Abstract

This present research intent to discover the implementation of Virtual Reality (VR) media in supporting drilling strategy to teach English vocabulary to young learners modeled by a current teacher who is taking Independent Learning-Campus Merdeka (Merdeka Belajar-Kampus Merdeka or MBKM) as the participant of this study. She is holding a responsibility to teach English lesson to a school partnership. The school that is in partnership is Trikarya Public Elementary School of Cipanas district. This research collected the data through observation on teaching praxis using VR media. As the data were collected, the writer analyzed them. There were six steps in analyzing the data; (1) preparing the data to be analyzed, (2) reading or viewing all data, (3) coding the data, (4) generalizing the code, (5) creating tables based on the data code, and (6) interpret the data code. Over the observation the writers found a new procedure on implementing VR media in teaching English vocabulary to elementary students. There are three stages in this procedure that is called PMP. PMP stands for Pre-Activity, Main Activity, and Post-Activity. Furthermore, there are four activities in the main stage; Watch, Collect, Sharing, and Practice and hereafter is called WCSP. The last finding uncovers that the teacher is using drilling as the teaching strategy to activate the students.

Abstract

Cipanas, Kab. Cianjur, dengan melibatkan 15 guru Bahasa Inggris sekolah dasar. Pelatihan ini diselenggarakan melalui 3 tahapan, yaitu a) persiapan program pelatihan (menganalisis kebutuhan para guru & merancang program pelatihan), b) implementasi program pelatihan, c) evaluasi program pelatihan.

Abstract

Dialogue Journals Writing (DJW) or Written Dialogue Journals are written dialogues or conversations between students and teacher kept in a personal journal book over period of time on a particular topic preferred by both the students and the teacher (Peyton and Reed, 1990; cited from Collin (2003). This study explored the implementation of dialogue journal as media in teaching writing descriptive text. The subjects of this study were students at Eleventh Grade of vocational high school. This study is qualitative case study which conducted in three meetings. The data were obtained from classroom observations, documentations from the learners and questionnaire. The result of document analysis showed that the students’ writing was poor. It can be seen from the students’ writing performance which was analyzed based on the writing indicator by Brown and Abeywiakram (2010). However, from the students’ dialogue showed that the students could understand the content of their friends’ writing. Also from the students’ dialogue, they could express their feelings toward their friends’ writing. While the result of classroom observation showed that the implementing of DJW brought new atmosphere for the students during learning activity. They could enjoy the learning while writing descriptive text through DJW. Meanwhile the result of questionnaire showed that students gave positive response toward implementing DJW. As the suggestions, the use of Dialogue Journal can be solution for the students who lack of practice writing. Moreover, it can build their writing habit. Thus, the teacher can use Dialogue Journal in learning activity.

Abstract

Learning a foreign language is sometimes difficult since the target language has different elements and rules compared to the native language. When the students apply those elements and rules, it often leads to errors. In this case, when a student is learning a foreign language, the students’ native language will have an impact on the production of the language being learned which is called language interference. This study aims at investigating the types of interference and which type of interference appears more in EFL students’ Indonesian-English translation text. This study involved twenty students of the first grade in a senior high school in Cianjur. It is descriptive qualitative research with the data taken from students’ translation text that were analyzed by using error analysis to point out and describe the interference. The findings show that all participants of this research made errors in their translation text. In this case, four types of error found in the text, those were omission, addition, misformation, and disordering. The differences in the structures between two languages and different proficiency levels of students in target language led the students commited different error types in four error categories. The result of the analysis also shows that there were 413 errors found in the students’ translation text which consisted of 121 omissions (29,29%), 96 additions (22,27%), 156 misformation (38%), and 44 disordering errors (11%). From those frequencies, the most frequent error was misformation. Misformation indicates the use of an incorrect form of a certain linguistic in the target language utterance. Keywords: Language Interference, Indonesian-English Translation, Translation Text, Error Analysis, Classification of Error

Abstract

Abstract: In the digital era, learners gain knowledge from various modes or multimodal. However, it is not in line with the Indonesian teachers’ competencies, particularly in conducting multimodal teaching. For the reasons, this study explored the development of student teachers’ competencies through collaborative multimodal teaching using VR. Moreover, it investigated the difficulties encountered by student teachers in developing the teacher competencies through collaborative multimodal teaching. The teacher competencies consist of the pedagogical, professional, social, and personal competencies (Ministry of National Education, 2007). This study applied qualitative design (multi-case study) involving 45 student teachers studying at three different study programs and 15 model teachers teaching at elementary schools in Cianjur, West Java. Three instruments were employed for the data collection of this study, i.e., observations, questionnaires, and interviews. The results indicate that the collaborative multimodal teaching (using VR) among the model teachers and the student teachers is conducted in five stages, i.e., observing, planning, simulating, practicing, and evaluating. In collaborative multimodal teaching using VR, students teachers involved in a group of teaching using VR as the instructional media naturally, get the transformation of pedagogical knowledge, and practice multimodal teaching directly in the natural teaching-learning processes. Moreover, it fosters the student teacher to develop the teacher competencies optimally, such as practicing teaching methodology and implementing multimodal teaching using VR in real-life contexts (pedagogic competence), expanding digital knowledge (e.g., VR), and utilizing it in teaching-learning processes (professional competence), showing pride in being future teachers (personal competence), interacting and communicating with the teachers and learners naturally (social competence). Thus, they are more ready to be future professional teachers in the millennial era. Nevertheless, they should keep learning and developing the teacher competencies (exceptionally professional and pedagogic competencies) to overcome teaching difficulties, such as learner characteristics, teaching management, material evaluation, curriculum development, and assessment.
