Abstract

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is a chronic intestinal disorder consisting of Crohn’s Disease (CD) and Ulcerative Colitis (UC). The highest prevalence of IBD is found in Asia and the cases often occur in the 15-35 group of age. Conventional therapy options that are commonly used have some side effects that impact IBD patients. Therefore, it is necessary to look for new strategies in order to treat IBD regarding their effectiveness, affordability and achieving minimum side effects. Resveratrol, a natural non-flavonoid polyphenolic compound, is commonly found in grapes and various types of berries. It is known to potentially overcome inflammation in IBD through various mechanisms including acting as anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, immunomodulatory effects, and its ability to influence the gut microbiota. This study is aiming for explaining and reviewing further mainly on resveratrol’s extraction method and its mechanism of actions to improve IBD. The resources for this study are done by searching through PubMed, ProQuest, ScienceDirect, MDPI, and Google Scholar with keywords (Inflammatory Bowel Disease) AND (Resveratrol), (Incidence and Prevalence) of Inflammatory Bowel Disease across Asia, (Threat) AND (Therapy) AND (Inflammatory Bowel Disease), (Bioactive) AND (Therapy) AND (Inflammatory Bowel Disease), (Extraction) AND (Method) AND (Resveratrol), and (Pathophysiology) AND (Inflammatory Bowel Disease). Based on evidence found on resveratrol’s benefits, this compound is apparently promising to alternatively treat IBD, but still needs more research to support its effectiveness.

Abstract

Indonesia is the largest archipelagic country in the world, with extensive coastal and oceanic areas and a high diversity of marine biodiversity. The coastal regions of Indonesia serve as habitats for various types of marine animals that possess both beauty and potential dangers, particularly from marine animal stings. In addition to marine animal stings, decompression sickness also poses a serious emergency in the maritime context. The purpose of this article is to provide new insights into the importance of understanding and recognizing decompression syndrome, as well as the bites and stings caused by marine animals, as early indicators of emergencies in the maritime field. This understanding can enhance early detection, appropriate treatment, and awareness of complications arising from maritime emergencies. The article will focus on marine animals such as the blue-ringed octopus, sea urchins, pufferfish, lionfish, jellyfish, stingrays, and stonefish, which are associated with emergencies in the maritime field. Data sources were gathered through electronic searches on library databases including Google Scholar, ProQuest, MDPI, and PubMed to find articles discussing "emergencies in the maritime field.".

Abstract

The skin has an important role in protecting the human body. However, in infants, the skin has a structure and function that are not fully mature yet, making infants vulnerable to various skin disorders. This article aims to review the structure, function, and development of infant skin, as well as the common diseases that occur in infant skin, including the causes, pathophysiology, and management. A literature review was conducted using scientific articles related to these topics. The review results show that infant skin has a different structure compared to adult skin, and the maturation of its structure and function occurs gradually. Infant skin is protected by the microbiota and the primary immune system. Common skin diseases in infants, such as dermatitis, are caused by an interaction between genetic and environmental factors, and involve the activation of skin cells, the release of mediators, and an immune response. A good understanding of the structure, function, and skin diseases of infants is very important for making the right diagnosis and management, so that the quality of life of infants can be maintained.

Abstract

Abstract

Background: Sensitive skin is an uncomfortable sensation on the skin that arises due to a response to stimuli that normally do not cause discomfort. Women more commonly experience it than men. Recent evidence indicates that cosmetic use is the predominant triggering factor compared to other factors, particularly in women, due to the extensive and varied use of products. Objective: This study examined the relationship between the number of cosmetic products used daily and weekly and the incidence of sensitive skin among young adult females. Methods: This cross-sectional study employed a stratified random sampling method. The study population involved young female adults who agreed to participate after completing the informed consent form. The exclusion criteria were facial inflammation and use of oral or topical medication containing corticosteroids. The cosmetic usage pattern was assessed through a questionnaire. Skin sensitivity assessment was conducted by utilizing the lactic acid stinging test (LAST), where 10% aqueous lactic acid solution was topically applied to the right nasolabial fold region. The mann-whitney test was employed to analyze the relationship between the number of cosmetic products used daily and weekly and the occurrence of sensitive skin. Results: Out of 136 subjects, 23.5% have sensitive skin based on the LAST. The most prevalent products used by the majority of respondents are facial wash, sunscreen, and moisturizer, with a percentage of >70%. No significant relationship is found between the number of products used daily and weekly and sensitive skin (p > 0.05). Conclusion: No significant differences regarding the number of products used among sensitive and non-sensitive skin groups. Therefore, future studies are needed to explore the ingredients in cosmetic products and their volume of usage, as well as to conduct prospective studies assessing the impact of cosmetic usage patterns on the occurrence of sensitive skin.
