Abstract

The emergence of digital technology has fundamentally revolutionized how Muslims access, study, and disseminate the Qur'anic exegesis (tafsir). The digitization of interpretations poses three risks: loss of text authenticity, decreased validity of interpretations due to truncated context, and weakened scientific authority as interpretations are determined more by algorithms than by the competence of scholars. This article critically examines the dynamics of this digital transformation, highlighting the serious risk of semantic distortion that arises from truncated texts, decontextualized summaries, or inconsistencies with the original intent of the mufassir. Utilizing a qualitative study of popular Indonesian digital platforms, the research reveals that although accessibility has increased, certain digital content fails to fully adhere to authoritative texts and often neglects established methodological principles of interpretation. These findings emphasize the necessity of academic responsibility in harmonizing technological advancement with scholarly integrity, concluding that the digital transformation in tafsir studies can only yield positive contributions if strictly managed through rigorous academic control and ethical scholarship, necessitating wider digital tafsir literacy among users.

Abstract

This article examines the reconstruction of Sufi hadith epistemology in Manāhij al-Imdād by Syekh Ihsan Jampes and its relevance to the modern identity crisis. The contemporary identity crisis is characterized by fragmentation of the self, disorientation of meaning, and the dominance of instrumental rationality that marginalizes the spiritual dimension of human existence. This study aims to identify the epistemological structure developed by Syekh Ihsan in his Sufi interpretation of hadith and to analyze its contribution in responding to contemporary identity problems. This research employs a qualitative library-based approach with an epistemological and conceptual analysis of Manāhij al-Imdād. The findings reveal that Syekh Ihsan’s Sufi hadith epistemology is integrative in nature, combining bayānī (textual), Burhānī (rational), and ‘irfānī (experiential-spiritual) modes of knowing. Hadith is positioned not merely as a normative source of doctrine but also as a transformative medium for cultivating spiritual consciousness through processes of tazkiyat al-nafs (self-purification), muraqabah (spiritual awareness), and the internalization of the value of ihsan. This epistemological model offers a framework for reconstructing identity that integrates cognitive, ethical, and spiritual dimensions. Accordingly, Syekh Ihsan’s thought contributes theoretically to the development of Sufi hadith studies and presents a relevant conceptual alternative for addressing the modern identity crisis.

Abstract

The circadian rhythm is a natural biological cycle of the human body that operates over approximately 24 hours and is strongly influenced by light. In the context of modern life, lifestyle disruptions such as staying up late and sleep–wake inversion increasingly distance humans from the natural night–day rhythm, thereby affecting physical and mental health. Departing from this problem, this study examines the phenomenon of night and day in the Qur’an through the perspective of the scientific exegesis (tafsir ilmi of Tantawi Jawhari, a Qur’anic exegete known for his strong emphasis on the relationship between ayat kawniyyah and scientific knowledge. This study aims to describe Tantawi Jawhari’s interpretation in Al-Jawahir fi Tafsir Al-Qur’an Al-Karim of Qur’anic verses concerning the creation of night and day and to analyze their relevance to the concept of circadian rhythm within chronobiological studies. The research employs a qualitative library research method using a thematic (mawdui) approach to Qur’anic interpretation. Primary data consist of Qur’anic verses related to night and day, such as Q.S. al-Anam [6]: 60, Q.S. al-Furqan [25]: 47, Q.S. al-Qasas [28]: 73, and Q.S. al-Rum [30]: 23, along with their interpretations in Al-Jawahir. Data analysis is conducted through a descriptive–analytical method by presenting Jawhari’s interpretations and subsequently examining their conceptual relevance to the human circadian rhythm. The findings indicate that, in Tantawi Jawhari’s perspective, the creation of night and day is understood as a manifestation of divine mercy that sustains the order of human life. Night is positioned as a time for rest that enables tranquility and bodily recovery, while daytime is designated for activity supported by sunlight. This interpretation demonstrates a conceptual correspondence with the principles of the circadian rhythm, in which disruption of appropriate rest–activity patterns may lead to physical and psychological disorders. Accordingly, this study affirms that the scientific exegesis of Tantawi Jawhari provides a Qur’anic framework relevant for reflecting on the importance of maintaining the circadian rhythm as part of sunnatullah in human life.

Abstract

This article examines the concept of materialism from the perspective of ‘ilm al-kalām al-jadīd, focusing on the thought of Jamaluddin al-Afghani. It critically analyzes al-Afghani’s response to the rise of materialism in the 19th century within philosophical and theological debates in the Islamic world. The main objective of this study is to explain how al-Afghani formulated his critique of materialism and how his ideas contributed to modern Islamic theology. Using qualitative methods and content analysis, the study explores al-Afghani’s works especially al-Radd ‘alā al-Dahriyyīn alongside relevant secondary sources. The findings show that al-Afghani regarded materialism as a serious threat to moral and spiritual life because it rejects metaphysical elements such as God, the soul, and the afterlife. He argued that materialism weakens the ethical role of religion and leads to spiritual decline in Muslim society. Within modern kalām, al-Afghani sought to integrate Islamic theology with contemporary intellectual challenges without abandoning core principles. His critique significantly influenced modern Islamic thought by encouraging theological commitment while engaging with modernity
