.05). Mixed STH infections were associated with greater reductions in hemoglobin levels than single infections. Targeted deworming and nutritional interventions are essential to reduce anemia risk among vulnerable child populations.

Abstract

Background: More than one and a half million of whole world population are infected by Soil Transmitted Helminths. The most common types of Soil Transmitted Helminths found in human are Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura and Hookworm (Necator americanus and Ancylostoma duodenale). Soil Transmitted Helminths infections are usually found on individuals with poor hygiene, low socioeconomic status, and high risk occupations, such as sheep farmer. Sheep farming in Indonesia is generally a small-scale farm with modest technology. Livestock herding on the pasture may cause the livestock to consume Soil Transmitted Helminths-contaminated grass. Soil is the medium for the maturing of Soil Transmitted Helminths fertilized egg into infective form. Modest handling aspect and poor sanitation allow Soil Transmitted Helminths to be found in farm soil. Objective: To identify Soil Transmitted Helminths in the soil of a sheep farm in Manggis Village, Serbajadi District, Serdang Bedagai Regency. Methods: This observational descriptive study was conducted with cross-sectional approach. 100 of soil samples were collected per 8 square meters through quota sampling from a sheep farm in Manggis Village, Serbajadi District, Serdang Bedagai Regency. The data was collected by carrying out flotation technique in laboratory. Results: Soil Transmitted Helminths eggs were discovered in 17 (17%) out of 100 samples, Hookworm eggs in 14 samples (14%), and Ascaris lumbricoides eggs in 5 (5%) samples. Conclusion: There are Soil Transmitted Helminths in soil of the sheep farm in in Manggis Village, Serbajadi District, Serdang Bedagai Regency.

Abstract

Background: Soil is where humans can do an abundance of activities. Soil can be contaminated by various factors. Soil is also a medium of development, storage and transmission of several types of worms, commonly referred to as Soil-Transmitted Helminths (STH). Objective: The purpose of this study was to find out the characteristics of residential land in the Sukadono Hamlet Helvetia District Deli Serdang. Methods: The sample in this study was 72 soils taken from the front, back left or right of the house. The soil is measured in temperature, humidity, pH value and is checked using a Digital Soil Analyzer. Results: The results showed that most of the soil characteristics in Sukadono Hamlet Helvetia District Deli Serdang were abnormal. The STH examination results also showed that (45.8%) of the 72 soil samples examined positively contained STH. Hookworms were found in (32.9%) soil samples, Ascaris lumbricoides species in (5.3%) soil samples, Strongyloides stercoralis species were found positive in (7.9%) soil samples and a mixture of STH is present in 2 (3.9%) soil samples. Conclusion: The resident soil in research areas had been contaminated by Soil Transmitted Helminths.

Abstract

Background: Otomycosis is a challenge in the medical field, because it requires long-term treatment and follow-up and has a high recurrence rate. In the administration of otomycosis therapy, there are various problems, such as the occurrence of resistance, difficulty in drug application, and requires a long period of time for management. Therefore, choosing the right treatment regimen is very important, so as to reduce the level of resistance caused by the fungus that causes otomycosis. Purpose: To compare the sensitivity of 1% clotrimazole cream and 2% acetic acid solution to fungal isolates of otomycosis patients. Method: This study used true experimental design in vitro with post-test only control group design. Sampling was done by total sampling method during the August-November 20215. Eleven samples were obtained and tested on 3 treatment groups with repetition 3 times, so there was a total of 33 specimens studied. Result: The statistical calculations with the Kruskal-Wallis test from 11 samples tested, obtained a p value < 0.05 which indicated that there was a significant difference in the sensitivity of 1% clotrimazole cream and 2% acetic acid solution. Conclusion: The sensitivity of 1% clotrimazole cream and 2% acetic acid solution has a significant difference on fungal isolates of otomycosis patients
