Abstract

Shielding gas is an important thing to protect the weld metal from impurities during the welding process. Ar, CO2, and mixing gas of Ar-CO2 are often used as a shielding gas in the marine industry. Differences in shielding gases and the current of welding could affect the microstructure and hardness of welding. This research analyzed the microstructure and hardness from the FCAW process of Shipbuilding Steel Plate using mixing gas and shielding gas of 100% CO2 with variations of current 180 and 195 A. The filler metal which has been used was A 5.20 E-71T1. The microstructure for the weld metal with 100% CO2 shielding gas was pearlite, widmanstatten ferrite, grain ferrite, and polygonal ferrite; otherwise for mixing shielding gas of 80% Ar + 20% CO2 and 75%Ar + 25% CO2 was found, the structure of pearlite, grain ferrite, and acicular ferrite. The effect of variations in the shielding gas composition and welding current that produced the highest hardness value was achieved with a shielding gas composition of 80% Ar + 20% CO2 and a current of 195 A, resulting in a hardness of 159.2 HV in the weld area.

Abstract

Mangroves have several functions, including maintaining biological balance in coastal ecosystems and tourism. On the other hand, mangroves are also very vulnerable to natural disturbances, anthropogenic, land conversion, and even pollution from various human activities. The success of mangrove planting activities does not only depend on the selection of the type of mangrove to be planted, but also on the selection of a suitable location to support its growth. Mangroves in Romokalisari Village, Surabaya are currently still relatively few. This needs to be planted because the mangroves function as wave breakers and tourist attractions. Mangrove planting activities in Romokalisari Village, Surabaya, were carried out by residents, lecturers and students of the Surabaya State Polytechnic of Shipping. The results of the mangrove planting are expected to have a positive impact on Romokalisari Village, Surabaya and its surroundings.

Abstract

High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE), known for its high resistance to chemicals and impact, as well as its low carbon emission production process. However, the high production of HDPE plastic waste poses a significant challenge in the maritime world. This study focuses on efforts to recycle HDPE waste generated from the shipbuilding process at the Non-Metal Workshop of the Surabaya State Shipping Polytechnic (PPNS). This HDPE waste has great potential to be processed into ship components, including cleats. Cleats are essential devices on ships that function to tie ropes. HDPE waste is molded into new sheets using the Hot Press Compression Molding method, followed by tensile and bending tests. These values will be compared with the mechanical properties of virgin HDPE and simulated using ANSYS software to evaluate the cleat's resistance to tensile loads of 470 N, 600 N, and 730 N. Simulations show that the cleat can withstand loads of 470 N and 600 N, but fails plastically under a load of 730 N, with the stress exceeding its yield strength. The results of this study are expected to contribute to the development of more sustainable shipbuilding technology and encourage the development of other recycled products in the maritime industry.

Abstract

Sheet masks are one of the most widely used beauty products to improve skin health. The increase in sheet mask usage leads to an increase in its waste, while some of the sheet masks contain synthetic fibers that are not biodegradable in the environment. Many researchers have been interested in innovating sheet masks by using natural polymer materials. Starch and cellulose were chosen because they are potentially environmentally friendly and biocompatible products. The solution casting method is used to produce sheet masks. Ginger cellulose and jicama starch were mixed, and the mass ratios of cellulose and starch are 100:0, 100:20, 100:40, 100:60, and 100:80. The addition of starch to cellulose tends to decrease the tensile strength and increase the percent elongation of the sample. The sample with a 100:0 ratio had the highest tensile strength at 34.75 MPa, while the highest percent elongation was achieved by the sample with a 100:40 ratio, measuring 4.80%. The absorption index of the sample to serum decreased with increasing starch composition. Samples with a mass ratio of cellulose to starch of 100:0, 100:20, and 100:40 exhibited better biodegradability than commercial sheet masks. Most of the samples undergo 100% biodegradation after 12 days of the biodegradation test. This research aims to develop a sheet mask made from ginger cellulose and jicama starch, which has flexible properties that allow it to conform to the shape of the face while also effectively absorbing serum or essence. This research can be used as an alternative for choosing sheet mask materials as a way to reduce plastic waste.
