Abstract

The number of rhetorical studies of research articles (RAs) using a genre approach has increased greatly. However, studies on this area in Indonesian research articles (RAs) published in accredited journals are still limited. None has investigated the rhetorical structures of Indonesian History and Law research article results and discussions (RARDs) published in Indonesian accredited journals. Thus, the present study aims to analyse them rhetorically using English rhetorical models, one is from Tessuto (2015) and the other one is from Hopkins and Dudley-Evans (1988). The reason for employing these models is to determine whether the models could represent the rhetorical structure of the present data sets. These models were alternately tested against both data sets. The results showed that the rhetorical structures of both Indonesian History and Law RARDs are different from those presented in the English-tested models, and the analysis results showed that the present data have their models. These differences indicate problems for Indonesian authors in these two selected disciplines when publishing RAs in reputable English journals. Thus, these findings may contribute to English for Academic Purposes (EAP) for teaching instruction for publishing RAs in reputable English journals for authors in the two disciplines.

Abstract

Rhetorical studies within research articles have received a growing concern among linguists worldwide. However, studies on this significant area to create incremental innovation are rarely found. Understanding this need has attracted the authors to conduct the present study by investigating rhetorical strategies authors use to create incremental innovation in their research articles and analyzing linguistic features used to create innovation for their current research. In an attempt to address these purposes, the present study analyzed 37 research article introductions (RAIs) from the disciplines of Applied Linguistics published in four reputable international journals (Q1) with the Scimago Journal Ranks (SJR) higher than 0,61. This study employed a newly designed framework and linguistic feature approaches from previous studies for the analysis. The results showed three rhetorical strategies to create incremental innovation in research articles. However, of these three, most authors tend to employ Strategy 2, Presenting the existing knowledge – and then – improving it in the present study, more than the other two strategies. Then, to realize incremental innovation, they employed six linguistic features, but of these six, two features (connective adverbs and phrases denoting examining a particular issue) appeared to be the most dominant in the present data.

Abstract

This study intends to analyze communicative strategies to respond to IELTS essay writing questions. It used a genre-based approach for the analysis, using 20 IELTS essay writing samples and receiving band seven. The results revealed that IELTS test takers in this study employed two communicative strategies to respond to questions: presenting introductory responses and responding to questions either explicitly or implicitly. However, while they used simple sentences more than the other sentence types in presenting introductory responses, they used more complex sentences to respond to the questions. Then, they tend to write these two communicative strategies in simple present tense forms. The implications of these findings are discussed in the discussion section.

Abstract

This study analyze the rhetorical structures employed in beauty brand sales videos on Instagram aiming to understand how they engage viewers and influence purchasing behaviour. Using a genre-based analytical approach, especially the model suggested by (Warsidi, Adnan, et al., 2024), the study identifies three main rhetorical moves across 15 selected sales videos. These videos were chosen based on data sets criteria. The findings reveal that establishing customer interest is the most dominant move in all samples, with strategies such as presenting product benefits and using persuasive interaction language appearing most frequently. Conversely, strategies like greeting the audience or providing taglines appeared less often and were considered optional. The study explores language frames used to increase engagement on social media platforms, including emotionally resonant queries, descriptive product language, personal suggestions, and urgent calls to action. By combining qualitative and quantitative methods, this study provides valuable insights into how rhetorical strategies influence consumer behavior on social media platforms. The research emphasizes the importance of creating content and the strategic role of language and appearance in selling products effectively. This research contributes to understanding digital marketing and offers implications for rhetorical studies, social media marketing, and English for Business Purposes (EBP).

Abstract

This study employs Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) to explore the argumentation strategies or Topoi analyses used to justify the importance of the Emancipated Learning Policy (Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka/MBKM) in response to the globalization of education. The discourse of globalization of education around the world, including in Indonesia, has been a topic of growing concern that attracts researchers and academics. In the context of Indonesia, this country deserves a close look since globalization has shaped and reshaped the education policy and practices, as well as enforced the shift of higher education curriculum. Besides unfolding the argumentation strategies utilized by the government to legitimize the policy, the study sheds new light on an alternative analysis to comprehend the marketization of higher education in Indonesia. The topoi analysis was used to identify how globalization shapes the policy and how the national authority discursively justifies the claim of its importance. By analyzing topos of urgency utilized in policy texts and the ministers speech, the findings reveal that the presence of globalization invasion in the policy is evident, as identified in the following arguments, namely link and match, quick change, competitiveness, and collaboration. These findings convincingly show that the education policy and its implementation should be advanced to match the global values of globalization, which is expected to bring a positive impact to national education, especially in the higher education context.

Abstract

Citation is very significant in academic writing because it may create engagements with earlier findings and improve academic reputations. Studies on this area within academic writings have been widely conducted with varied purposes, but citation functions have received a small portion of scholarly attention. Besides, studies on this area in the Indonesian context are hardly found in the literature. Understanding this need has encouraged me to analyze citation functions in Indonesian History and Law research articles (RAs) because these two disciplines have been rarely investigated in genre studies, particularly in the Indonesian context. To reach this purpose, this study analyzed 30 Indonesian RAs from the History and Law disciplines to discover whether the functions are either to provide background information, provide evidence, or present beliefs, ideas, and issues circulated. The results revealed that citations found in the present study function as background information, evidence, and to present beliefs, ideas, issues circulated. However, these functions appear differently in each section. While these findings theoretically may contribute to the literature regarding citation functions in each section, they practically may provide awareness of article authors regarding the functions of citations in writing RAs.

Abstract

The number of generic microstructure studies within English research articles (RAs) has recently increased worldwide. However, studies on this area in the Indonesian context are still limited, specifically in the method section. To address this need, in this paper, the researcher focuses on analyzing the microstructure of 30 Indonesian History and Law Research Article Methods (IHLRAMs) because these two disciplines have never been investigated earlier in the Indonesian context. For the analysis, an English model found by Zhang and Wannaruk (2016) was employed for the initial analytical framework in both corpora. However, both data sets only partially employ this English model; thus, further analysis employed a top-down approach. The results showed that the corpora have their own microstructure models, called Indonesian history research article methods (IHRAMs) and Indonesian law research article methods (ILRAMs) models. These two findings models imply that the microstructure of the Indonesian history and law RAMs is different from an English model. Thus, these differences become a challenge for Indonesian authors and possibly also those whose English is their foreign language (EFL) when they want to publish articles in English journals. On the other hand, comprehending these differences may improve their awareness, as well as their opportunities for publishing RAs in English journals.

Abstract

Genre of research article introductions (RAIs) have received increasing numbers of scholarly research worldwide, including in the Indonesian context, and establishing a niche has been previously addressed in the literature. However, studies to justify current research in Indonesian contexts are still limited, particularly those published in accredited Sinta journals, while understanding how to establish a niche is pivotal to provide understanding and awareness to students and novice authors. This study aims to address this need by analyzing counter-claiming and indicating a gap to establish a niche in 100 English RAIs written by Indonesian authors in the discipline of language education published in Sinta 2-accredited journals, and how authors linguistically realize these two communicative steps. It used genre-based analysis, more specifically, the Move 2 Establishing a niche of create research space (CARS) model as an analytical framework. The results revealed that an evolving genre has occurred in this study. Indonesian authors employed counter-claiming and indicated a gap for establishing a niche. However, while counter-claiming is optional, indicating a gap is conventional in this study. To realize these two steps, the authors employed linguistic strategies to justify their current research areas. These results imply that genre in English RAIs in the present study may become future examples and as a starting point for evolving genre. The reason behind these findings are discussed further in the discussion section.

Abstract

This research examined the rhetorical structure of the climax plot in the novel Ayat-Ayat Cinta by Habiburrahman El Shirazy (2004). This study employed a qualitative design, utilizing Swales' (1990) move analysis method to identify moves and strategies in the climax chapters, and supported the analysis with narrative plot mapping. The results showed that the climax plot was dominated by rhetorical moves that highlighted narrative shifts through tension, provided character struggles, highlighted character emotions, and built a dramatic atmosphere that served to strengthen the ideological and persuasive dimensions of the narrative. In addition, a length analysis of the climax revealed that measuring it through the number of chapters, pages, paragraphs, and dialogues effectively reflected the dramatic effect and maximized the communicative impact on readers. These findings indicate that rhetorical structure influences the persuasive power of the climax in conveying moral, cultural, and religious values. This study provides insight into how narrative design contributes to the creation of meaning in Indonesian popular literature.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze simple sentence patterns and the structure of phrases in reading texts in the Talk Active textbook for 10th grade students at SMAN 13 Maros. This study focuses on identifying syntactic sentence patterns and syntactic structures of phrases in the sentences. A total of 140 simple sentences from 14 chapters were analyzed using the classification of simple sentence patterns according to Quirk et al., (1985), phrase structure rules theory according to Bornstein (1984), and syntactic tree diagram representation according to Aarts (2001). The results showed that the most dominant sentence patterns were SVC and SVO, followed by SVOA and SVA, while complex patterns such as SVOO and SVOC rarely appeared, and the simplest pattern SV did not appear at all. Noun phrases (NPs) were dominated by Pronoun and Determiner + Noun, while verb phrases were dominated by linking verbs (Vl) with complements and transitive verbs (Vt) with objects and additional adverbials, supporting the dominance of SVC, SVO, and SVOA patterns. These findings indicate that the textbook tend to feature more descriptive sentences where sentence patterns are used to explain or identify subjects and express actions or events.
