Abstract

Studies on sentences have been conducted in many linguists' academic works, but only a few of them investigate this area in research articles. Besides, sentence studies in Indonesian research articles have received a very small portion of academic attention. For this reason, the present study intends to investigate words and sentences, as well as voice forms in Indonesian research articles to provide a more comprehensive understanding to students and novice authors. The data in the present study are 30 Indonesian research articles from the disciplines of History and Law. The analysis used a top-down approach, combining a computer analysis system and manual analysis. An earlier analytical approach was employed and the results indicate that both data sets share similarities and differences. Their similarities and differences are presented in both the result section and the discussion section.

Abstract

Abstract

Rhetorical studies in various texts have been widely conducted. However, compared to studies in written text, spoken text still received very little scholarly attention. For example, studies on rhetorical structure within the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) are hardly found in the literature. Responding to this fundamental need, this study intends to investigate what rhetorical model IELTS test takers employ to make their English-speaking receive excellent scores. This study analyzes ten IELTS speaking tests that receive band seven or above to realize this intention. These ten videos of IELTS speaking tests were taken from YouTube using standard criteria. Their recordings were transcribed to find their rhetorical model, and a top-down analytical approach was employed to find functional moves and strategies to achieve speakers' intentions. The results showed two communicative moves and six strategies as a rhetorical model used by the IELTS test takers who received band seven or above in the present study. This finding implies that understanding the rhetorical model of IELTS speaking may improve awareness of responding to interviewers' requests.

Abstract

In this internet era, the issue of market globalization has led and encouraged both individual and cooperative businesses to improve their creativity for selling products widely. However, studies that underpin this essential issue in linguistic concerns are still limited. Studies on the rhetorical structure of English sales copies, for example, have been rarely conducted, while investigating this fundamental issue is urgently conducted to improve product sales globally. In responding to this urgent need, I investigated the rhetorical model of English sales copies. Data in this study are 30 English sales copies posted on Instagram. These data were collected by three students taking a course in creative writing. For the analysis, I employed genre-based analysis using a top-down approach. The analysis discovered a rhetorical model that fitted the rhetorical structures of the present data set. The model contained three important functional moves, namely establishing a positive impression, establishing customers’ interest, and facilitating the purchasing process. To realize these functional moves, copywriters employed some possible strategies. Compared to earlier literature, the present finding has differences from those found in literature, on the one hand, but similarities, on the other hand. For example, establishing customers’ interest, and facilitating the purchasing process are obligatory, while establishing a positive impression is conventional in the present study.

Abstract

This study aims: 1) to reveal types of code mixing that appeared in the Bulan Terbelah di Langit Amerika 2 movie and 2) to find out factors that cause code mixing in this movie. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method. In collecting data, this research applied note-taking as an instrument. To obtain data, the dialogues of the characters were analyzed thoroughly. Researchers implemented the theory of code-mixing by Muysken (2000) to find the types and the view of code-mixing factors from Hoffman (1991) for the analysis. The research results revealed three types of code mixing contained in this movie. They are insertion type (7 data or 29.17%), alternation type (12 data or 50%), and congruent lexicalization type (5 data or 20.83%). In addition, factors of code-mixing are also found in this movie. They are the lexical needs factor (9 data or 37.5%), emphasize something factor (3 data or 12.5%), talking about a particular topic factor (5 data or 20.83%), repetition used for clarification factor (2 data or 16.64%), soften or strengthen request or command factor (2 data or 8.33%, and expressing group identity factor (1 data or 4.16%). The most common form of code-mixing in this film is alternation when one language is used to fill in for another's lexical gaps throughout a conversation. They spoke in turn, and researchers found that a single sentence may be expressed in two languages with vastly different grammatical structures.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the strategy of impoliteness and the factors that influence the use of impolite expressions by students in social interactions at Makassar Islamic University. This research uses descriptive qualitative method with simple random sampling, and instruments in the form of audio recordings and interviews. Data analysis techniques include data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that there were 22 data included in the incivility strategies, which included five strategies according to Culpeper: veiled incivility, positive incivility, negative incivility, sarcasm or feigned incivility, and withholding politeness. The most frequently used strategy is sarcasm or feigned incivility. In addition, there are five factors that cause incivility, namely social status, age difference, gender difference, social distance or familiarity, and situation. Incivility allows the expression of socially recognized views and can be an important factor in the development of peer-to-peer communication, so this concept of human values and the role of incivility requires further attention in research.

Abstract

Given that researchers aim to publish in prestigious journals, understanding the rhetorical organization of such publications is crucial. While this topic has been extensively studied, existing research has yet to explore how authors in reputable journals engage with prior literature. To fill this gap, the present study intends to analyze how research article authors respond to other earlier literature in their research article introductions (RAIs) published in reputable international applied linguistics journals. This study aims to achieve two objectives: to find out to what extent responding to other earlier literature is important in RAIs, and to discover what types of response authors employ in their RAIs. To achieve these goals, this study employed combined descriptive qualitative and quantitative approaches for analyzing 40 RAIs published in Q1 journals as data sets in the present study. Then, a new analytical framework was designed to respond to the above objectives. The results indicated that responding to other earlier literature is obligatory in RAIs published in reputable international applied linguistics journals. In responding to other earlier literature, authors employed three types of response: either extending other earlier studies, modifying other earlier studies, or establishing a new method, idea, or knowledge. This study offers theoretical contributions by expanding the understanding of how research article authors engage with prior literature within their RAIs. Its practical implications include guiding researchers on effectively utilizing prior literature to establish their research agenda when publishing in reputable journals.

Abstract

Genre studies in English for specific purposes (ESP) have long been widely investigated, including in academic and professional texts. In professional texts, these studies have been conducted in business letters, formal letters, newsletters in China and Australia, advertising promotional media in Indonesia, and application letters. However, application letters are still the least investigated in the Indonesian context. Furthermore, contrastive genre analysis of English and Indonesian application letters has never been investigated to date. Based on finding and comprehending this gap in the literature, the researcher is encouraged and interested in conducting the present study. The researcher involved and trained 12 English foreign language (EFL) students to analyze rhetorical moves of 63 English and 63 Indonesian application letters. However, among the 63 English application letters, 25 were written by non-native English speakers. Thus, the researcher only focused on analyzing 38 English and 63 Indonesian application letters. Then, to ensure the validity of the analysis results, the researcher reanalyzed the rhetorical moves by re-reading application letters three times using a top-down approach and identifying their linguistic signals. The results showed two rhetorical models of English and Indonesian application letters. These two models imply that they have rhetorical differences in communicating their purposes.

Abstract

The number of rhetorical studies of research articles (RAs) using a genre approach has increased greatly. However, studies on this area in Indonesian research articles (RAs) published in accredited journals are still limited. None has investigated the rhetorical structures of Indonesian History and Law research article results and discussions (RARDs) published in Indonesian accredited journals. Thus, the present study aims to analyse them rhetorically using English rhetorical models, one is from Tessuto (2015) and the other one is from Hopkins and Dudley-Evans (1988). The reason for employing these models is to determine whether the models could represent the rhetorical structure of the present data sets. These models were alternately tested against both data sets. The results showed that the rhetorical structures of both Indonesian History and Law RARDs are different from those presented in the English-tested models, and the analysis results showed that the present data have their models. These differences indicate problems for Indonesian authors in these two selected disciplines when publishing RAs in reputable English journals. Thus, these findings may contribute to English for Academic Purposes (EAP) for teaching instruction for publishing RAs in reputable English journals for authors in the two disciplines.
