Abstract

Introduction: South Sulawesi has a high prevalence of mental disorders, affecting 8.8% of households. However, limited public awareness about mental health perpetuates stigma toward individuals with mental disorders and their families, significantly increasing the burden on caregivers. This study aims to identify the relationship between stigma and the caregiving burden experienced by families of individuals with mental disorders at Dadi Regional Special Hospital in South Sulawesi Province. Method: This study is a quantitative study with a Cross-Sectional research design. The dependent variable is family burden and the independent is stigma. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling involving 94 respondents using the Stigma Items questionnaire from SCAN and the Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI). Data analysis included univariate analysis to outline frequency distributions and percentages of the variables, alongside bivariate analysis to assess the correlation between stigma and family burden through the Spearman rank correlation test. Results: The results indicated that over half (58.5%) of families reported low stigma, while 51.1% experienced a mild to moderate burden. Statistical analysis using the Spearman correlation test revealed a significant relationship between stigma and family burden (p = 0.000 < 0.05). The correlation coefficient (r = 0.522) reflects a strong positive relationship, suggesting that increased stigma correlates with higher family burden among those caring for individuals with mental disorders. Conclusions: There is a strong correlation between stigma and family burden in caring for people with mental disorders at Dadi Regional Special Hospital in South Sulawesi Province.

Abstract

The surge in COVID-19 cases has a negative impact on the mental health of individuals, such as stress, depression, or fear, leading to a decline in immune response. The effects of this virus also affect the quality of life of heart failure patients. The aim of this research was to identify the barriers faced by heart failure patients in returning to hospital care during the COVID-19 pandemic and maintaining their quality of life. This study employed a quantitative method with a cross-sectional approach. The research samples consisted of 53 heart failure patients selected through accidental sampling with the inclusion criteria of patients readmitted to the hospital. The majority of patients experienced mild barriers, especially in self-care management. Non-compliance with treatments remained a major challenge for patients. The data regarding various barriers faced by heart failure patients in maintaining their quality of life during the COVID-19 pandemic can serve as a foundation for developing intervention models to enhance the quality of life for readmitted patients during the pandemic.

Abstract

In Indonesia, the elderly with chronic illnesses have a relatively high percentage. According to the Basic Health Research (Riskesdas) results in 2018, data indicates an increase in non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and stroke among the elderly. The aging process in the elderly leads to a decline in physiological body functions, resulting in the emergence of non-communicable diseases in old age. The purpose of this community service activity is to enhance the knowledge of the elderly about chronic diseases (hypertension and type II diabetes) through a psycho-educational approach. The educational methods employed include lectures, counseling, and discussions. This activity took place on Friday, September 8, 2023, and was attended by 32 elderly individuals at the Tamalanrea Community Health Center who participated voluntarily. Based on observations, the majority of the elderly demonstrated good knowledge about chronic diseases after the question-and-answer sessions and discussions between the speakers and participants. It is hoped that through this activity, the community, especially the elderly, will gain a better understanding of chronic diseases (hypertension and type II diabetes), leading to behavioral changes and improved capabilities in identifying and preventing chronic illnesses in the future.
